“Comfortable accommodation in lovely surroundings”

Five of us stayed in a self-contained Family Unit overlooking the swimming pool. It had a large lounge (with an extra bed if we had wanted it), one double bedroom and another bedroom with two single beds and a third bed built high above part of one of the other beds - grander than normal bunk beds. The bathroom had hot water some of the time.

We enjoyed meals on the open verandah outside the restaurant. There was a good menu with lots of choice and good food. We were always entertained by vervet and red-tailed monkeys, as well as lots of birds, some of them new to us.

One of our group was unwell. The owner quickly picked up on this and gave her complementary tea with honey - a thoughtful touch. We stayed an extra night until she was better and were the only people although it was quite busy at the weekend. However, the only noise at night was the amazing orchestra provided by three different types of frog in the large pond!

The hotel used to overlook the extensive Bujagali Falls. However, they have now disappeared under a vast 'lake' since the hydro-electric dam was built just downstream of the falls. But you can still see similar falls at Itanda if you drive about 15 miles further downstream.

We were a group of 3 who wanted to go to a nice peaceful place on the Nile for a reasonable price. We had heard of other places that had many kids and that there very noisy, we avoided those places, and opted for this Nile beauty.

The room was a triple room (tent 7), and it was spacious with a nice shower area, and a veranda with a hammock. The beds were comfortable, and we did not have any problems with insects. We rested comfortably.

We ate every meal at the Black Latern (the hotel restaurant), and the menu is simple, but has a lot of variety. For 3 days of meals, I never had the same meal twice. Each meal has generous portions, and there is enough for people to share if they are not too hungry.

The best part was the Ugandan staff. Beatrice and Judith were generally the two ladies who met us in the hotel reception and restaurant, and their smiles and helpful nature, made the stay special. I really felt cared for during our stay.

The place was clean. The pool was small, but nice. The bird life, and monkeys in the surrounding trees made for a relaxing atmosphere. Watching the local fishers on the Nile was beautiful.

Each time I go to Jinja, this is where I will stay.

Room Tip: All of the "tent" rooms have a good view of the Nile. The Family Bandas look over the poo...

Stayed one night in a Safari type tent/unit. It had partial walls and a roof, but had the feel of a safari tent with several layers of netting. It was situated up on the bank of the Nile and had a perfect view of the sunset (even from the shower). A nice combination of charm and character. Dinning in the Black Lantern was easy with a fine selection of local/western and indian and seem popular with tourist from other hotels for breakfast.

The unit had significant security, so safety seemed very important.

Room Tip: We had room no. 1 near the pool and the dinning room. It had a great view, but might be loud if it...

While in Uganda, few of us decided to take a trip to River Nile. We stayed in a family unit at The Nile Porch.
Its a beautiful place tucked inside by the river. Several species of monkeys, birds and ducks can be seen around. The stay was very comfortable as the unit was spacious and could accomodate 7-8 of us easily. The stay is at a height so one gets a beautiful view of the River in the evening. Its lush green so a lot of birds can be seen coming back to their nests.

The restaurant has some really good food and we completely enjoyed ourselves.

Room Tip: There are small tents right on the edge, looking over the river. Superb!

Unfortunately, like so many other lodges in the area, Nile Porch has not made the most of a great location and concept. The semi-tented bandas are a lovely concept--half concrete/permanent building and half open-air tent opening up onto a spectacular view of the Nile. The design is great so you can enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your bed. However, they have not maintained the tents and the other general facilities very well, and the whole place just feels rather outdated and run-down. The bedsheets had some permanent stains on them and needed to be replaced, same with some of the curtains. The sun loungers by the pool and the tables on the restaurant terrace all have chipped paint and look like they've seen better days.

On the bright side, they seem to have tried to take action to address some of the negative feedback in previous reviews. They have installed metal gates with padlocks in front of each tent to improve security. While this makes your belongings safer, it does also obstruct the view from the tent somewhat, so there is a tradeoff there. Also, I saw a previous reviewer say they paid $140 per person. We only paid $115 for the entire tent for 2 people, so $57 per person, making the tent much better value. However, $115 was just the B&B rate, not full board. The hot water in our tent worked fine during our stay.

The Black Lantern restaurant was pretty good. Their famous pork ribs are a special treat you don't normally find in Uganda. Also, their service is fast and attentive.

Proximity to NRE and the ATVs was a definite plus so it was easy to walk next door for activities. However, there is also a bar nearby that plays loud music until late in the night so that might disturb some people from sleeping.

For the price, the experience is ok, but there are nicer places to stay in the area for better value.

Room Tip: For a more secluded/romantic experience, ask for a tent further away from the pool (so not tent 1).

Dangerous and scary experience!! While the setting is pretty , our experience there was horrifying! The beauty of the location lulls you into a sense of safety, however my antannae went up immediately when I saw there was no way to secure our things in the tent/banta we were assigned. The accomadations were minimal for the expensive price tag, very bare and minimal. We were assured that we were perfectly safe as there are 2 guards on duty at all times with what looked like machine guns. (However I have to say the guards themselves made me nervous). We were the only ones on the property that evening, and we were robbed blind in the middle of the night. The scarey thing is that the thieves came into our tent when we were sleeping and were only 10 ft away from us. All our possessions were stolen, but thank god not our lives. The thought of it all is unbearable and what could have happened. When we reported the incident the manager and owner, they acted horribly disinterested, and looked at us with blank stares. The owner of the place told us there is nothing he can do and people are robbed there all the time!!! REALLY!!! Obviously if the security guards with machine guns couldn't take care of 2 people in one banta....it makes you wonder what's really going on. Scarey scarey experience. If you stay here you are taking your life in your hands. I hope the Ugandan police break up what seems to be a criminal gang as it seems there may be a real scam going on. This place is dangerous. No joke. My boyfriend and I are successful professionals and in our 40's. Our work takes us all over the world and we have visited many countries on numerous continents. We have never experienced anything like this before and pray to god we never do again! There are good alternatives in the area. I suggest you research options carefully.

This is a tough one to review because the setting is amazing. Your only options in this area, overlooking the Nile are backpackers and this place. We needed to get away from drunk and vomiting 20 year olds so we chose the Nile Porch. Safari Tent style accommodations were perfect. Private setting for each. However, the price was $140 per person and didn't include breakfast, coffee or even bottles of water. Staff seemed more interested in sleeping in the lobby and the was NO HOT WATER. I'm sorry, I've stayed in a lot of janky places but when I spend that much money for a nights stay, don't you think you should have hot water. They need to wake up and realize that there place isn't worth what they're charging. Should be $80-$90 per night. Next time we'll choose a private room at one of the backpackers.
