“Lots of character”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2014

The lobby and dining room are filled with Ethiopian antiques and art. This hotel had more character than any other place we stayed during a two week visit in Ethiopia. The view is beautiful and the staff are extremely helpful. The dinner and breakfast were both excellent. I preferred the dinner here to the one I had at Ben Abeba, which is said to be the best restaurant in town.

The view is panorama of the valley below. You can see for many miles. The staff were helpful, honest, and friendly. The price was $55/night, certainly not cheap for Lalibela but a good value considering the quality of the place.

We stayed for two non-consecutive nights, and had two rooms both nights (so we saw 4 rooms). Quality and décor were similar in all. We did not sit on the balcony as the sun was blazing but having it there for drying some clothes, and being able to open the sliding glass door was excellent. The rooms are good size and the beds are comfortable. The only downside was the very low flow shower.

Breakfast was good, especially the "special omelet". WiFi worked fine. Easy walking distance to main part of Lalibela (and even closer to restaurant Ben Abeba--definitely worth a visit).

Room Tip: We had 7, 10, 11, 12. All were upper floor with same layout, furnishings and view. #7 is larger th...

This hotel is absolutely amazing. It has a perfect view, very clean, comfortable rooms. I actually got sick (not from their food) and the hotel manager came with me to the hospital and stayed there until he was sure I was ok to get back to the hotel. He also instructed hotel staff to look after me when I was recovering. I would definitely stay here again.

I stayed here during the last week in March. The room was clean and well appointed, the breakfast was great and the view was amazing. The owner and staff were friendly and helpful, I would recommend staying here if you visit Lalibela.

The room is very functional - just a bed or two, clean white walls, solid floor, a cylinder of hot water, some cupboards that may or may not open, net curtain over the floor-to-ceiling full-width window, and a spare blanket.

The verandah, once you get the glass doors open, is private and big enough for two comfy chairs and a rickety table. Massive eagles soar past, chased by aggressive crows and the views at sunset are really rather amazing, since you're on top of a massive cliff with a view stretching at least 75km to the West. The cold beer arrives swiftly from the staff. Even at this altitude in March there were a few mosquitoes so I rigged up a net, but the room doesn't have them so you'd be advised to keep the verandah door shut and the bathroom window closed, or bring one with you.

The water pressure is low, and the soap is that fluorescent pink bar - so the shower is a bit trying.

Breakfast simple - toast, omelettes etc. Excellent fresh papaya juice.

Checkout is slow ... and the credit card reader "doesn't work very often" so you'll probably end up paying cash.

This is far from being the most expensive hotel in Lalibela but the local guides were united in considering it the best. I had room 7 and I agree with other reviewers that it is the best of the best. The room is about 40 square metres, not including a large balcony.
Breakfast was OK by Ethiopian standards, I would recommend eating out for the other meals. I liked the Seven Olives Hotel best of those I tried. I only ate Ethiopian food outside breakfasts so I have no opinion on foreign cuisine.
I'm getting on in years and found walking around the churches fairly exhausting. I hadn't realised that Lalibela is at over 8000 feet.
I had heard the churches compared to Petra and to Ellora Caves in India. I'd rate this a little lower in the must see list than either. Ellora Caves is a similar site but the temples there are much more elaborate than the churches here. Still it amply deserves its world heritage rating.

Room Tip: Room #7 is the best. All rooms have the same wonderful view.
