The best place we have been in many years. Food excellent, staff excellent and we like the fact that it is for the whole family also, so many things to do.

None of the other visitors that we talked to while we were there had any thing bad to so about you. All were very impressed. I have recommended Umngazi to everyone I have contact with since we are back!

I can not recommend this jewel of the Wild Coast highly enough. Umngazi is an old trading post that over it's history has developed into one of the finest resort locations on the eastern shores of South Africa. It is at the estuary mouth of the river which has flowed down from the Drakensburg Mountains. The 69 cottages are built on the sloping hill which runs alongside of the mouth of the river which runs parallel with the shoreline before entering the sea. The views across the river and the long silver sandbank spur and beyond over the sea are wonderfully picturesque and the gardens are densely and skillfully planted to create a small garden of Eden.

The cottages have nice interior decor without being over the top. The bathroom is nicely sized with an adjoining outside shower room behind timber stockades over which you can stare out to see as you are showering. Lovely. The rooms are clean. There is no TV in the rooms.

A wide choice of rooms, some with clear views and some not of the sea, some for families others for honeymooners (we took one of these which is set up high in a secluded position but with wonderful views down over the sea.)

The lounges, bar and restaurant (with outside terrace for open air dining are in a grouping beside the pool but easily accessed from the cottages, All are picturesquely thatch roofed and white rendered walls. Quite beautifully set out.

The pool is large and well used with areas for young children to safely play. There is lots of grass to lounge on around the pool and look out over the river. Lovely and restful apart from a couple of times when one very loud family who took over the pool as theirs and had no need of a megaphone to be heard by everybody "I am a crocodile roared the grandfather" to the delight of the screaming granchildren) We have been there twice and this fortunately was a one off as most of the guests, who were largely family groups, enjoyed the place in harmony with others. It seems to be very popular with South Africans with only a few Europeans, and they appear to return every year to celebrate with friends. very homely, friendly and comfortable feeling apart from the "Crocodile"

There is plenty to do, canoeing, boating up river to see Sea Eagles, hiking, horse riding along the beach, bicycle hire. However for swimming keep to pool as Wild Coast famous for its sharks.

There is also a spa.Nannies are available and there is so much for children to do.

The food is beautifully cooked and inclusive for Breakfast, Lunch and Evening Diner and is often self service so beware weight-watchers. The choice of South African wine was as extensive as it was good as it was well priced. We felt able to choose from the more expensive wines throughout our stay to our delight. One evening a week they serve local seafood.

For a special occasion book the private dining where you are served on the thatched timber framed jetty which sits over the water. Quite delightful.

Book early as it is very popular and some book for a year ahead as they are leaving (should I tell you this as this New Year we could not get rooms even 8 months ahead.)

Also this Hotel has to be congratulated on how much it gives to the local community. It has such a friendly atmosphere with service efficient and nice.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view.

Umngazi has been, and remains a firm favourite family destination. Management is always present, ready to serve, yet firmly professional. We love the allday tea/coffee/snack station, the generous meal offerings and feeling that you get more than what you pay for.

A wonderful relaxing holiday for all, kids, toddlers and mom and dad!
The food was excellent, activities for kids well thought out and executed and the rooms are tastefully and comfortably furnished. We didn't want for anything.
The road to the lodge is quite bad though so factor in more travel time or bring a 4x4.

The rooms are tired and in dire need of refurbishment. This is the third stay over the past 10 years and there has been no upgrading..In this day and age in room TV in our opinion is essential having travelled extensively. The service and food are excellent and cannot be faulted.
Overall a pleasant holiday experience for the young family but for an elderly retired couple like ourselves, well ????

Dear Umngazi Guest,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this kind review. I was happy to read that the service and kitchen teams impressed. You didn't seem to have noticed the major refurbishment we have done over the past 7 years as this has been extensive? With regards to TV we do offer TV's both in the lounge and the Pavilion (Children's) area, but not in the bungalows this is very much due to very little guest demand, we do hope it will stay this way.

Thank you for your support of Umngazi and that you will come through this way again oneday.

Best wishes,

Graham

Perfect place to rid yourself of stress, and the food was fantastic. Will go back for the anniversary.

Spa bath was a bit cool sometimes on account of their not being enough hot water.

Massage was a bit soft as well. But everything else was awesome.
