Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 31 Hotels in Lake Placid

We enjoyed our stay at the Mirror Lake Inn very much. The staff was very friendly and helpful and our room was spacious and well decorated. You can't beat the view of Mirror Lake each morning and evening. We found that The View didn't meet our expectations but the breakfast buffet was really great. I loved the lobby too-sort of elegant but rustic. We highly recommend this hotel.

Together with more than a dozen family members and over a dozen friends attending a wedding, we stayed at the Mirror Lake Inn between September 3rd and 7th. It a nutshell, it was a major disappointment, in particular as all other aspects of the wedding were perfect (including the weather!!!). We booked over a dozen rooms, and used the hotel facilities extensively, so the experience below is based on the experience of quite a few people.

The property is historic, and one cannot accurately describe the beauty of its location at the edge of the lake, as well as of downtown Lake Placid. There is an excellent spa there, and the public areas are comfortable. The buildings (there are several) are old, and they do not appear to have been renovated in years. If you are handicapped (as our 87 years-old grandmother is), you’ll have to walk quite a distance from your room to the hotel restaurants and Front Desk, and take two elevators, if your room is not in the main building. Nevertheless, that was not the main point of concern.

The rooms, uniformly, belong to the 1970s and 80s. The furnishings are old, mismatched and falling apart - e.g. in our room 739, the drawers under the TV were coming apart when pulled, there are large nails/staples sticking out in the rattan patio chairs, the bed mattress is lumpy, the carpet is intense green (which predominated during the time of the Beatles), and repair of the facility seems to be an afterthought.

The biggest problem, though, with this hotel is the service. The rooms are cleaned haphazard (one person, no more than 15’), and late (i.e. regularly after 2:00 p.m., even when one asks for the room to be cleaned earlier). Their cleaning staff, God bless them, have to work with antiquated equipment (I've seen vacuum cleaners which seem to have been buit in the '80s), and also have to pull double-duty, at least during the Labor Day weekend, by helping guests check into their rooms. Thus, they rush through cleaning the rooms, and forget "stuff", such as towels, changing the toilet paper (which, by the way, is like Scotts - transparent, cheapest there is), etc.. One has to ask for evening turn-down service (in a luxury property, member of Small Luxury Hotels, one should not have to do this), and if they don't forget (they did forget mine the first evening), they'll do it late (i.e. close to 9:00 p.m.).

At the bar, one has to order his/her drinks at the bar - the barman will REFUSE service if you are seated at one of the bar tables, even if there is a larger party of four or six, as he will not get out from behind the bar to take an order!?!?! At least the drinks he made were excellent.

The restaurant food is good (we had breakfast and dinner in the main dining room, and a special function as well). The service, though, is uneven, as they have many foreigners from Eastern Europe with varying degrees of English, in addition to their permanent staff. This issue of uneven training is prevalent even among the English-speaking staff. For example, the Front Desk staff on Friday, the 4th, did not know where their ice machines are located, sending me to the wrong floor, and then, not knowing how ot secure the proper information!

Finally, when you reserve a group of rooms, make sure you negotiate ahead of time "late" check-outs. They have over 100 rooms, yet, they could not keep one room for late checkout (i.e. past 11:00 a.m.!?!?!) on a Monday after Labor Day weekend, even though we had booked two dozen rooms at over $350/night/room for several days. And the "lovely" Front Desk Manager gave us an indignant "attitude" when we pointed out that the bride needed to change before leaving town at 1:00 p.m.

In a nutshell, look elsewhere. There are several outstanding resorts, either within walking distance or a 10' drive, which are similarly or cheaper priced, but offer better service, nicer and larger rooms and facilities, and much, much better service.

This property has seen its better days some years ago (my extended family has been coming to Lake Placid for five generations!), and unless its owners really do a major upgrade, you're well advised to try some of the other fine hotels.

We stayed at the Mirror Lake Inn for only 1 night, and wish we could have stayed longer...As a part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), the inn meets the expectations. The surroundings are beautiful, especially during the foilage season (around early October). The room was very nice, the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the breakfast is served in a very nice room overlooking the hills.

The hotel exceeded our expectations. We had absolutely no complaints! Room was extremely clean and comfortable. We took the rise and shine plan which we would highly recommend. We also booked a one night dinner package for the View. The Chef knows his stuff. The food, service, location were all top notch. Water sports were enjoyed by the entire family and the teens liked the indoor and outside pools as well, My only complaint- why did this vacation end so fast.

