I've stayed three times previously at Auberge le Festival. At one time this consisted of just the main block with 12v lighting, but which has grown over the years to include the 'castle rooms' and also some 'cave rooms', now all with 240v electrics. Addi, the owner, is more of a friend than a host and we have spent nights discussing current affairs and setting the world to rights.

From my first trip the recollection was of a wonderful breakfast and this hasn't changed. On this visit five drummers (three staff, two guests) set the gorge rumbling with the percussion as the stars came out. The auberge is set about 5-6km further north than the narrow section of the gorge which is where all the tourists stop. So be brave and venture further and be rewarded! It's a great area for walking and climbing, and Addi has outlined some routes you can use.

Highly recommended. One of the best places you can visit in Morocco.

When we booked our 12-day trip to Morocco, we wondered what it would be like to stay in a Troglodyte Room. When we arrived at the Auberge Le Festival, we discovered that it was nothing less than the most romantic cave in the world, with beautiful appointments, soft lights, a bathroom with fossil-studded fixtures, and a terrace for sitting out and looking at the stars. The auberge also has its own organic garden. Dinner, served by candlelight, featured a delicious gratin of vegetables, after which we were given a lantern to find our way back to our cave. The next morning, as we were having breakfast on the terrace, a herd of glossy black goats came climbing down the mountain along a very steep incline, and later they trotted along the dried riverbed right in front of the auberge. The nearby Todra Gorge is a scenic wonder, but the Auberge was beautiful in a more intimate way.

Room Tip: By all means, ask for a troglodyte room!

Most tourists only venture as far as the actual Todra Gorge , and as a result this "castle" a few kilometres further up the Gorge is wonderfully quiet and you really feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere. We stayed in one of the turrets , as the cave rooms were fully booked. The room was spacious , and had a gorgeous view from our own little priavte balcony. We had a lovely dinner here , and the staff were wonderfully friendly and sat and chatted with us for a while afterwards. They were fluent in English , which was nice after weeks of battling along in my schoolgirl french! I would say this is a much nicer option than the hotels at the mouth of the Gorge , which get overrun with tourists. Unfortunately the "hot tub" was not hot. Would be lovely to lie relaxing in it after a days hiking and exploring - don't know if it ever gets heated?

While a wind with force 10 was blowing through the valley, we had a cosy stay in Le Festival. Good food at night, live music afterwards.
The room was OK, but the wind was so fierce that we found sand in our bed when we woke up in the morning.

We came to Marocco for climbing in the Todra. We planned to stay in Le Festival for 5 days, but ended up staying 2 weeks! Simply because we liked it so much there. The location is beautiful. We got bikes from the hotel to go to the climbing spots, which mostly are located in the beginning of the Todra. The climbing offers a lot of variety; you can climb single-, multi-, trad-, and bolted routes in all difficulties. The lime-stone is of really good quality!
After long climbing days, it was delightful to go back to the hotel...
The rooms are beautiful (we stayed in a cave-room) and clean. The staff are so friendly and hostile. The food is one of the best we ever tasted! We had a perfect stay and hope to come back there again.

We unfortunately stayed in this place for only one night. We were with my three boys -- ages 15, 13 and 11 -- in two of their cave rooms. Too cool!! This was the second (of five) places we stayed on our 10 day journey through Morocco and definitely the one with the best atmosphere. The gorge itself is stunning with good walks surrounding it. However, for the best experience, get one of their guides (we had Karim who was wonderful!!) to take you further afield, especially to have tea with one of the Berber nomad families who frequent the area. This was an incredibly rewarding experience -- one that I'm sure my children will never forget. Oh, also, the showers here are awesome!! Hot, hot water with bathrooms that get good and steamy. (We were there in winter, so this was important!)

Amazing location inside the gorge, well-heated rooms in the winter and a cook which makes awesome food (even for vegetarians which is rare in Morocco). Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Go for the cave room- they are the best for all seasons
