“Oceanfront dream getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2008

The oceanfront one bedroom duplex we stayed in was excellent. Both floors, living room and bedroom have magnificent ocean views. There are only a few feet of dunes between the outdoor deck and the actual beach.

The deck is larger than your usual hotel/motel's and offers privacy from adjoining decks but still provides a great opening to the ocean.
The bedroom's ocean view from upstairs in magnificent. You can hear the ocean and see the stars from your bed at hight - about as dreamy and relaxing as it gets for a New York getaway.

The place was clean, with a very nice bathroom, good efficiency kitchen, a lot of storage space and closets, and the decor was very nice and simple - not the usual gaudy motel stuff - definitely one step above.

We stayed at the Surf Club first week of May and arrived on a Sunday so it was still off season and the weekenders were already gone too. We were the only ones there and had the beach and gym all to ourselves. Together with the feel and ocean views of the two story duplex we felt like we had our own beach house.

The Surf Club is also located centrally - so you can walk to stores and some great restaurants (Harvest has great food and fantastic water views - go around sunset for an amazing experience). The beach is clean and so is the clear, blue water and they're both literally outside your window.

In addition there's so much to do in Montauk and it's a really easy drive from NYC (2 hrs). I used to go to Fire Island, but this is my new favorite place.

The only thing I disliked is that they don't take credit card reservations and want full payment by check prior to arrival - but all places in Montauk do it that way.

I highly recommend Surf Club, it's an amazing, very relaxing getaway.

We recently stayed at the Surf Club in April 2008. I have been going to Montauk for over thirty years and my family has a place there. This week we wanted alone time and booked our stay here. We also stayed here in the fall. Our accommodation was a two bedroom ocean view. The views are beautiful. This is what you are paying for. It is one of the nicest places to stay in Montauk. There is also a gym with great equipment, pool and access to your own private beach. My only complaint is the beds! Very uncomfortable!!!! This room we stayed in goes as high as $815/night in August. And I would think for that money you should have the comfort of a Ritz Carlton bed or at least a Hilton. Not going to happen. The queen size bed in the bedroom downstairs was horrendous and when I checked under it before leaving, I saw that the mattress was practically on the floor. The two beds in the upstairs loft were equally as uncomfortable. I have stayed in unit #18 and #16 in the past six months. Would I stay here again, the question is actually could I. The beds are so bad I don't know. My back and hips hurt for days after our stay. In addition the couch was broken in unit #18.

My husband and I were looking for a place to stay that was a bit roomier than a hotel room for our weeklong vacation in Montauk this year, and we were REALLY pleased with our choice of the Surf Club. We thought about renting a private cottage, but couldn't find anything so close to the ocean, and with a pool so we settled on a condo at the Surf Club.

We stayed in a one bedroom poolside condo. We wanted to get an Oceanview room, but ultimately decided against it due to the much higher cost. We were not disappointed - you are steps from the ocean no matter which condo you rent. Next time we may even choose a cheaper unit. Our bathroom was all marble and the toiletries provided were very nice. The kitchen is really small but was more than adequate for our needs as we weren't cooking gourmet meals in our unit. In addition to a fridge, stove and dishwasher, the kitchen came with a toaster, coffeemaker and small microwave.

The property provides beach umbrellas, chairs and towels that you can take to the beach which is great and frankly more than I expected. We also liked having a pool in addition to the ocean for a dip at the end of a day on the beach. Note: if you like to sleep in later than 10am, or are looking for a romatic getaway, stay in a room that doesn't face the pool, as the kids do make noise all day. Not a problem for us since we were on the beach or out exploring Montauk all day.

The location is fantastic - you can easily stay here without a car since the main drag is a few minutes walk away. Restaurants are within a few blocks' walk. And we liked stopping by Nick's for a drink in the evening just down the road. Tip: bring a flashlight for walking at night if you don't have a car, it gets pretty dark and there aren't many streetlights.

I'm honestly completely baffled by the comments regarding the rude staff. The people at the front desk as well as the pool and cleaning could not have been nicer to us. And anyone who is upset by having to pay in full before your stay - this totally sucks but is completely standard practice at EVERY place I've ever stayed in Montauk. In fact, I was really pleased that the Surf Club let me send a personal check - the place we booked in 2006 demanded a money order.

We stayed for a week at the Surf Club in an "ocean front" one bedroom. You are basically renting a condo - this is not a resort in the traditional sense. The biggest pro is you can not beat the location. You can hear the waves from your room and the beach in front of the property is clean and well maintained. The beach is great for taking long walks. Ditch plains is right down the beach and you can go watch all the surfers do their thing. Another plus is you can walk right into town from the hotel which was great because there is no food available unless you count a couple of vending machines. You need to bring everything with you - food, drinks, etc. I don't understand why they wouldn't have some sort of snack shop even if it was just a grill but they don't.

The condo units were pretty basic- kind of like staying at your grandparent's house if they lived at the beach. They could definitely use some updating, especially considering the ridiculous prices they charge in the summer. I was happy that we paid up for the ocean front unit though, the view and the sound of the waves made all the difference. The bad is the kitchens are tiny, the a/c is not the greatest and all they give you to sit on the beach are little half chairs, not chaise lounges like they have at the pool. The pool is a little on the small side, but it's fine for kids.

We really didn't have much interaction w. the staff but it is true that they make you pay in full by check when you make the reservation, no credit cards allowed. In this day and age, I thought that was a bit ridiculous but I know other places in Montauk have the same policy. Would we go back again? Maybe, but only because the beach is so great and there's not too many alternatives out there, not because we loved the "resort" itself.

This may be a great location, but they are absolutely the most awful staff Ive ever had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with. They made this potenitally beautiful property ugly. I travel quite a bit and had to go out to montauk for a wedding. I booked the room about 3 weeks in advance and had to overnight a check for payment in FULL (wouldnt allow payment by credit card) to reserve the room.

It doesn't get any better than this place! The condo-style rooms are amazing and this place is literally on the beach. One night here costs more money than most used cars but if you're filthy rich enough to spend over $1000 to stay for 2 weekday nights then go for it. Service could be better but who cares in such a great place like this. The clientele tends to be pretty old and farty though so if you're young, don't expect to meet any vacation drinking buddies. I love coming here off season when you can get a room for a measly $80 per night. Surf Club is highly recommended if you can afford it.

We stayed in one of the 1-bedroom beachfront units at the beginning of May (still low season so very reasonably priced). We were right on the beach and had a superb view, it's great being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. The unit was clean and well-furnished (apart from the kitchen having no cutlery!).

As it was early season we didn't use the pool or other facilities so can't comment on these.

The Motel is within easy walking distance of shops, bars and restaurants in the town centre.

Montauk is a great location, right at the end of Long Island. We didn't have a car (came on the LIRR train from NYC (Penn station) for a short break and got a cab from the station), you can hire bikes from the place opposite Strawberry Fields in the town centre (can't remember the name) and cycle out to the Lighthouse (highly recommended). A great place for a relaxing break, and there are other things you can do which we didn't have time for, such as horse riding and visiting the varous wineries in the area, plus you aren't too far from the Hamptons.
