“almost there”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2013

Went back in February this year and they are nearly there. The service is good the staff are fantastic but the rooms let them down. They are still very very basic and I am not exaggerating, in the bathroom for example when having a shower there is nothing to put your soap / shower gel / shampoo on we had to pull the waste bin in - such a shame for something that would cost so little. The sink was coming away from the wall ( in more than one room ) the towels were badly stained. In the main area all there is for your clothes is one wardrobe with a few shelves. The walls badly need painting preferably with a brighter colour than dark red !!!!. As I say on a the hotel is so much better than when we were there in November - mainly due to the staff being so brilliant. We have booked again for this November so lets hope in the summer they can spruce the rooms up a bit. Review after that !!!!!!!!!!!

We had never visited any part of West Africa before so took the safe option of a complex. We got an over-priced hotel from the airport and were greeted by friendly receptionist staff. We knew that tipping a couple of pounds here and there made your life a bit easier and we found this to be very true.
Our room was near the back of the complex and was very clean. I have read some of the reviews and I'm embarrassed by people who have complained about lack of TV remotes (eh? You travel to Africa and you're watching tv??), lack of free soaps and issues with the air conditioning. I understand you're on holiday but you're in an incredibly poor country. I suggest you go and visit the local market and see people buying tiny sachets of sauce and fly covered pieces of fish and meat because they cannot afford more and then wonder if you should be complaining that your tv doesn't have a remote control.
The hotel staff are incredibly friendly, the breakfast was sparse but more than enough to start the day - have the local fritters or the maize porridge!
The complex is beautiful, lush and green, filled with wildlife (don't leave your door open and be surprised to see monkeys on your bed eating your fruit!) The beach is small but you are on a ridge which means the local hawkers are not allowed to enter. There is a lady at one end who will do you a delicious fruit salad for a couple of pounds. Just remember you might think 3 or 4 pounds is expensive for a fruit salad but, again, visit the market and you realise 3 or 4 pounds can give a family quite a good meal.
Oh and watch out for the birds at breakfast they love a bit of bacon!!

My partner and I stayed in this hotel for 11 nights in January. The grounds are beautiful with lots of wildlife.. monkeys, birds and lizards. Our room was kept clean and there was lots of wardrobe space, despite the room not being that big. Although we had asked for a double we were given two singles pushed together however this was not a problem as we were in Africa and we spent minimal time in the room.
The pool area was kept clean, we always managed to get a sunbed. The pool boys were very helpful and despite people putting towels out early they always found us somewhere in the sun!
There was a big selection for breakfast, we ate in the pizza restaurant on our first night but preffered to eat out on the strip. We especially enjoyed Green Mamba, Darboes, Scala, Gaya Art Cafe and Ali Babas!
We did 3 trips with Arch Tours who we can't recommend enough! Don't be put off by the 'bumsters', they are all very friendly and it made our holiday more enjoyable chatting to them. We also went to the Serekunda Craft Market at the top of the strip. We loved it here! Had lots of clothes made and enjoyed haggling with the locals!
Overall, The Gambia is an amazing place and The Senegambia is a great base. The Vulture feeding was great and there are lots of activities to do during the day such as volleyball and water polo. We loved it and will definitely be back!

This was a fabulous holiday!!!!! But.....
Our first night here was awful! Having been up since before 4am, in order to catch the very early Thomas Cook flight from Gatwick, all we wanted to do on arrival in the late afternoon, was to go to bed. My partner's head hit the pillow and she was out like a light. Sadly, I wasn't and then the band struck up! Our room was only about 50 metres from the stage and the noise of constant repetitive non-stop African drumming for the next few hours was excruciating! When it was followed by an almost equally loud Bingo caller I could have screamed!
As the hotel was, apparently, full, there was no chance of changing rooms when I enquired the next morning. "Come back tomorrow."
The next night wasn't so bad and, although the Olympic Rep did raise it with the hotel, we were on an full days trip the next day and decided to stay put. No other night was a problem! (I think they may have turned the volume down and they never again went on beyond 10 or 11 o'clock.)
That said, although the room was certainly basic (no kettle or drinks, no hair drier, twin beds, although double requested, tired decoration, no comfy chairs) the hotel gardens were attractive, rich with bird life and crazy with cheeky monkeys!
The beach and nearby pool area and bar was generally very crowded and busy, with constant background music (not our scene!) but the other pool, near the main hotel, was quiet and offered shade or sun for lounging.
As others have said, the breakfasts are superb.... unlimited and all varieties!
We didn't use the hotel's own restaurants but those around it are great.

