The Kraal Backpackers

No "stress devices" can be charged here!

Stumbled into this place by chance after a punctured tire and it was one of the happiest accidents of our trip. A very basic but truly enjoyable of the grid experience supplied by solar panels and rain water. Spectacular scenery, pristine sandy beach with a rock pool area. Rondavel style accomodation. The absolute best walk for buying beers ever (nextdoor).

Dillon, who owns the place is the perfect host for the place.

Don´t miss the meals prepared by the next door neighbours.

Don´t expect to be served, this will be like your own home (resort lovers better refrain).

The Kraal is a very nice and off the grid experience and we liked it! The surrounding is beautiful and worth a visit and some hikes. The Kraal is off the grid and gives you a real nice experience of the wild coast. Do not expect comfort but a very nice place to stay. It is very eco friendly and that also means you have to adapt to it! If you do, the experience is great.

Don't be fooled, The Kraal isn't a hotel nor will you be able to sit down to a paid for cooked meal and waited on hand and foot. It is however a wonderful (self catering, bring your tabasco for the oysters!) wild coast experience. Dylan provides three huts, two doubles and a dorm for back packers, mainly hikers coming through on their way to Coffee Bay. The water in the showers is warm, the huts dry, and the kitchen clean and available. It is a completely off the grid environment. Esoteric is the theme and you will not be disappointed. Whales, dolphins and an abundance of sea life greet you for sunrise, the locals will provide you with fresh oysters, crayfish but all other food and supplies must be brought with. There are no shops anywhere close.. To get away from it all.. there are few places that compare..

We hiked down the Wild Coast, 300km. This backpackers is ok. We camped. It is on a hill, some distance from the beach. The view over the sea from the stoep is excellent. Supper was good but do not try breakfast. They did have a very good bottle of red wine, something you do not find around there often. The Milk Stout beer we bought close by was also excellent, R14 for 750ml.

This is a special place and if you don't mind roughing it, you are in for a treat. Dillon's place is off the grid and you feel like you have arrived at the end of the world, and it is a beautiful place to be!
Accomodation is in a dorm or rondavel and also great soft grassed tent sites. The Kraal is off the grid so all water is provided from rain cisterns. Toilets are septic. Solar power heats water and powers basic lighting. Put away your cell phone and appreciate Nature's gifts. Lovely pet dogs. It felt more as if we were guests sharing Dillon's home. He is a great guy and kept us entertained with his stories. Wood fired oven (great pizzas) and sauna. Call to the whales and dolphins and maybe they will come. Great rock pools for protected swimming.
Thanks Dillon! Come visit us one day, Bru.
