Went here for a late Sunday breakfast. One of the specials was the "Elvis"..peanut butter and banana pancakes. Delicious! Had their homefries/egg skillet dish which was fantastic. Good coffee too!

“Adirondack Institution. A Must Stop”
Reviewed 23 March 2014

Started many a great day by having breakfast here and getting a sandwich for lunch for my pack. Food quality and taste is outstanding. Don't forget to order one of their paysannes for breakfast, a real treat.

Here is a tip. Although it looks like a full service restaurant, it is not. Simply go to the counter and get a menu and decide what to order and ask questions. You will need to know where your eating utensils, coffee, water, and jam are located. And you really need to know where the small self service bake good case is located.

Please understand I have a strong bias for places like the Saranac Sourdough. You get a taste of the community in places like these. You don't get a homogenized experience you can find just about everywhere in country. Here you get a taste of the area prepared by locals who are invested in the community. Of course all of us have different tastes and values. Places like this allow us to celebrate our our differences and diversity. Without places like the Saranac Sourgdough traveling would be definitely less entertaining and boring.

“Decent bagel, but an odd and surly experience”
Reviewed 8 January 2014

When you walk in, you have no idea what kind of place you have entered. No signage to direct you and you're greeted by the back of a 5 ft tall deli case. When my wife and I paused for a moment inside the door not sure how to proceed, a young man from way down the counter asked if we were there for breakfast or lunch. Not a question we had really thought about when entering what we thought was just a bagel shop. When we again hesitated (not sure of the difference between a breakfast bagel and a lunch bagel), we were then pointed at a pile of menus. 3 different ones, with a nervous grumble of which was for which meal. When I finally saw the word 'bagel' on one of them, I asked a logical question, or so you would think: "what kind of bagels do you have?" This was met with a very curt/surly response from a 50-or-so yr old woman who practically barked at us: "Just sourdough, the kind we make right here!" Amazing how those exact same words said with a smile instead of an attitude could have such different impacts on the customer, isn't it? We each ordered a bagel with cream cheese. When my wife added the word 'toasted' the same surly tone replied "always!" I am a man with a beard, and often don't want my bagel toasted because I get a face full of hot melted cream cheese. That means if we hadn't asked they would have toasted them anyway. That makes no sense. Why do something that takes time, that you can't undo, and that the customer may not want? While she was ringing us up, my wife and I both noticed they had a small case of fresh baked cookies. This excites us, we like cookies. We enthusiastically tell her to add 2 cookies to our bill, and before I go into how she looked at us like we were idiots for not realizing the baked goods were self service, or how we waited for 10 minutes to receive 2 very small, but decent, mildly-sourdough-ish, remarkably unremarkable, bagels, I'll mention that a family of 4-5 came in and had the EXACT same pause inside the door, not sure what to do, staring at a blank wall of fridge case. They also got the same surly crap from the woman who barked: "There are menus and specials down here!" Again, this was not said with a smile, nor any form of welcome. More like, hey dummy, the menus are over here!

Here's a few things they could do better: lay out your place like you have a clue, lose the attitude, simplify your processes/menus, decide if you are a diner or a deli, and at least post some signage giving people an idea of what they can expect, especially if you are going to have a 'tude about it. Good bagels, I'm sure the lunch fare was good as well, but this was a text book lesson in small biz fail 101. Be NICE, be SIMPLE, and don't make newbies feel lost/unwelcome. We'll probably be back because we enjoy Lake Placid, and much prefer to support a local biz over any chain (Mcdonalds is just a few hundred yards away), but we will definitely be prepared for the vibe/confusion next time, and it certainly wouldn't be a first choice.

Interesting lunch items and great breakfasts. Quite good, but seemed a little overrated by some locals.

“Fantastic breakfast with homemade food and it is children friendly”
Reviewed 30 October 2013

Nine of us walked in, 4 being children under age of 5. The minute you walk in you are greeted with a smile. They have homemade bread, cookies, muffins, etc....We ordered breakfast and had a choice of 8 different breads from white, wheat to rosemary olive oil. Quality food and reasonable prices. You definitely do not walk out hungry. And we felt very comfortable with our little ones. Can't wait to go back!
