I've been to Walter's many times. It's a quaint little place, a National Historic Landmark (founded in 1919). Worth a visit, if only for that reason.

Pros:

1. The hot dogs are delicious. They slice them down the middle and brown them on a hot griddle which brings out the flavor and eliminates the wet feel that so many dogs suffer from.
2. They offer a nice selection of classic milk bar drinks: shakes, floats, thick shakes and the like, all made with their homemade ice-cream.
3. They go above and beyond on the fries, offering, in addition to shoestring and curly, tater tots and sweet potato spuds.
4. They offer outdoor seating in the shade and away from the street.

Cons:

1. They are so slow! They even have a sign that says "Walter's hot dogs: Worth their wait in gold." That ought to tell you something... If I see more than 2-3 people in line I just keep driving--I've learned my lesson. The longest lines are usually between 12:30 and 2:30, so go early or go late. By early I mean 11:00 or so. They are open from about that time until early evening, 5:00 or so.

2. They offer only 2 things to go on the hot dogs: ketchup and their signature Walter's mustard, so if you are a fixings fan you will be disappointed. The mustard is good, but does not outshine all others. It's just a mild creamy one mixed with finely minced relish of indeterminable flavor.

All in all, however, it is a great little lunch place, especially for the lazy days of summer.

hot dogs, fries all done exceptionally well. There is a good reason why this place is always rated in the top hot dog and summer experience lists- the food is consistently well done. The lines can be long but they move quickly enough. Make sure to check the hours before you go- they are not open late.

We keep coming back! My grandma and I love to take the ride up during lunch. Best hotdogs around and it doesn't hurt that everything else is good too! We go at lead 3 times a month during the summer.

One of the world's best places for a hot dog and not overpriced. I normally gripe about prices. You have to wait outdoors so if you go, do so in nice weather.
