As a scuba diver, I have returned for 3 years in a row for the Sardine Run in June, and have stayed at the Port St John's River Lodge each time for between 7 and 14 days each visit. The hotel is ideally situated for the Sardine Run, being next to the river, with its own mooring, only a short boat ride to the sea.

The setting is beautiful, since the hotel is situated on the bank of the river at the foot of a small mountain (hill) on top of which there is the local airstrip. The airstrip is rarely used, and I do not remember ever hearing any noise from aircraft, even though I know for a fact that aircraft have used it while I have been staying there.

The food is good and plentiful. The staff are friendly and are willing to help with advice or practical assistance whenever I had any query. The showers in the rooms run on a 'geyser' system which I had to get used to, since I found them confusing to begin with. The rooms I have stayed in, have had a kettle, tea, coffee, also cooking facilities and a fridge (and a TV which I never used). The bar is friendly and played good music when I was there!

The accommodation is ideally suited to the adventure type of holiday that the Sardine Run is. If you are accustomed to five-star hotels in either London or New York, then I would suggest that you adjust your expectations to the more rural environment of Port St John's. The price is appropriate to this, so you will not be paying anything like the same rate!

Arrived late evening and got two hotel rooms without booking (no self-catering units were available). Strangely my friend and I were asked to be quiet as international guests were booked in for the sardine run. We were lucky to get food before the restuarant closed at around 8pm. The rooms were small but adequately furnished however, it was difficult to move in the tiny shower-rooms. After turning in early to start tour first thing in the morning, I was rudely awaken at 10.30pm by the warring couple next door. At first I thought they were actually in my room but realised we were separated by plaster board! Hearing every Afrikaan word, but understanding nothing that was being said, I shouted that I could hear every word being said. After a peaceful moment, they couple resumed their argument. After the couple started pushing each other around I shouted that I had to be up early and demanded they stop arguing. Fortunately, after five minutes they stopped but I was woken extremely early when again, I thought someone had entered the room only to find it was the arguing couple rising. I complained to the member of staff that had checked us in. He did not apologise or offer a reduction other than to state that the hotel room walls are very thin and not suitable for more than one nights stay! So he clearly, did not find anything wrong with guests missing a nights sleep, despite paying R440 per night per person!

Room Tip: Ask for self-catering lodges near river and avoid the hotel rooms unless you like eaves dropping on...