My family and I were on our way back from a few wonderfull days in New York city and wanted to rest a night in Lake Placid before heading to Montreal. We wanted to treat ourselves so we booked at this 4 DIAMOND resort for 385$ a night (Over our usual budget for family travelling)

The room;
Dissapointing compared to the web site pictures, we definitely did not get the room in the picture. Our two boys were sleeping on the sofabed. When we came back from dinner around 9 PM, housekeeping had not come in to prepare the beds. Room cleanup and prepping in the evening are usually the norm in fancy hotels I've been to.

Breakfast;
We waited "15 minutes" to be seated for breakfast!!! After a few minutes of just standing there, I asked a nice housekeeper if she could check were the hostess was?? She checked and informed me politely that the hostess was busy!!!! .....anyways....we finally got seated 6-7 minutes later. (Nobody else was waiting to be seated at that time but us, and the restaurant had only a few tables that were occupied) I guess 9AM is not a good time to show up for breakfast.
My eggs benedict were good. My wife had the french toast and wondered if they had dropped the salt shaker on it...the kids had Cheerios. I had to ask twice to get my coffee cup re-filled...If this is 4 diamond service, I wonder what no diamonds is???

The spa;
My pregant wife had a massage there and she said it was absolutely wonderfull.

We won't be going back...

MLI, General Manager at Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa, responded to this reviewResponded 20 August 2009

Dear Chris,

Thank you for choosing the Mirror Lake Inn. We are sorry that we did not meet all of your expectations.

We have been very careful to ensure that our web site is accurate and gives enough information so that our guests have a clear understanding about the Mirror Lake Inn. We give a very detailed description of our location, amenities and the type of resort we are. Our map shows a clear layout of the grounds and there is a picture of each category of rooms including the room you reserved. Our records indicate that at check in you requested a different room and this is why the picture you saw did not exactly match the room you were in. Over the years we have found that most of our guests prefer not to be disturbed with automatic turndown service but we are happy to provide turndown service upon request.

I am sorry that you had to wait for breakfast. We are the most popular restaurant in the area for breakfast and for dinner and occasionally there is a wait especially at the busiest time of 9-10am for breakfast and 7-8pm for dinner. I am sorry that your wife did not enjoy her breakfast and had you let us know at that time we would have been able to immediately correct the situation. Our Restaurant Supervisor was made aware later that day that you were not pleased with your breakfast and that was the reason for her phone call and the reason she followed up her phone call with an email. We are sorry that we did not hear back from you. I am glad that you enjoyed your Eggs Benedict and that your wife had an absolutely wonderful massage.

We wish you the best with your soon to be new addition to your family. We hope that you will reconsider and visit us again soon.

Sincerely,
Carl Gronlund, General Manager

Lake Placid in the Fall is enchanted, and the Mirror Lake Inn is the place to be. As I am writing this review, I am thinking back to many wonderful memories of staying at this resort. Over the past 20 years, we have taken our family here many times to experience the East Coast change of the seasons and enjoy relaxed family time.

The rooms are large, although lightly rustic. The views of the lake are spectacular. There are nice places to relax with your family both indoors and outdoors.

We stayed in the Adirondack Suite in the Lake Cottage for 2 nights on my birthday trip through upstate NY. Our cozy room had remote control drapes, a lake view and a neat custom bed. Each of the two nights we were surprised by the Inn with a special delivery of: champagne & cheese/cracker/fruit tray and then with fizzy water and chocolate covered strawberries--what a nice touch! We ended up eating all meals on site--and loved it all: lunch at the lakefront cottage which has a bar; dinner in the rich cozy pub, excellent gourmet restaurant for a breakfast and a dinner--and also room service. Our massages at the spa were great too. The location can't be beat at Lake Placid--it's right on the main street in town--yet at the quiet end. We walked around the whole lake (about 2 miles) and then grabbed a starbucks on the way home. We also toured the town by an electric car (e-cruiser) we rented just half a block down from our cottage. We normally stay a little more off the beaten path than this--but loved its proximity and comfort. The whole stay was very charming. The white siding look of the outside buildings is different than the rich, wood paneled interior. We enjoyed a game of backgammon in the lodge-type common room and borrowed a DVD to watch in our room.
