Lovely hotel a bit out of the way so quite which was what we were looking for. Service , rooms and overall impression was better than we have had in Europe so to get it in TG was unexpected. Beach and grounds were well maintained with bar staff very helpful. Food varied and well presented with staff serving professional
Overall a great holiday in a great location

This was our first time to The Gambia and we loved it, what made it especially good was the amazingly friendly and helpful people everywhere we went including this hotel. Everyone smiles, says hello, can't do enough for you and treat you like long lost friends. The hotel resort itself is in a great location right on the beach, all the public areas including reception, pool, bar and restaurant are in great condition and the paintwork on the external building was amazing, in addition you'll love the tree of African weaver birds right outside the main reception. We had food at the buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner and were never disappointed and the one time we ordered room service it was just as good. My only complaint is the rooms need seriously spruced up, they're a good size and layout and we had a fantastic view of the beach but despite being cleaned everyday the room never felt quite 'clean' due to the damaged furniture, marks on the walls and leaky A/C and we really wished we'd brought mosquito nets as the room was consistently invaded by all kinds of flying creatures and one night I was bitten. Yes I know its Africa and insects are to expected but not in a 5 star Sheraton hotel surely?

My husband and myself visited The Gambia for the first time back in November . I have been meaning to write a review ever since but i guess better late than never is a good a motto as any .
When we first arrived at the Sheraton i was actually a bit nervous having never met the people before and in the first instance the ladies in reception seemed quite abrupt ... but after a few minutes i came to realise that this was just their way and found that actually they were very helpful and lovely young women (especially after they gave me a chilled glass of wonjo juice and a cool towel).
When we arrived in the bar shortly after arrival (as our room wasnt quite ready ) i was gasping for a ciggarette and a drink and i was greeted by the most lovely and welcoming smile ...... "welcome to the smiling coast .... what can i get for you ? You can sit anywhere you like " this was my friend Bob . Lets not forget Yaya and Prospierre . Yaya with his amazingly fun and friendly attitude who when my husband was poorly for a day rushed off to get him some boabab juice as it is good for the tummy and Prospierre who always gave me a smile .
The food was plentiful and of good quality and our room was clean and quiet and great air con ,right on the beach . The entertainement was great and the waiting staff were always attentive ......
Yes there could be some improvements to the decor a lick of paint here and there but service is everything and in my opinion it was outstanding ... please send Yaya ,Bob,and Prospierre our regards and thoughts

We visited the Sheraton Gambia hotel in October to celebrate a family birthday. Having been to Gambia many times before, and always visiting the same hotel (Kombo Beach Hotel) we decided to try a different hotel given the special occasion. Thinking the Sheraton name would guarantee us a quality hotel and resort we opted to holiday here despite a far more expensive price tag than our usual destination.
This was a big mistake. Do not be fooled by the Sheraton name. There was nothing luxury about this hotel at all. From the moment we arrived at the hotel we had nothing but problems. On being escorted to our room, a junior suite, we were horrified to find the room infested with cockroaches, ants (thousands of them) and spiders. We immediately brought this to the attention of staff who advised that they would have the room treated. They certainly appeared to do so as on our return to the room later in the day we were met with dead bugs all over the suite. We had not long cleared the suite of the bugs when more started to appear in both the living room and bedroom areas. We again raised this with staff who appeared uninterested and consequently we asked to speak with management. The manager whom responded was every bit as useless as his staff showing very little interest in our complaint.
Eventually we were allocated another room, a basic room which cost a lot less than the junior suite we had payed for and there was no refund forthcoming. On moving to our second room we found it to be almost as bad but having little energy left to do another round with the manager we put up with it.
The rooms weren't this hotels only let down. The All Inclusive package was far from all inclusive. We were made to pay for bottled water and also ended up paying for bar snacks as an alternative to the food on offer in the hotel restaurant which was dreadful, and with very little variety. On one occasion I visited the bar and requested a pint of lager only to be given a glass which was made up from the leftovers from a number of other glasses. There was also no Air conditioning in the restuarant and public areas of the hotel, which in the African heat really is laughable.
The hotel pool was never cleaned during our stay and one of our party after a few dips in the pool came out in a nasty rash. The chemical levels seemed overly high.
Finally the hotel grounds, whilst tidy enough, were over run by bugs. I'm not stupid enough to expect such a hot country to be bug/insect free however the grounds of this hotel were infested. This hotel turned out to be very expensive and very disappointing. Having visited The Gambia before we know the Gambian people to generally be very warm and friendly however the staff at this hotel were obviously the exception, uninterested and unwilling to engage.
The only positive from the holiday was the fantastic Gambian weather, which rarely disappoints. In conclusion this hotel is poorly run, dreadfully managed and undeserving of the Sheraton name. Unless you have money to throw away, avoid this hotel like the plague.

