“Wow Mngazi week”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

We expected a lot based on what friends had told us, but we got lots and lots and even more! We were totally blown away by the friendly and professional staff, the meals, the beauty of the resort and its surroundings and the attention to our every need. The guided birding outing was one of the best we have been on. If only we had had another week, but that would not have been good for my figure! I feel the cold so could have been warmer in bed. night.

I had heard about Umngazi from friends and family who had been; they had all raved about it. I was looking for a holiday where we didn't have to worry about setting up camp, cooking, cleaning, packing etc etc. So we decided to give Umngazi a try... It was absolutely amazing, I just loved the place. It was quiet, peaceful, the kids had a ball, my husband and I could have a time out because of the fabulous nannies. I highly recommend Umngazi to anyone looking for a true break... it was such a pity to go home... but we will be back.

That recipe of a complete relax is so well honed, that it just happens. Back after a 10 yr gap and nothing has changed. You arrive, and the staff just take care of everything for you. Food is wholesome and good, and you just eat and eat. Walks are a must, and you should not miss out on the walks to sugarloaf, mangrove swamps, forest walks and then a trip up the river by canoe. Fishing is the ultimate relax with the sea milling around your feet and your gillie (local fishing experts) assisting you with advice. We were enormously privileged to have Anthony mountainbike with us. Anthony is busy building cycling tracks and we were honoured to experience some of them with him. If you are a first time visitor, do not try during school holidays. The drive in from Umtata is a tough haul with roadworks and population pressures, so once you are there you should stay at least 3-5 days otherwise you will miss out on some of the activities that will bring you back again.

Room Tip: River view rooms have a good view but the sea view rooms have more privacy

Dear Alastair,

Thank you so much for this wonderful review as well as letting me know where Anthony has got to, I was looking for him:)

It really was great to read that Umngazi is just as special now as it was on your last visit 10 years ago. The team really try and not change the winning formula that brings couples and family's back here year after year. The cycle tracks that Anthony is working on are becoming a great attraction for cyclists as well as runners and hikers alike, no excuse now not to burn off all that food.

We look forward to welcoming to back again soon, try not to wait another 10 years! Thank you so much for the support you give us.

Best wishes,

Graham

It's a drug I need at least once a year. One of the best places on the planet to clear your head. And then there's the food. Had to extend the stay because of a car incident in Port St. John's (beware of the mother-of-all speed bump) - didn't really care how long it took to fix the vehicle.

Dear Stephanie and David,

Thank you for taking the time to write this wonderful review, it was great to read that the accident with the Port St Johns speed hump did not spoil your stay with us. We really hope you can't shake this addiction, and look forward to welcoming you back for many years to come. Now that you know where the speed humps are it will be an easier drive.

Thank you so much for the support.

Stayed for 2 nights during May as we travelled from The Kruger down SA via PE to Cape Town. Narrow road from main road could be improved as there were some large pot holes and the bank had slipped away in 1 place. Our 2 night stay came as a welcome rest during a long drive!!. We arrived just in time for afternoon tea and cakes, this should have given us an idea that we were going to be eating plenty during the next 48 hours. The food was delicious. We went on the Sun Downer cruise and our guide brought along a bucket of fish. After about 20 mins he cut the engine and began whistling, an African Fish Eagle appeared and dropped into the river for one of the fish which he took into a nearby tree. Further up the river again the whistle but this time 2 eagles appeared. The guide was as excited as we were as the eagles had not been seen for some weeks following bad rain. A trip not to be missed. The rooms were very comfortable, the shower was rather unique with a wooden screen between you and the great outdoors. We entered into the pub quiz on both evenings didn't win but didn't disgrace ourselves either. We travelled with my husbands brother & his wife who live in SA and they definitely plan to return.

This was a triple 60th birthday celebration each with her own room but close to each other which was perfect. There was a theme to the event that the entire staff "bought into" and who went out of their way to ensure that every mad request was followed fully. some of us did everything on offer and all of us had the most amazing 4 days. Not for one moment did the staff lose interest in us. If there was a negative it was the windy windy road filled with livestock and dead dogs! Umngazi is simply the prefect location and I will return next year with my husband and our daughter, her husband (they are the ones who thought it was the place for me to do this all girl adventure) and our grandchildren.
