We use to go to this restaurant 1-2 times each week for lunch. Over the last couple months it's changed.....the sushi use to be fresh now it's old and smells bad....the last straw for me was getting sick from what suspect was spoiled sushi.

I went to kawa in a Friday night. After waiting 5 minutes to be greeted at the door a women told is we could sit at a table in the back, when we said we would wait for her to bus one of the many dirty booths, as we prefer a booth over a table, she said ok and walked away. Another 5 minutes we found ourselves standing in the same place, listening to tables talking back and forth about how slow the service had been. We had a coupon so we decided to try it despite the chatter and made our way back to the table ( the booth was never cleared for us). We told the waitress we would just sit at the table and and she said ok. Exactly 18 minutes passed after we sat and no one came to us. We stopped a sever 3 different times and each time she said she would be right there. After almost a half hour since we entered the door and not even having a drink or even a server- we left for another sushi bar down the street.

The sushi and sashimi at Kawa is outstanding - and the portions are very generous (enough for mucho take-home). They seem to have the widest selection of sushi rolls around - about 20 in all - and everything tastes great. The "volcano" is not to be missed!

It looks like they have overcome their "growing pains" and we strongly suggest trying them out - a great place for a quiet business lunch or romantic evening! Still no alcohol, but you can bring your own spirits and save. (We enjoyed wine with our meals, and the glasses were cheerfully provided).

Tucked away next to Aldi's in Hiawatha Plaza is not the best location in the world, but they have done a great job standing out with two other restaurants nearby. Now, you have the choice of Japanese, Thai or Italian fare within a few hundred feet. You can park (free parking) and then decide.

From our experience, you will get the best value at Kawa. They serve excellent dinners and sushi - but you will need to quietly bring your own alcoholic beverages, 'cause they don't have their liquor license. That doesn't bother us - in fact it's a great plus!

Eat at the table or the sushi bar - and enjoy!

We went to Kawa shortly after they opened in May 2013. It was so new that you could still smell the scent from the construction that had been done, but nothing too serious. It was early so there was only one other table of people being served. The sushi was excellent. We had a coupon that they were running for their special for just opening so our bill was great. As with any sushi, it can be expensive depending on what and how much you order. Very good though!
