“Great time at Senegambia hotel”
Reviewed 6 April 2013

If you expect a european 5 star hotel - this is not the place for you... but if you are realistic, want to have a great holiday with comfortable (but basic) rooms then look no further. The rooms provided all you need - clean and comfortable. the showers could be cool on some days, but now we're home we have had to turn the heat down! the staff are all great fun, smiling all the time and happy to chat and provide information. Lovely pools and nice beach. Security to stop any busters entering. Great hotel

I have just come back from 2weeks at the Senegambia beach hotel arrived quite late and booking in was very quick and we was shown to our rooms they are very basic but we had our rooms cleaned everyday clean towels and the water was always hot. Air condition worked so was very pleased with the room the staff were really friendly and was very pleased to help you. There are two pools both located in nice areas one is quiet the other has all the games if u give the pool attendants a small tip they will save u a sun bed everyday in the same spot and it helps them as they are on a very small wage . Breakfast was very good plenty of variety eggs bacon cereals choice of breads meat cheese cereals something for everybody. Menu at dinner was very good by the beach very cheap as was the drinks waiters coming round asking what u wanted don't no about evening all ways went to the strip food was very good if u like Indian the Indian prince was very good but so was most of them. The gardens are very good in the hotel and the highlight of the day was feeding the monkeys they take peanuts out of your hands get some really great photos. If u are thinking of doing any trips I would recommended arch tours half the price of Thomas cook and they are so good the 4 in 1 is a must the staff carnt do enough for u big thanks to vj and rhino we did 3 trips and loved them all. Will be returning to gambia again and the Senegambia hotel

The room is small but clean. The bed is good. The TV has bad reception.
The garden is lovely. There are monkeys, birds and lizards. The monkeys eat peanuts out of your hand (and bags!), which makes for very nice pictures.
The staff is very friendly and always smiling.
The breakfast is good and the food at the pool is well-priced and not bad.
The animation team is very motivated. I never saw so many people joining the aquagym as here.
We never ate in the hotel in the evening because there are so many restaurants just outside the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not too close to the lobby for more privacy.

Had a fab time here in February for my partner's 50th. Easy journey by taxi from the airport. £12.
had to have 2 rooms as first one was a twin when requested a double, but easily remedied without hassle.Yes the rooms are basic, yes they are tired, but its all there. A fridge, fan, a/c, tv and bathroom. it's africa so it's basic, had the usual hassle with bumsters on the beach, but just be polite and say no thanks.
Arch tours is THE place for trips. they were professional and great fun. Many different restaurants to choose from, so don't be afraid to go B&B (we did). meals are generally half what you would pay at home. cute little craft market at the top of the strip if you dont mind the haggle - if not hotel shop is fine for small jewellery or wood items. Would recommend and would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Lower ground better for the birds and monkeys

Having read other reviews about the 'basic' accommodation, seeing the room was a bit of a shock initially but soon got over it (tip - don't jump out of bed - you''ll hit the wall) - you only really sleep there so as long as you coordinate walking around, you can manage the lack of space (though oddly enough the bed is wide enough for about 4 people). Balcony is really a shared walk-way to the room so no actual privacy on the first floor rooms.

Overall the hotel is fine - the breakfast was OK (book B&B - the local restaurants are great) with enough choice.

The beach is dirty, only to be expected as the erosion (and lack of rain) means it never gets 'washed' but the pool areas are clean and there are sufficient sun-beds (and a tip goes a long way to securing your own spot for the holiday).

The lower pool is busy \ lively \ noisy with various activities during the day - the top pool if quiet & peaceful - just choose whichever suits you best.

Eating out is easy and you can find things to suit all budgets. Working on an exchange rate of around 50 D to the pound (and it varies day by day) starters are between 100 - 250 D with mains at around 250 - 500 D. The local beer is around the 50 - 100 mark but if you just want to drink you can shop around ('offers'. happy hours etc). Don't forget - 15% tax on everything.