Room Tip: Those nearer the beach are a bit of a walk from the main hotel and the quieter swimming pool.

How anyone can give a bad review of this hotel is beyond me - however I am getting ahead of myself lets start from the beginning.

First of all the flight over is around 6 hours and flying with Thomas Cook does not give a lot of legroom - I am 6'1" and now know what a battery hen feels like! So after we land a huge tip I picked up from reading these reviews is to have some pound coins ready, you are going to need them! When getting your cases they will be literally wrestled away from you by a porter who asks you your hotel and you are away with great speed to the coach - when he arrives at said coach he expects a tip so that £1 then believe it or not the guy who pickes up the cases and puts them on the coach expects another tip (£1) so off we go it was about 30mins to get to hotel and yes you guessed it another tip needed for the bus driver!!
The hotel check in is fairly painless just a form to fill in and then off to your room - the first room we found ourselves in was in D block which seemed along way from hotel - we found the aircondition only had one setting and toilet did not flush and drain would not drain - So went to reception not happy - they were very sorry but could not do anything as they had a big event going on but check back next day and they would move us. So next day we were moved to bottom room in G block PERFECT! yes the room is basic however very clean and in the middle of everything so very happy!

Where this hotel is head and shoulders over everywhere else is the grounds, two choices of swimming pools ( quiet and more noisy) we took in turns going to each one - but the best is the wildlife, you couldn't walk outside without seeing a monitor lizard or amazing coloured bird or the odd cheeky monkey!

Daily activities is fun and the water aerobics is a great work out ( so my partner says ;).

Make sure you use arch tours for any tours you go on - we went to the safari tour and can highly recommend it.

So much we enjoyed about this holiday vulture feeding, monkeys, great staff, restaurants ( highly recommend Love2 and African Queen) relaxed atmosphere, great breakfast with huge choices and by the way we had no problems in getting a sun bed every day of our stay.

We will definitely be back one day!

Room Tip: Rooms in G block is nicely placed and quiet.

This was the 3rd time we have stayed at The Senegambia and enjoyed our stay very much. We are bird watchers and the gardens are full of birds and butterflies. Our room had been refurbished and the bathroom was much improved since our last visit in November.
The staff are friendly and helpful, our room cleaner, Alpha, kept our room spotless and was always cheerful even though he was always busy. The gardeners were also very cheerful and pointed out some birds to us.
Minor criticisms were the water leaks at every garden tap (although the birds enjoyed the drinks) and two major pipe leaks during our 2 week stay, although this didn't affect our room, our neighbours had to decamp at midnight due to water coming through their ceiling. Obviously all the pipes need replacing fairly swiftly.
The beach is eroding but that's nature and I don't think the hotel can take the blame for that.
We enjoyed our birding trips with Ebrima W Barry to Brufut Woods, Tanji and Marakissa and saw some fabulous new species. We would reccomend Ebrima highly he has his own vehicle and web site and is a careful driver.

Room Tip: We enjoy the garden view rooms as we are nature lovers

We stayed at the Senegambia for 10 days in February. As it was our first trip to the Gambia I can't compare the hotel to others in Gambia but we have traveled extensively in both South America and in Asia (often on a shoestring) so we are fairly seasoned when it comes to expectations of standards abroad.

Although we had read about the beach erosion I was shocked to see how badly this was affecting the beach by the Senegambia.
The big bags of sand (which have been put in the water to stop further erosion) mean that you can't swim below the senegambia hotel. The sand bags are unsightly and a bit gross but you can avoid them by swimming further away from the senegambia hotel. The currents are very strong so this is not a beach that is suitable for children.

Our room (I 15) was damp and to be honest - a bit smelly. The shower curtain and grout were both a bit mouldy. The rooms are very basic- bring your own hairdryer and use the safe.
Breakfast was good, cereal, porridge, eggs, omelette, toast, and fruit etc.
The beach bar serves simple food for a reasonable price (£5 main) we enjoyed the African dishes (Yassa and domoda) the most.

The staff makes up for the hotels shortcoming! Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Jarra, (beach pool) Buba, Alagie and Lamin (beach bar) deserve a special mention.

The garden is beautiful and full of monkeys, birds and lizards.
