I travelled here to stay for 1 night with two friends as a break from volunteering in Kampala, we originally book a four bed dorm but chose to upgrade to a double room at the last minute, the dorms were fine but for the sake of £2 extra each we could lock our room and sleep in a double bed for the night and have a little balcony to sit out on...the room also had a bunk so actually sleeps 4 people! Tha bathrooms are clean and have powerful HOT showers...much needed after washing in cold water for nearly a week previously! The view from the bar is amazing and we enjoyed a few drinks and some food whilst watching the sunset. We explored our way down to the 'swimming jetty' and swam in the Nile and no harm came to us, we also met a few guys down there (whilst dropping some people off) who ran a boat cruise for $15pp with beer included, try and arrange something like this rather than pay $45 when booked via the hostel itself! We also hired kayaks from the hostel at $20 ph which was really good fun. Would definitely recommend staying a few nights here, good accom, food atmosphere and plenty of things to do :)

Hi Emma L,

Thanks for the review - we are please you enjoyed your stay at Explorers River Camp.

We appreciate that you saved some money by taking a cruise on a local boat but we feel that the two cruises are not really compatible. If there are only two of you, then a small boat is probably your best option, but the 'Nile Explorer' is a two storey pontoon boat that takes up to 40 people and a great way to meet fellow travellers. The $45 is inclusive of food and drinks and is discounted to $25 if you book a raft cruise combo.

Cheers
Leslie

after being down in the other explorers backpackers nearer to town - this place with the view and set up is truly stunning.

free transport about 1 or 2pm from explorers in jinga is perfect for making the journey up here - or pay 5000 sh on a boda - it is quiet far and the road/track can be bumpy in places.

the accommodation available is mixed.

we treated ourselves to a safari tent with a view. a twin bed set up, 2 chairs, and a table it faces the water. stunning.

no nets, but mozzie coils, padlock box chained under the bed and padlock for the tent meant I was not consider about theft - but a safe is available in reception.

the steps down the water and a swimming dock are easy to navigate. the themed showers are fab if not cold with view direct to the water - this does means that waist and above are also viewed from the water ;) so be careful!

food and beer are available at the restaurant or a rolex opposite the gate. The quad bikes are 2 minutes walk out of the gate and left.

fab location.
lovely staff
quiet mid week
may be a party place at the weekends with teachers and NGO staff but Sunday night was quiet.

Stunning and having been in town too - would prefer to be up the hill here.

Discount if you raft. Transport to rafting from here at 0830. Transport to Kampala if you raft too.

Lovely lasses on reception when we checked and out :)

Room Tip: Dorms at the back, with bathroom (consistently cleaned and restocked) next to them. Tents down the...

Tented accommodation with the Nile as your backdrop, this should be enough but add in cold beers, good food and a convivial atmosphere then this is the spot to unwind in Jinja. Great set up, only reason that it lacks it's 5th star is that although getting your laundry done here is really cheap, your clothes may not come back dry!

Good internet and range of accommodation options on offer. Hot communal showers & complimentary hairdryer.

Room Tip: Def upgrade to tents overlooking the Nile, away from the noise (but also the facilities)

Hi Cider_with_rosie,

Glad you enjoyed your stay with us, and we agree there is nothing better than a cold beer overlooking the Nile.

Sorry about the washing - unfortunately the weather is not under our control.

I stayed here a few times during my stay in Uganda and every time it was fantastic. The view from the dining/bar area is incredible (even if the fall are now submerged). I would really recommend the safari tents and they are incredible value for money compared to what other places across the country charge for the same experience. The bathrooms are kept incredibly clean (I'm sure they clean them about 3 times a day!) and the staff are lovely.

If you're worried about the noise ask to stay in one of the safari tents further down the hill-I couldn't hear the music even when I went to bed early and it was on full.

It is a lovely place to relax with a Nile special or one of their famous yoghurt smoothies watching the world go by and relaxing. You don't have to go by boda boda there are minibus taxis from the roundabout at fang fangs (I think that's what it's called- the chinese restaurant on the jinja kampala road), or it is really easy to hitch a lift the short distance with all the muzungus whizzing up and down.

This place is gorgeous, hard to get to but worth the journey on the boda boda. We didn't do rafting so had to make our own way there but it did mean we got to enjoy the views with no one else around. They were very helpful in organising kayaking for us..it's all on site so really easy and also cheap..$20 an hour. The monkeys are everywhere and great fun to watch too.
The view from the bar was incredible and worth the trip to Jinja. The food was also cheap and very tasty. The tent was large and comfortable although a real hassle to get in and out of with zips, locks and velcro (Useful for keeping out mosquito's though). It was a good treck to the toilet block but the toilets were nice and clean. The shower with a view was amazing and the water even warm.
The only down side was that we didn't sleep much at all, music was still going after 11 as we went to bed, not a problem as I'd been warned from other reviews about this. But the loud music kept going till at least half 4!! Thankfully we didn't have to get up for anything the next day and had a lazy morning enjoying more of the view. The staff were not the friendliest but all in all a nice stay.

Room Tip: Safari tents have a great view but probably not worth the extra money as you get a better view from...

Hi beckst1989,
Thanks for taking the time to write a review and we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Explorers River Camp - apart of course from the lack of sleep - sorry for that. Our bar staff are under strict instructions to turn the music down at 11:00 pm, turn it off at 12:00 and the bar must be completely closed by 01:00 at the latest. Unfortunately we do not have the same control over our neighbors, their operating hours or the volume of their music which can quite often be mistaken for originating from our bar.
Cheers

This place is great. The rooms, beds, and sheets are all clean. The showers are warm (not necessarily hot). The view from the back patio is magnificent. The Nile is great. They have a kayak rental place and you can get a double kayak for $20/hour. It's so peaceful and relaxing. They also have a bar/restaurant with reasonably priced food and beverages. The bar gets a little noisy at night, especially on the weekends.

Well set up, expansive lakeside location with all sorts of accommodation options to suit every budget to mid need. Great adventure options centered around the Nile river - white water rafting, jet boating etc. yet much quieter than Vic falls which is a turnstile for tourists.

Management keep it in great shape - Jaques and crew are great company and well versed in African travel with years of over landing and the like under his belt.

Highly recommended.
