“good hotel”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

from outside the hotel does not look exclusive, but you must enter in order to understand the intention of the designer.
Perfect hotel and good food. Dinners are buffet style, lot of choice, tasty, fresh prepared food. Rooms very clean, nicely designed. Brela is top destination.
Hotel staff is excellent.

Brela and hotel Soline is one of my best Croatian experience.

Cons: Brela is one of more expensive croatian destination, but cca 3€ for 0,3l bottle of local beer or 0,25 cola in 3star croatian hotel......it suprised me.

After having our reservation lost by an apartment owner on an island 3 hrs away, were left scrambling to find a room for three more days. We worked the phones and internet all night before coming across this amazing hotel. We just needed a nice clean room so we booked a regular room with no view. We were an 1hr drive away, and it was only 9am. The central reservation desk said they would try their hardest to have our room ready, 4 hrs before the normal check in time, which they did.
The people behind the desk noticed how tired and grumpy we were, (this after being up all night looking for a place to stay and riding a 3 hr ferry back to main land and then walking around looking for a rental car), and asked if everything was ok. I explained to them what had just happened to us. Without even letting my finish the story, one lady whispered something into the ear of the other person. They didn’t even complete our check in and literally pushed us into the elevator, leaving our bags behind. They turned our ‘no view’ room into a ‘sea view’ room at no extra cost, and believe it cost a lot more.
As I was not expecting to stay in a hotel this trip, I had some items that had to be kept in a refrigerator. As the bar fridge in the room was too small, the man who helped us didnt even think twice about offering to store it in the hotel's fridge for me. The best beaches are literally steps away, as are some amazing restaurants. As a Canadian born Croat with lots of family 15 minutes away, I will only stay at this hotel from now on when im in the area. Even if it wasn’t for the service, this is one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in.
John Z

Room Tip: A sea view room will make all the difference. Trust me.

The good: Great, big breakfast, nice pool. Nicely-designed, modern room with good air conditioning. Friendly, helpful staff. Central location with a nice view. The terrace was nicely private, you could not see terraces belong to the guests. The not-good: The Wi-Fi only worked when the terrace doors were open. There were complicated passwords for each device. The beds were much too soft, and the twin beds split apart too easily. The mini bar was full of products for sale and there was a warning that nothing could be removed without incurring a charge. The two elevators were very small, not enough capacity for the volume of guest and were only on one end of the very large hotel. The hotel was very family-oriented. There were many children at the pool and at the evening entertainment. Brela, in general, appears to attract families. Overall, we had a relaxing time during our stay. But at this price level, there were too many discomforts and other issues that had to be accommodated. At a lower price-point, I would be more understanding.

Dear Brewsta,

First, we would like to thank you for sharing your positive experience and for posting your review. We appreciate you being open and direct about the wi-fi, we would like to inform you that we are working on improving the strength and extending the reach of the Bluesun Wi-Fi network. In regard to the children, this is a time when families with children usually decide to vacation and stay at the hotel, July and September however are much quieter and relaxing. Nontheless, we are joyful to hear that this did not have a major affect on your overall vacation.

We hope to see you again.

Perfect place to relax for a week (50m to several very very beautiful beaches, newly renovated and absolutely clean rooms, top serice, nice town nearby, supermarket close by, ....). Only the breakfast was only of average quality. But otherwise it can absolutly be recommended.

We stayed at this hotel with our daugther of one year and a half for one week. We did not regret it at all!!! Tirst of all the staff of the hotel was extremely friendly and immediately responded to all our wishes. They were even so nice that every afternoon they prepared a free meal for our baby daugther so we did not had to care ourselves which was very helpfull!!! Moreover the rooms are very nice, big and confortable so we had place enough to put all our things. Also the hotel is just at a couple minutes of walking distance of the beach and offers moreover a welnesps, inside and outside swimming pool. Also the breakfast and dinner were very nice. This ia a place where we definitely go back as we had wonderfull vacation thanks to the hotel staff and the hotel accomodation. I have no hesitation to recommend this place as a five star destination!!!

