“What's all the hype?”
Reviewed 30 July 2014 via mobile

As frequent visitors to MTK, we hear a lot about is The Surf Lodge, so decided to check it out for pre-dinner drinks on a Tuesdsy evening.
The bar is expensive with a below average selection of drinks.
The outdoor bar area is set up with cute little sections comprised of various seating arrangements. Yes, it's cute to "sit on a beach for drinks" ...But honestly the sand dirty and it felt like cat litter. We were also being eaten alive by bugs.

Ok, I can check it off my list, but I really wouldn't go back.

“Beautiful setting, fun decor and good food”
Reviewed 28 July 2014 via mobile

We had a late lunch so it was quiet and we had proper service. Despite all reviews I have read we had a super experience. The food was excellent and atmosfer great. Service was sufficient but I can imagine the vertu moment pressure builds service drops. For us: definitively a must go.

“Really fun place on a Wednesday”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

Great band fronted by a female singer with fun personality. Accommodating host for our large party. Good fried soft shell crab and whole fish. I was not impressed by the lobster roll. Good drinks.

“Very rude management- sets the standard for their staff”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

I get it- there aren't many places to go out at night and party in Montauk... it's just really a shame that this place is owned by someone horribly rude. The management sets the tone for how their staff treats customers.. and unfortunately, that tone seems to be that they don't care one way or another if you are there (let alone, happy). We had heard that if you don't get there by 7pm, you won't get in.. but after dinner elsewhere, we didn't get there until close to 9. When we arrived, there was a line and no one was too sure what was going on so someone pushed to the front to find out if we had to put the size of our party in... after realizing that we were just part of a large group of people who all had no idea what was going on other than we were all standing outside of the same bar/restaurant/hotel, someone from the staff announced that they "could not" let in anyone else until 55 people inside were to leave. No one who works there offered any additional information or acknowledgement that there were people waiting... so someone from our group went up to to the reservation hostess and asked how to make a reservation. She was basically ignored and told that it would be impossible. She tried to talk to the bouncer a bit, and while she was doing that- a group of 3 girls marched right up to the reservation host, said that they were in earlier for dinner at 5 and wanted to go back in and they were allowed right through. The same person from our group continued to talk to the bouncer and then came back to us to tell us that he would help get us in. As we all found out quickly after getting in, she paid him off to let us in- and not only that.. after letting in half our group- he actually demanded more money before letting in the rest. It was the sleaziest practice I had ever seen. But apparently that's word to the wise- doesn't matter what time you get there if you have enough cash for the bouncer. Not only that- but we all just walked right in without anyone being ID'd (and there are definitely people in our group that while they are well over 21, do not at all look it). Once in, we saw that the inside bar felt like a beach bar, surfboards, weathered wood,etc... the dining areas looked interesting and were packed with people... we went out to the back where there is a large patio, outdoor bar and beach with fireplaces and outdoor couches. The drinks were incredibly expensive (way more so than anywhere else in Montauk) and while the beach part was nice, it was so crowded it was hard to move anywhere. We had more run-ins with the the horrible staff as we walked down the 3 steps to the beach and security came and actually yelled at us to clear the steps... we were doing just that, but actively walking down them. We made our way over to the fire pit areas and without there being signs or staff there, we moved around to different seats as they opened. A member of security came over to our party girl and told her that she must remove any paraphernalia of it being a party because the owner watches from a camera inside and does not approve of those sorts of display. This was not a party girl dancing on a bar... she was sitting on a couch surrounded by friends. She removed any notion of a celebration and went on with the evening.. for about 20 minutes until the manager herself came down and demanded that our group vacate the couch we were sitting on. Unfortunately, she only told one part of group that was on one couch, so we left... but when the other group did not get up she sternly approached and demanded they leave as well. We stood around for a bit and found out that we got in the most inexpensive way possible... those couches were "bought" by people paying $1,000 to get in. Absolutely absurd. It was just an obvious feeling that the management and staff wanted money to come in and they could care less that the reason they had money coming in is because human beings patronized their establishment. It was an awful feeling of disgust and if I wasn't with a group of friends, I'd have left immediately. Eventually we did leave and had more fun hanging out at our hotel. I'm mostly disappointed that due to the lack of alternatives in Montauk, this manager will continue to be in business and make money.
