We have just returned from the Sheridan Hotel in Gambia( our third time) it is truly wonderful, the staff are so friendly, go out of their way to talk to you. The grounds are kept to a very high standard as is the beach in front of the hotel. The food is amazing, congratulated the French chief on the very high standard.the Spar is really good and very reasonable, all the paintings on the walls by Sesay are a nice addition, we still have the painting we brought on our first visit hanging in our kitchen,so thank you Sheridan hotel for making our holiday special once again and look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Our room was in the 09 block nice sea view and very quiet

Room: ground floor, decent sized with partial sea view. Had a bath and a shower room. Rooms could be sprayed with mosquito repellant upon request at no additional charge. Plenty of electrical sockets (uk 3 pins) to charge your cameras etc.
Reception: issues or questions resolved in seconds, very efficient.
Food: excellent. Great choice, fresh, local and international cuisines. Excellent service from chefs and waiters
Bar and restaurant: staff are so friendly and wait on you hand and foot. Thank you to everyone that helped me to learn some Wolof. Sometimes lunch/dinner would be held outside if the weather was cold, but outside if it was warm.
General: gardens are amazingly maintained. Lovely wall mural paintings around the grounds. The interior is not perhaps what you might expect from a european standard, but was adequately comfortable.
Out and about: Taxi drivers paid by the hour (2 hours = d300) and are usually parked in the car park, or can be booked in advance. The Senegambia strip is full of tourist bars and restaurants with Europeans cuisines. The craft market is not terribly exciting. The monkey park is well worth a visit! We also visited a couple of local schools (with some stationery gifts). The 'roots tour' was a bit staged and the locals seemed to be milking it, but a nice trip along the river. Makasutu was definitely our best excursion. Hotel is situated on a private beach; outside of this area the locals can be very persistent when talking to you.

I know that a hotel is not responsible for the weather but we were expecting in excess of 30degC, it may have been that if sheltered from the wind, but with the north westerly wind it was about 20degC. We spoke to people who consoled us by saying it is winter and the bad weather is only generally only for 4 or 5 days at a time; which turned out to be the case.

The setting of the hotel is good, all rooms have a sea view and balcony. As mentioned in other reviews the rooms are a little dated but they are large and clean with comfortable beds.
The buffet meals are reasonably good with plenty of choice but were a bit boring after three or four days. There is no “a la carte” restaurant in the hotel and the “a la carte” menu is sandwiches, burgers and pasta. The hotel is quite a distance from town so there are no restaurants in walking distance.

The only bar is adjacent to the swimming pool and is not enclosed so was not a comfortable place to sit for a pre or post dinner drink with the cool windy weather.
The swimming pool is large and there a plenty of loungers.
The staff are charming and very helpful.

We took a taxi on a couple of days to see other parts of the town. Serrekunda market was interesting with plenty of fruit, vegetable, meat and fish stalls plus some clothing. The market was busy but we were not hassled. The woodcarvers market at Brikama was interesting with many workshops selling a variety of things from fridge magnets to enormous heads/masks. We were invited into each workshop and asked to buy things but there was no high pressure selling. There is a livestock market opposite the woodcarvers where lots of goats and cows were for sale.

We took the Roots tour to Kunte Kinte Island which was a full day and involved a long boat trip. It was good to be on the river but there was nothing very exciting at the village or island and the story of the slave trade was a bit repetitive and told nothing new.

One day we decided to walk along the beach to the fishing village which is about a mile from the hotel. There was a large fleet of fishing boats and we were told there was a fish processing plant and fish market. Unfortunately we were hassled so much we turned back after about half the distance.

Room Tip: We had a Classic Room 5014 and the French windows opened directly onto the garden.

We thank you for your recent posting on tripadvisor.

It is great to see that you had a good time here and that the setting is great. Like you say when the wind comes up it can become chilly, especially at night!

We hope to see you again soon.

My wife and I stayed at the Sheraton Gambia between 25 Feb and 11 Match 2014. Paying an extra £644 for a deluxe beach palm. The room requested was an upper floor shown in the Gambia Experience brochure was all on as single level The room allocated was on the ground level, was very shabby and was on two levels, the bed on the upper level and a lounge area on the lower level, the height between the levels was 60cm. There was NO protective rail between the two levels.
On 1 March 2014 at at five in the morning my wife was making her way to the bathroom and fell from the upper to the lower level.
The result of the fall was two broken bones in her left arm, two very bad cuts on her forehead (now scarred for life) and bruising to both legs. Treatment for the injuries was under appalling conditions and her left arm was set in the wrong place. She has since had to be admitted to hospital to have the arm reset here in the UK.
There needs to be a rail fitting between these two levels to prevent this happening again and ruining someone else holiday