Room Tip: Take a superior room with sea view. It is the best kind of room and you can enjoy sun on your terrac...

We stayed here for our honeymoon from 24/5/14 for 11 nights.. and wow were we glad we chose to come here! It really was the holiday of a lifetime for us and we created many memories that will last a lifetime.

You get a sense of what the holiday will be like on the drive from the airport, along the coastal road as you enter the Makarska Riviera high up the mountain with the views down to the sea and the many pretty villages below.

There are many little villages along the coast down to Makarska town itself but I would say Brela is the prettiest! It is an amazing place, and is a real 'back to nature', unspoilt place, as it should be. There are no brash bars or drunkards spilling out of nightclubs... it is simple pine trees from the top of the mountains right down to the sea, and 8 miles of beautiful promenade to walk along, with crystal clear waters and beach after beach of which they are all beautiful and we almost had most of them to ourselves! The water in the sea is completely clear and even just paddling knee deep in the water there are dozens of small beautiful fish swimming around you.

I heard that Punta Rata beach just a five minute walk along the promenade has been rated the nicest in Europe - and I would say deservedly so. I should mention that all beaches are pebble beaches so sturdy flip flops are necessary.

It is a very very laid back lifestyle... there are no restrictions on beaches, people leave their bikes unlocked, the people on the market stalls don't try and sell you things... you are respected as a visitor! The people are very friendly.. and as typical English people who don't speak any language other than English, the locals put us to shame as they can all speak Croatian, German, Swiss, English all very fluently! At the time we stayed I would say there was only us and maybe one or two other English speaking couples we heard staying in the whole village, but this being our honeymoon gave us a pleasant sense of being in our own little world.

The weather - we went last week in May/first week in June, and there were a couple of days where it went close to 30 degrees, but was mostly 24-26 degrees, which as far as I'm concerned is hot enough for us! Apparently in July/August it can reach 40 degrees which for me is way too hot and it can get very very busy in these months.

The beauty of this place is that the holiday can be what you make it. You can relax on any beach and sunbathe all day - or there are many excursions to go on, or nearby towns/villages to explore. I can recommend all of the following trips which we went on... the Fish Picnic is a superb full day out, great value for money, although book it from the nice lady outside the supermarket as it is a little bit cheaper than in the hotel! It calls to two islands, and Bol is an amazingly beautiful place (definitely go see the Zlatni Rat beach). We also went on the Trogir/Split excursion which we booked with hotel reception, and the sights we saw on this are amazing (Roman palaces in Split, amazing shops, a great full day out and an excellent English speaking tour guide). Worth every penny! We also went on the glass bottomed boat ride which was amazing - you could see literally thousands of fish in the shallow clear waters!

Also one morning we took a taxi to the nearest large town of Makarska (£17 taxi fare for twelve miles) which was well worth it. The town has two main seafronts, where the boats are on one half, and then a walk through a pleasant market leads you to the other half where the beaches are. We found the local bus station easily to get a local bus back to the hotel (£1.20 fare!!), the reason we took a taxi there is the very steep climb to the main coastal road where the bus stop is - but getting a bus back is fine, the downhill walk is very easy! The local bus service is very good and if we were to return we would use it to go to Split, Omis and exploring other places along the way.

Being our honeymoon we treated ourselves to a spa day in the hotel. We had an "Aquaroma Luxury Massage for Couples" which was £85 for us both for 90 minutes (using a discount voucher you are given on arrival) - and worth every penny! We also went into the spa itself, trying the different saunas and jacuzzis which are of a very very high standard - and very quiet, we had the whole place to ourselves! The hotel swimming pool is free to use and has nice sunbeds, and there were always plenty available while we were there at any time of day (again an adavantage of going at a quiet time of year!). The pool area and pool itself is beautiful, when you see photos online they don't do it justice it is much nicer in real life. There is also a 'hidden cave' you can swim in with a secret jacuzzi inside!