There are some really good restaurants, to suit all tastes - honourable mention to the Africa Queen for good food, lively atmosphere and great service.

The so-called bumsters are not really a problem - everyone has to make a living and most people are selling something (money exchange, excursions, themselves as 'friends' ) - if you don't want to buy what they are offering just politely decline.

There is free WiFi access in the hotel lobby for keeping up with the news and you can get the BBC World Service & CNN in the room.

Take a travel kettle and supplies - there are no tea \ coffee making facilities in the room and if one of you is an early riser (and the other isn't) you really need something to keep you going until breakfast.

Take round two-pin plug adapters and play 'hunt the socket' - usually at ground level and hidden from view (behind cupboards \ case stands etc)

Overall a good standard for a 3* in Africa - just don't expect the same standards as the UK \ Europe.

Room Tip: Take a travel kettle Rooms nearer the beach are quieter Basic accommodation but quiet clean

Just had two weeks here and I can truly say we had an amazing time. As said by other travellers the rooms are basic but what do u expect in a third world country? Get out and about and u will realise that it is a four/five star hotel for Gambia. The rooms were cleaned every day to a very high standard we had clean towels every day and beds changed every three days. Pool was great we always went to the noisier one and yes we did tip the pool boys so we got the same spot but hey it helps them and makes my stay more enjoyable win win. The staff are all friendly and can not do enough to help you. Highlight of everyday was feeding the monkeys loved it they are so cheeky and friendly:) Breakfast really good no complaints there also lunchtime snacks very good. We always ate out at night some lovely reastraunts although our favourite was Indian Prince.

If you go on a trip you will not regret booking with Arch Tours we had three trips with them and I enjoyed every one. Abdul (the boss man) is a great guy and believes in great customer service if u don't like the trip u don't pay. Believe me you will love it the staff are all amazing and look after your every need and pack in so much the 4 in one is a must, by far the best trip. A special thanks to VK and Rhino fantastic days out you were both so helpful and informative love u guys x on the trips u get to see how the Gambians live and also visit schools, it was very humbling and makes you realise how lucky we are. We took loads of pencils books and sweets also donated money. If you have room for old clothes they appreciate those to.

We were not bothered by bumsters and a firm no they will leave you alone. This was our first time in Gambia and would we go back again yes we would and we will be staying at the Senegambia again. For such a short flight it's amazing sunshine with lots of lovely people.

The only complaint that we had was we noticed that after a couple of days our lovely blonde hair was going a rusty colour, we thought it was the chlorine in the pool but on speaking to a few other blonde ladies they said it was the shower as they never went in the pool so be aware of this as at the end of the two weeks we were quite red lol. Worth it though for such a wonderful holiday.

Had the most fantastic week here in mid March. We found the hotel to be everything we expected, we stayed in Block I, nearer to the main pool and it was great for us. The room was clean and had all we needed for a weeks holiday, a comfy bed, shower, fridge and safe. The room was cleaned and the towels changed every day. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and really well looked after, there is little that can be done about the beach but take a walk along and it is fine. With regards to loungers by the pool, we cheated and gave the staff at the pool a tip on day one, we had the same, fantastic, beds every day-This is Gambia!

I had both a massage and a pedicure in the hotel beauty room and found both good value for money.

We stayed bed and breakfast and although we only managed to make breakfast 3 times found it to be full of options, I especially enjoyed the omlettes and fresh friut ( oh and the local Wonjo juice)

We ate out every night, the highlights being Love2 and JoJo's, the food in both of these was amazing and such good value. Follow food by a trip to Ali Babbas garden for live music and then dancing in Aquarius or Papparazzi and the nights a good one.

I would certainly return to the Senegambia and would recommend it to others as a great place to stay, yes the Bumsters are there when you walk out the door, but we found it nothing that couldn't be dealt with, smile, decline, move on. If great weather and great people are for you then give it a go.
