We have just had three lovely sunny, hot weeks in this hotel. Beautiful gardens, wonderful variety of birds, friendly cats and amusing, harmless monkeys. Yes, the private beach is eroding, but it really isn't a problem, as there is plenty of beach with loungers to sunbathe on, and down a few steps to the 'lower' part of the beach to swim or walk for miles.

Our slight niggles were, we felt management needed to be more in evidence, and some of the music round the pool in the evenings was very monotonous and uninteresting, and the meals and drinks expensive. The hotel only hosted one banquet while we were there, which was fine, but why does the band have to play until 4am, especially when there are guests staying in the hotel. We do understand that the hotel must be suffering from lack of guests last year.

The Gambian people are lovely and the hotel staff, as always, were very helpful, but some of them who we hardly came into contact with were very obviously after tips. We always tip well, but you can't tip everyone!

Our favourite restaurants were Scala and Paradiso, and we used a lovely, reliable and helpful taxi driver called Kawsu 9935119 or 7581317. We will definately be back!

This was our second visit to The Kairaba, again it did not disappoint. House 1 in a first floor room was delightful. The Atlantic and the view from our balcony was perfection, it was quiet with just the noise of the sea, the birds to ensure total relaxation. The gardens were still beautiful and a walk round with Aladdin was so informative. Breakfast was varied and well presented, tea and coffee served by lovely Rachael and all the other staff, eggs cooked freshly to your own taste. We used room service and had two meals in our room, the food was excellent and served promptly, also very good value. Happy hour at the pool was fun listening to local bands. The Internet was superb and could be received anywhere in the room and grounds, even on the beach. The beach erosion was a pity but the beach was easily accessed at low tide at high tide it is still possible with care. We went on two trips to Makasutu and lazy days on the river we well organised with excellent lunches provided. We went onto another residence for three days and the transport provided was on time and efficient. We shall return.

Room Tip: Rooms in house one have really close views of the sea.

Dear Valued guest,

We thank you for giving us the overall satisfactory tick for good service and delivery. We are happy to note that you got and early bird watching tour of the gardens with Alladin. Amazing the rich plethora of birds that can be spotted just from our gardens.

Your review was truly a breath of fresh air and management and staff say a big ''Thank you''!

See you again soonest!

This hotel decided to give permission for a fundraising concert tonight. This started at 2200hrs, and will not finish until approximately 0400hrs.The noise levels are unacceptable, especially for us paying guests,in a so called five star hotel. We have to get up at 0630hrs to go on a day trip.No consideration for the hotel guests has been given, and is thoroughly unacceptable.A formal complaint has been made at the reception.

Dear Valued guest,

I apologize once again for the noise pollution that occurred as a result of the Gala Dinner that went on for longer than the time stated on our letter sent in-room informing our guests about the event. We are sincerely for the inconvenience caused and are committed to finding a lasting solution to this persistent issue.

We look forward to welcoming you back soonest.

Best regards,

This was our first visit Gambia. The hotel ,though a bit tired ,was everything we could ask for.The grounds were beautiful and well cared for.Reception were efficient and helpful. Most importantly the staff were cheerful ,friendly and invariably helpful. We very much enjoyed watching the abundant birdlife and the birdwatching guide.Aladdin, was not only extremely knowledgeable but also good company.Only drawbacks were the erosion on the beach and the poor restaurants and bar on site which did not matter given the number of very good bars and restaurants on the adjacent strip, where there were also a number of useful ATM' s.We would not hesitate to return!

Room Tip: deluxe rooms best choice.Try to get ground floor.

In the local language, "Kairaba" means "peace, love and unity" and I think it sums this hotel up pretty well.

The grounds are immaculate and perfect for a peaceful snooze in the gardens on a hammock or basking in the sunshine on the private beach on lovely comfy sunbeds (thanks to the double mattresses supplied by Dodo and Baf!) with your every need tended to by the lovely waiting staff (all lovely but Baks and Sambou stand out). Yes, the outlook could be better with the erosion prevention measures, but blame the Atlantic Ocean for that, not the hotel.

Every day post-beach there is a happy hour around the pool (2 for 1 rather than half price as in previous years which can be annoying as the second drink gets warm!) with excellent local bands playing both local and English songs and definitely worth a look. They'll even let you join in if you are up for it!

Great breakfast buffet, with a chefs cooking all types of eggs and omelettes to order. Lunch time snacks are also excellent quality and good value with the portion size (we found one baguette between two to be ample). We didn't eat at the hotel during the evening as we preferred exploring the numerous bars and restaurants on the strip.

We found the rooms to be comparable with other hotels we have stayed in and for the amount of time you spend there, given all the things to see and do on the "smiling coast", really all you need is a comfy bed and air con, and we had both.

Kairaba - Thanks for a lovely holiday and we'll definitely be back soon!
