“Great beds, thin walls”
Reviewed 3 April 2014

Front desk experience was A+ and the rooms were very clean. The staff was excellent and eager to assist us. The shuttle service was fantastic. The bed was amazing.

The walls are so thin we could hear everyone's hallway conversations and elevator activity perfectly. The toilet is awkward. The elevator makes groaning and snapping noises. The tube that came out of the lobby wine bottle was slimy.

We are likely to return if we are in the area again. The shuttle service and the staff (and that bed) are all enough to recommend it to family and friends.

Minuses: Rude front desk staff at night time (both nights). The wine dispenser in the lounge suffers from lack of maintenance. After 3 attempts to get a glass of wine failed because the bottles were not sufficiently full, a staff member offered to help by taking a bottle out of the dispenser and pouring a glass. Along with the wine, a slimy sludge from the dispenser's tubing filled my glass. It apparently hadn't been cleaned for some time. The hotel does not offer free wi-fi but does have wi-fi for a fee, which is really cheesy for a 4 star property. The rooms are showing wear and tear (less than clean furnishings, scuffed/scratched flooring and tables) and some things weren't done right to begin with (poor tiling job in bathroom). There is basically nothing close to this hotel; that wouldn't be so bad if the quality of service and accommodation make it worth the trouble.

Pluses: comfortable bed, free shuttle takes you pretty much anywhere in LIC, room was clean, nice bath products, decent view of Manhattan.

We loved the Ravel Hotel. Not far away from subway station (ca. 10 min walking but they provide shuttle service too) upon arrival we were upgraded to king size bed room on the last floor facing manhattan without extra charges: the view from there was breathtaking! The room itself is spacious, nicely furnished, clean and comfortable. Free coffee is available, in the lobby as well. The staff is young, nice and helpful. The restaurant on the rooftop looked also very nice but we didn't try the food. The are constructions around the hotel because they are expanding but we weren't bothered at all. On check-out day the shuttle took us directly to the subway station we needed to reach the JFK airport. Only one downside: no free internet in the rooms. Otherwise perfect for New York.

Room Tip: If possible try to contact the hotel to specifically reserve a room on the 5th floor facing manhatta...

We booked this hotel because we wanted a view of manhattan and save a few dollars . We got a room underneath the rooftop restaurant , with an amazing view of the city , room was upgraded no charge at check in. Staff were fantastic , free shuttle to subway , lemon water in lobby , beautiful spacious room..... We saved money , taking the subway into new york was fun and easy , would stay there again and would recommend it to anyone who wants to see new york and experience a great hotel at a reasonable price.

Room Tip: Ask for highest floor possible facing Manhattan.

I booked through expedia and I was expecting a simple written room. However, upon check in I was informed that I had been given a promotional-um free-upgrade. I had two beds and a balcony now.love the bathroom and the lemon water in the lobby is a plus!!

High on pretension, half-assed in practice. Flight delays caused me and my partner to arrive at the hotel near midnight where we were greeted by a mildly surly woman at the desk. Given our key cards, we proceeded to the room and nearly settled in before we found that the television didn't work. It was plugged in, the remote appeared to work but the TV would not turn on even via it's own power button.

We returned to the desk and were offered a different room and were told that we would be called in the morning to be changed back to our old room. She made it very clear that we shouldn't expect to stay in our new room - jerk. Thankfully, this did not happen and they allowed us to remain in our new room, which happened to be much, much larger, a plus, to be sure.

The Ravel is trying very hard to be an arty boutique hotel. It boasts a great rooftop bar and major fancy-pants renovations on the way. In my opinion, they should fix their existing problems first.

The hotel's styling is modern and spare, with so-so art on the walls which are in various states of disrepair. The amount of cosmetic problems and construction issues however, make all it's pretensions a joke.
Here's a list:

1. The raised bathroom floor was not finished properly at the threshold leaving a large lip on
which my partner stubbed his toe so severely it was cut.

2. The transparent glass shower stall is situated in such a way that you get drenched when you
turn the shower on. The faucet fixture is pointed directly at the door you need to open to get
in.

3. A recessed light in the bathroom, directly over the shower, was falling out of the wall and
hanging by it's wires

4. One bedside table lamp was completely dysfunctional

5. Every piece of furniture was chipped and scraped

6. Warm and dark colored walls were chipped, exposing white drywall

7. No instructions included to access paid internet service - you have to call the desk (why?)

8. Paid internet service ($5.00 1/2 hour or $9.99/day) took an inordinate amount of time to sign
up for. I couldn't get to the payment screen before it timed out. I called the desk and they
offered the free wifi in the lobby as a solution. When that didn't satisfy me, they sent a hotel
employee up who tried the exact same things I did for 10 minutes until it finally worked -
ridiculous.

9. Lobby - wallpaper is peeling from the walls, hanging lamps are filthy and bar chairs are
coming apart

10. The rooftop bar offers a great view but don't expect service to match. Items listed on the
menu were not available. When asked if they had any cider the bartender said 'no' even
though, it was sitting on an exposed shelf right in front of him. He never asked if I wanted a
second drink and had no idea what a maraschino cherry was. Incidentally, the bar was
completely empty at the time.

This place is a joke