With regards to food, we were half board, which didn't cost much more than bed and breakfast. The breakfasts were delicious - no issues at all. Everything made fresh and on a self serve buffet, regularly replenished. Bacon, German sausages, eggs how you like them (fried, scrambled, boiled etc), choice of bread, meats, cheeses, cereals, fresh fruit, salads, pastries, croissants, plus teas/coffees/fruit juices just help yourself. One point to mention is that they aren't big tea drinkers in Croatia like we are in England, they much prefer coffee, and when you're out and about most menus don't have tea on them!

The food served at dinner was delicious and fresh. I notice a previous reviewer on here said the food choices were repeated - this is no longer true as in 11 nights here the buffet menu didn't repeat itself once at all. The main options are always fish based as the fish is very fresh here, you see many local restaurants taking in daily deliveries of whichever fish they have caught that day! There are always many meat choices too. We were apprehensive about the food before going as my wife is vegetarian but there were always 2 or 3 choices for her every night. The only thing I would say about the food is that while the food itself didn't repeat itself, the process of having self-serve food every night became slightly monotonous after a few nights so we had a few meals out in local restaurants to enjoy a change of scenery and to be 'served' food. One improvement I would suggest for the hotel is to allow guests staying half board for 1 week or longer, is to allow them a meal in the Punta Rata restaurant which Blue Sun also own maybe?

The local restaurants are all superb - we dined in the one just after the supermarket on the left. Prices are excellent value, similarly priced to UK or slightly less. (£14 for steak, £6 for veggie lasagne, £2.50 pint of local lager Osujsko which is very refreshing and crisp!). Soft drink prices in bars are around the same price as lager, or coffee is only £1-£1.50. Pizzas are absolutely delicious - as good as Italy (the olive oil is locally made here and is very good) - and you can have any pizza you want for £4-£5. Also nothing beats the ice cream here on a hot afternoon - all sold by the scoop at 80p per scoop with many flavours. For relaxing beach cocktails the bar just after the harbour is amazing.

The service in the hotel throughout was always excellent - very professional staff on reception and in the restaurant, spa, and cleaning staff. The resort (and country!!) is exceptionally clean - the hotel cleaners even go out and sweep and wash the road outside at 6.30am every day!!!

With regards to the hotel building itself, some reviewers on here have said they dislike it. I guess it is like marmite - you love it or hate it. I personally absolutely loved the style of the hotel, built in the 1960's and is a very modernist style with concrete, wood and glass being strong focal points, and it respects the nature - it is built around the trees, allowances have been made for the trees rather than cut them down! The rooms themselves are modern, clean, and nicer than the online photos suggest. Wooden parquet flooring, sliding glass doors onto a wooden balcony with a glass wall overlooking the sea/mountains - absolutely beautiful. The bathroom was nice, with a bath and separate shower a nice feature.

The entertainment on a night was good - again in an amazing location right next to the water at the front of the hotel. There was a live band on 5 nights a week mostly playing relaxing pop music, or one night a week Croatian folk music. The other two nights (Sundays and Tuesdays) the entertainment team put shows on with quizzes, games, prizes and invited professional acts on which while we were there included a fire eating show and some circus performers who did an amazing acrobatic show hanging from the trees in the moonlight! Also on another night we were treated to a good firework display from a different hotel just across the bay.

One thing we would feedback to the hotel is that dinner is served 7-9pm and entertainment is 9-11pm, but we would regularly go to dinner at 7pm leaving a big gap until the entertainment starts, if it started at 8pm you could walk straight out down the steps from the dining room.

When planning our budget we allowed £100 per day spending money, and we did everything we wanted to (excursions, eating out, souvenir shopping etc) without a second thought - and in actuality we spent around £90 a day.

We didn't want to come home - we loved the lifestyle, the people, the high standards, the country, the views, the nature, the food, everyone looks after you very well. We hope to return here - it will take us a few years for us to save up to come back but we will do it!! We spotted many places we didn't get time to go to but would love to go next time (sailing up the river canyon at Omis - just a bus ride away, seeing the lakes at Krka national park or spending a day in Dubrovnik).

Many thanks to all the staff at the hotel - it was an amazing trip which we will remember forever and we hope to return one day!

Mark & Chloe
