Kairaba Beach Hotel

This was our 5th visit to The Gambia but it was the 1st time we'd been able to get in at the Kairaba. The gardens and pool area are beautiful and the whole place has a slightly colonial feel to it. The rooms and public areas are a bit tired but this doesn't detract from the pleasurable experience of a stay here. The food is excellent and the service second to none. We stayed on a B&B basis and the breakfasts are of a high quality and plentiful, fruit yogurts cereals porridge salads cooked meats, full english breakfast, every conceivable way to cook an egg at the egg station, including pancakes with dried fruits maple syrup etc and the only time I've had boiled eggs that wern't like bullets, plus a dozen different types of bread. We ate at the beach bar most days and the small but varied menu was equally good. Our deluxe room was in block 1 with a garden and sea view. The bathroom had a good hot shower and towels were changed up to twice a day! it was nice and quiet. The massages in the Well Being Centre are excellent and cheap compared to UK prices. Don't be scared to ask for a discount, I got 10% off just by asking. We will return to this hotel and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet restfull
holiday with good food in and around the hotel.

This was our 2nd visit here and it certainly won't be the last. The guy's at the pool were great and I met my pal Wally again and a special hi to Moyis who we will stay in touch with. There was a mix up with our room and we were upgraded to a balcony suite with sea view and got 2 complimentary meals with drinks and chocolates, what a great service. All the staff are so friendly from the Management, security guards, gardeners, waiters and a special hi to Alfie our housekeeper, he would do anything for you. The only staff who need some trining in customer service are the reception staff and I encountered a very rude one when I told him the room we were given was not the one we paid for, though it all worked out after that with the help of Amir and Karim. Breakfast was great and we will be back very soon.

We had great expectations of this hotel judging by the reviews and were certainly not disappointed. The hotel is certainly not luxurious and the decor a little dated, but it all works! The main thing for us was that there was no piped music playing round the pool area during the day and it was wonderful just listening to the sea and the birds. The grounds are beautiful and such a treat to have so much wild life, wonderful exotic birds, sweet, friendly monkeys and the stunning monitor lizards - all on our doorstep! We stayed in a de luxe ground floor room which had a large veranda with two chairs and a table. The rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable. The only downside was that we found the bath was placed in an awkward position making it difficult to turn the taps on unless you had very long arms. We ate three times in the evenings by the pool where the themed buffet was excellent and there is a different band playing each night. The breakfast was wonderful with every taste catered for, although the service was a bit chaotic at times. We loved it all and will be back.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the hotel next door as they sometimes have loud music playing until after 2a...

We've just come back from banjul and stayed at the kairaba, positive things are breakfast is good, grounds are nice and staff are friendly (apart from reception staff) but the rooms need alot of tlc, we asked for a double room, quiet with a nice view and were put in a twin room opposite the car park and where the entertainment played. Hot water was sparse and our toilet kept flushing, we complained many times but the reception staff just didn't seem interested, they offered us another room which we had to pay 35 euros extra per night for, which we refused.
After speaking with lots of people, kairaba is hugely overpriced, there are much nicer hotels to stay in. I will be writing a letter of compliant to Thomas Cook, on our last day we checked out and were hanging around reception, the transfer came and took our luggage and left us?!?! The reception staff tried to blame us and said we would have to make our own way to the airport?!

Gambia is lovely though, I would recommend Kotu beach and Paradise beach, Crocodile park is worth going, yellow taxis are alot cheaper than tourist ones and very safe. We took a trip to St James Island which was amazing, Albert market is huge best to go with a guide. Clay Oven is a great Indian restaurant and Jewel of India is good as well, African Queen do really good fish dishes.

This is the third time we have stayed here and it doesnt change. Lovely staff, so willing to help you, beautiful gardens, we were welcomed by the monkeys again on our patio, the peacocks wander around the gardens and hubby caught sight of a three foot iguana. The hotel has two or three restaurants and they all serve excellent food. Just outside the hotel is a round hut which houses the local Tourist Guides and we have to plug their services. They will take you anywhere you want at a much cheaper rate than they tourist companies. They know much more about the places and give a personal service. We have been going out with them for the last 11 years and cant praise them enough. They are just trying to earn a living which is a lot more than can be said for some of the locals. PLEASE USE THEM.

Room Tip: Rooms in horseshoe have lovely view of gardens.

Great hotel and good value for money (booked through Hotels 4U - owned by Thomas Cook, and flights direct with TC). It's all been said before but combination of top hotel, great location, good food locally, fantastic weather, no time zone change and bearable flight all add up to make this a great winter break - will be visiting again next year!!

Room Tip: Room 225 (Superior deluxe) (block 2, top floor, south side) was excellent ( we would ask for it again...

As expected from the earlier reviews this hotel would rate as a three star in Europe. However from speaking to tourists in other nearby hotels it would appear to be similar/better than others available for the same price. The grounds are beautiful, full of wild life and very well maintained and the staff are excellent. We were in a standard room with garden view and it was adequate although worn and at one point the bathroom wall switch fell out of its fitting exposing the wires next to the sink, it was fixed immediately. Unless you are visiting for total relaxation, you will; need to do some of the trips out into the 'Real Gambia'. We went with Arch Tours, booked when we got there as we wanted our money to go locally and not to Thomas Cook. We also ate out as often as possible for the same reason. There is nothing to do in the evening other than walk up 'the Strip' which was an eye opener for me .I wasn t exactly expecting the Las Vegas Strip but this a literally a rough road sided by restaurants, bars etc. in various states of disrepair. However, as I kept reminding myself...this is Gambia, and it's hot in February and only 5 and a half hours from the UK with no time difference. I wouldn t recommend for families as there is precious little to do for children. Breakfast excellent with lots of choice hot and cold.

Room Tip: pay a bit more and upgrade to a suite
