“Train from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

The trip is nice but not that much better than just driving the 12 miles. It is fun for very young kids.

Reviewed 19 October 2013

Went by and it had a sign in the window closed to further notice due to vandalism. call before you go to make sure it's open. Saw the train that was sitting there and didn't look to nice to me.

“Relaxing and enjoyable”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

Rode the Adirondack Scenic Railroad from Saranac lake to Lake Placid, and back again. The train is fun, offering beautiful, scenic views and a pleasant ride. The crew is very friendly and the conductor points out things of interest along the way. Especially a lot of fun for the children who were on the train!. I just wish there would have been the opportunity to get out at either end and walk about the villages, however the depots, (esp. in Lake Placid), are not in the town itself, and there is only a very short time before you have to head back.

“A nice train ride.”
Reviewed 9 October 2013

We had an absolutely beautiful day for our scenic round trip train ride to Saranac Lake. We boarded at the beautiful Lake Placid station. Rosie (the engine) got us moving towards Saranac Lake, in the slow lumbering way that only a train can do. We rode in the open car, which was fantastic. The trees were just beginning to turn, but we did enjoy some great color. There was a huge lake that was created by the biggest beaver dam I have ever seen. We had several crossings, which involves many whistle blows. The train also passes by a beautiful cemetery. The nice conductor has a microphone and tells you about points of interest, train information, and the history of the railroad. There is a Pullman dining car, with seating and a decent cafe, selling hot and cold food, water, sodas, etc. Since we had almost two hour layover in Saranac Lake, we walked around town and had lunch there. The train station there is stunning. Between all of the walking, eating, and the slow rocking of the train, I almost fell asleep on the way back! We loved every minute of being on the train. You need to know that these are vintage cars: they are in good shape but are not like brand new. It's very expensive to keep a train running, and they are doing their best. Please drop something extra for them in the donation box inside the train station. That said, we had a great time and would do it again. Don't miss dining at one of the few remaining Howard Johnson's restaurants, located at the north end of Lake Placid. It's just as good as you remember!

“Not worth it”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

Not worth the time or money, was there 08/17/13, took the "scenic" trip. Train was a bit shabby but it's old so that was expected. The so called scenic views are just trees in the woods, can be seen anywhere in that region. The trip destination was Saranac Lake. But the train station is in dilapidated part of town across from abandoned buildings and we only had 20 mins to re-board for the return trip. Wouldn't do it again.