Room Tip: Don't select a deluxe palm beach room

As soon as you accept that this hotel, although a Sheraton, isn't up to European Sheraton standards, you'll have a nice enough time. The interior decor is somewhat grim and tatty and the whole place would benefit massively from a facelift. Things are broken/missing which you wouldn't expect from this chain.
Our first room was unacceptable, bulbs missing, no bedside lamps (dark!) and not the standard we had booked and we had to wait until the next day before an alternative was available. This was dealt with graciously but was still a pain as we couldn't unpack and we were only there for a week. Second room was fine, sea view, king bed and much nicer, but the dust, wreathed inside the wicker type lamps was impressive and we had no soap for the washbasin all week! The standard of cleaning was "ok" but only that. My used coffee cup sat on the TV stand all week! Shower was excellent though with lots of hot water.
The gym was ok and my husband did use it every day but some of the equipment was out of order....And we did hear some ladies complaining about the quality of the spa treatments. They didn't seem to be up to what they expected and they'd booked the resort because it claimed to be a spa retreat! When we asked the young lady in charge about the difference between the many types of massage offered, she didn't seem to know and looked very blank....but I suppose they were cheap compared to the UK....
The best bit of the hotel were the extensive, well tended gardens and pool area and the fact the resort sits right on the beach. The staff will put your sun lounger where you want it, get you an umbrella (essential) and sort your towels out and a small tip goes a long way and seems only fair considering they get so little. The beach was clean and the occasional Bumsters didn't dare come up into the gardens. (We spent a few hours one day on the beach up near Kotu and the hassling was INCESSANT!)
Food was good and plentiful under the direction of the French chef who made it his business to talk to guests to make sure all was well. There were extensive choices and something for everybody. Evening dining was semi alfresco and all meals were buffet style with the addition of a grill choice every night.
Because of the hotel's somewhat remote but mercifully quiet location, it's much better to opt for the all inclusive deal here. There was absolutely nothing (but litter!) outside the resort and The Strip's restaurants (where you will get gently but persistently hassled) was a 10/15 min taxi ride north. Being able to get soft drinks, tea, coffee and even alcohol throughout the day without worrying about the extras mounting up was good.
One downside, and this was nothing to do with the hotel, was the calibre of some of the guests. There seemed to be a preponderance of the obese, extremely obese, tattooed, smoking/drinking variety. Couldn't work out why. Fortunately, they made more of an effort in the evening and covered up.
I wouldn't recommend paying the inflated prices for the excursions offered by the rep LT either. For ease of booking we opted for the, Wake Up With The Birds one and it was truly dreadful. Think, Go to a swamp (Lamin Lodge) and see some sparrows and other mundane, distant birds flitting over a rubbish dump....
Everything The Gambia Experience offer can be arranged privately with the local taxi drivers and it's much better value. Ask the taxi booking chap in the hotel foyer. The Gambian people were lovely and the hotel staff wonderfully friendly. The weather and the people make this country and as a winter sun destination with no jet lag and only a 6 hour flight away, it's hard to beat....at the right price. We got a deal on our stay and the hotel as it stands was only worth what we paid. Having said that, and knowing what we know now, we might be tempted back when the rotten English winter weather gets too depressing!

Room Tip: The Baobab beach ground floor rooms open straight out onto the gardens but 5006 set up the hill was...

This time, i am a bit disappointed. In The Gambia there is a large offer of luxury hotels and what goes against the hotels succeeding i believe is
Location (very far away from everything)
Interior is not on same level as other Sheraton hotels, their problem is that they cannot import spare parts for their techno and infrastructure so they have to use local spare parts, which has a big influence on the efficiency.
Waited for a waiter for 35 min when i wanted to have a drink and food to watch the sunset.. not accepted on my part at this type of hotel...

We thank you for your recent posting on the Sheraton Gambia Hotel Resort & Spa.

As you say when it comes to location we are a 20 min drive away from Senegambia, bur we defintely a very scenic location and beach. The F&B team will also look into the matter of the long wait for a waiter.

We hope to see you back again in Sunny Gambia soon !

This was our third visit to Gambia, but the fist stay at th e Sheratoin.
What a fantastic setting, long , long beaches, lovely grounds, very relaxing.
A very nice all inclusive hotel, the food was good, and plenty of it, with lots of attention payed to getting things right.
Plenty of choice, hot or cold, and choices to suit everyone.
The staff are very good, well done to BERNADETTE in the restaurant, nothing was to much trouble to her, to make sure all was ok for us, and other guests, first clkass service all thev time.
Drinks, fantastic, and plenty.
Rooms all have great views of the sea, although a lick of paint needed here and there.
If you want to relax, this is the place.
The room cleaning was first class, well done to our guy looking after 5018, he did a graet job.
Sadly it is the guests who let things down, some come into the evening meal in shorts and flip flops, one with his shirt wide open, I am sure he does this back home ( NOT ) and it lowers the tone a bit.
However, nearly all the guests dessed up realy smart, well done to you all, it put those that did not bother to shame.
Management must inforce the dress code for evenong meal.
Over all everything was geat, and yes we will return,
Well done to our rep L.T. always there, always bang on, every one loves him, he watches over everything for his guests.
Even the Banjul airport puts Gatwick to shame, certainly on our return flight, where Gatwick could just not get things right on arrival of our plane, Millions spent, and wasted for basic service they cannot get right.
Well done Gambia.

Room Tip: All rooms are good, but a beach one seems to be the best.
