“A LAKE IN A DESERT”
Review of Lake Turkana

Lake Turkana
Reviewed 28 August 2017

lake Turkana is a fresh water lake located in northern part of Kenya and is among the largest desert lakes in the world. The place has beautiful sceneries with hot breeze which makes it tough both in the day and at night and one is required to carry sufficient water for quenching frequent thirst. Among the activities one can engage in around the lake include fishing, boat riding and swimming though not recommended. In Turkana one can visit other places which include desert museum which is just on the northern part of the lake. The lake is truly one of the magnificent creations in the world.

When you drive either trough Chalbi desert or through the rocky highlands from the Samburu land, you will not trust your eyes about the beautiful desert lake in front of you. Truly one of the untouched spots of nature on this planet.
The weather is very hot and especially in the night very windy which makes it quite tough and exhausting, but the scenery makes you forgetting the physical challenging weather.

The lake is not recommended for swimming as there are lots of big crocs and hippos living in.

The east side of Lake Turkana is definetely worth a visit. Thanks to the Turkana windpower project Loyangalani is much easier to access than before. It is beautiful, dry and hot.
In Loyangalani you will be in the middle of different tribes (Samburu, Turkana, Rendille, El Molo etc.) living peacefully together. People are friendly and the lake is refreshing. Great place for relaxing in the heat.
Reserve enough time especially if you want to go to the islands and/or Sibiloi national park and/or drive through Chelbi desert.

If you have the opportunity to visit, don't pass it up. The adventurous journey there, the opportunity to learn firsthand about Samburu and Turkana people, the scenery all around, and finally the lake itself are all very much worth the arduous journey there. It is hot, windy, dusty and very uncomfortable. But it is so much worth it.