Dear Guest,

we appreciate your feedback with regards to your stay in October 2013.
Your comment with regards to the presence of insects and the poor response from our teams team have been noted.

We are happy to inform you that the changes we made (in November 2013) to the way our our landscaping and housekeeping team works, has massively reduced the presence of insects. Most of our guests now rate the cleanliness of our rooms and hotel grounds as excellent.

At the same time, we carried out a company wide service culture training and from many of the other comments we receive, we are confident that our associates are our biggest asset to our hotel.

Despite your not so positive impression, we do hope that on your next visit to The Gambia you will pay us a visit and will be convinced yourself.

This hotel has all the facilities expected from a quality resort - spa, pools, gardens etc - but this doesn't tell the whole story. The biggest asset was undoubtedly the local staff, all of whom were cheerful and willing to help whenever asked. The downside was the state of the building and apparent inability of the management to see the problems. Apart from a general air of fatigue, probably due to it being the end of the season and unerstandable, there were maintenance problems that could be sorted with the will and a little effort. For example, we quickly spotted that the patio door in our room was damaged, having been forced open with a twisted frame and missing handle, making it insecure. i drew this to the attention of a manager whose response was that several locks had been faulty and jammed. The damage was due to staff forcing entry. It apparently hadn't occurred to them to replace the lock before using the room again (incidentally there were several empty rooms allowing alternatives).
This attitude doesn't help the image of the hotel or Sheraton generally. We will be looking for other hotels when we return to the Gambia.

It does not give me any pleasure to write this as this was our 4th visit to this hotel, but every day this hotel stays open in it's current state it is damaging it's own reputation and that of the Sheraton group. We are aware we visited at the end of the season and the hotel was almost empty, but there was no sign of anyone doing any improvements or maintenance.

The beach front location and exterior of the hotel are superb. The design and architecture are beautiful and blend effortlessly with the environment. However, I genuinely don't think the insides of the rooms have seen a lick of paint since the hotel was opened. The coving to the ceilings had large gaps in the corners and there was a large crack below the doors to the beach suggesting possible bigger problems. Areas of paint were bubbling due to possible damp and the lock on the doors had been broken off at some point and "fixed" by blanking off the outside of the lock and screwing a plate to the inside which meant we couldn't lock it from inside. Every morning we had little piles of fine sand on the floor, presumably where ants had bed digging (or at least that was how they looked).
The bedding we had would have been thrown away if it was ours at home and the quilt itself was really lumpy as if it had been washed in a machine. The "black-out" curtains looked like they had been used in the shower scene in Bates's Motel which made a very interesting light show every morning.

I am fully aware that we were in Africa and so did not wish to complain to the hotel staff as I feel it would have made us sound incredibly pampered and fussy, but this is supposed to be a Sheraton, and it simply does not hit the mark any more. It costs almost double to stay there compared to other 3 star hotels and this is certainly not reflected in the standard of the rooms any more.

We regard to food etc. we always choose to stay B&B instead of the AI which is the norm. Firstly we do not agree that staying in hotels on an AI basis is a good idea as we believe that your holiday will be greatly enhanced by going out, meeting local people and spending money in local bars and restaurants, but also, the Sheraton represents appalling value for money. We only had breakfasts and a couple of lunches, but none of them were particularly special. The orange juice at breakfast was more like a cordial and the rest of the breakfast was quite dull. The service varied from pleasant on some days to appalling on others. On the whole I felt the female staff were much friendlier than the male ones for some reason.

We did not spend much time or money in the bar during the day, but when we did it was quite often difficult to get the waiters attention, particularly when we hadn't tipped the previous day!
Saying that, the gardeners, and all those working outside were very friendly and pleasant and always engaged when they saw you. The reception staff were courteous and polite.

I really hope there is plans to upgrade this hotel as we genuinely do not want to stay elsewhere on our next visit, but unless there is an upgrade I feel we shall have no option given the cost of this hotel than to look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ensure you upgrade to a better room if one is available. The beach-front rooms are well worth the ad...

Dear Guests,

many thanks for your feedback.

Your comments regarding the upkeep of the hotel have been duly noted. By no means are we willing to drop our standards and rest assured that extensive maintenance is being done every done on the property, including painting, carpentry and others.

The black-out curtains will soon be replaced by new ones - the samples have just arrived and we are finalising the replacement of all.

The culinary team will ensure that your restaurant and bar experience on your next visit is superb.
