Beautiful pool side setting and a small garden patio provide a gorgeous backdrop to a terrific brunch.Opt for the bottle of absolut champagne to go along with your brunch. Terrific buffet as well as a great menu are only topped by the awesome service

Pictures of rooms on the website are way better that the real thing. Everything is older.

Rude and unfriendly service. At the restaurant we received not fully cooked ribs and requested to cook it a little bit more.

The chef's answer was: it's too late for me today to deal with it, take it with you and bring it tomorrow and I'll finish cooking it for you. Nice??? That's not everything.

The next day we were sitting at the hotel's backyard with our own bottle of champagne and celebrating my girlfriend's BD when waiter appeared and said that chef requested as to leave to a remote, completely soaked by sprinklers seats because we were drinking our own champagne.
We ended up going to our room for the rest of the "romantic" birthday.

The shower was either scolding hot or completely cold water, no way to setup normal temperature.

The hotel has a casual beach chic look but has few amenities. The rooms are very basic without even phones. There is free WiFi but it only stays on for a couple of minutes before you are bumped off. The front desk staff was not overly friendly or helpful on check-in, was rarely there, but was very friendly (different woman at desk) at check-out. I wish she had been there when we checked in. The room has just the basics without a refrigerator or any extra touches. Friends staying in another room asked for a refrigerator and one was brought up. There is no ice machine but one can go down to the bar in the outside restaurant for it which is inconvenient. The restaurant is OK - typical high hotel prices for OK food and service. Complimentary toiletries were there upon check-in, but were not refreshed or replaced every day. The location is strange - not located in the town or on the water. There is a pool, but no hot tub. We drove down the street to the beach - not really walking distance because it's a busy highway. Even though the mattresses were on a platform, they were comfortable. There is no fitness center. There is no elevator. You have to shlep your own suitcases up a flight of stairs.

Room Tip: If you don't want to carry your suitcase upstairs, request a main floor room ahead of time.

Sole East is a full service resort conveniently located one mile from Downtown Montauk and its pristine ocean beaches. For guests who do not wish to walk or drive, bicycle rentals are available either by the day or hour. The reviewer is correct that there are no in room phones at Sole East...the phones were intentionally removed to ensure all guests a relaxing stay. The Front Desk is staffed 24 hours in season, and is always accessible for guests needs. Mini-refrigerators are available upon request for a nominal fee. Each guest room is appointed with fine Aveda products, which are replenished with each housekeeping room service. There is no on-site fitness center available, however there are a multitude of outdoor activities available to the Montauk visitor! The Front Desk Agents are happy to provide guests with information on local surf lessons & equiptment rentals, horseback riding, fishing charters, as well as jetski rental locations. There are also several public tennis courts and hiking trails located throughout Montauk for outdoor enthusiasts! The heated pool at Sole East Resort is surrounded by large Saint Tropez lounge beds. Poolside food & beverage service is available. Although there is no elevator, the Front Desk staff gladly provides bellhop service to any guest requesting luggage assistance.

Sole East is perfectly located for those looking to escape the city and enjoy the low key vibe of Montauk. The gardens are lovely and the overall concept of the resort is nice. The rooms are minimalistic and service is basically non-existent by virtue of how the hotel is set-up. If you are looking for privacy or are sensitive to noise, skip the main building. You can hear everything through the paper thin walls. For more privacy, try the garden rooms but beware that they are so spare, the larger space feels cold and unwelcoming. There is not one drawer to put clothing in. We stayed immediately following Labor Day and the rates were the same. The floors were not clean swept and there was a smushed dead bug attached to white tiles in shower. Overall, our stay was disappointing, especially considering the price.

Sole East spreads across its pleasant grounds in an initially unprepossessing manner. The main building, a 30s Tudor like the hallucinatory Montauk Manor, is all white, with arty photographs of surfers and bowls full of white shells. The rooms are all white too, walls, floors and ceiling. I stayed in three; one, a "luxury suite," nevertheless lacked more than one drinking glass. Another had a malfunctioning lamp. Such, I suppose, are the vagaries of "boutique" hotels, which is what Sole East is (no bellhops, no room service to speak of, and charming if sketchy front desk assistance). The restaurant, called backyard but announced by a plain sign reading RESTAURANT is excellent, with a copious breakfast and good lunches and dinners and inspired drinks, including one, a French 75 like concoction made with pro secco and ginger liquor, that was the perfect sun downer after days on the beach or lazing on the big comfy full length loungers ranged around the handsome swimming pool. The clientele skews young, with young children and small fluffy dogs.

We stayed here for a weekend in June for a friends art show. This is not a resort but a motel trying to be a boutique hotel on very lovely grounds. At check in we were told our room had an issue with the toilet I asked for a different room and seeing as we were checking in early afternoon. Most don't arrive until later. We were told that they could not switch our room all rooms have been assigned already. So we waited in our friends "suite" a tiny room attached to a room with a couch and tv. There bedroom had a door to the room next door that you could hear everything through. Our friends had 1 year old twins and the room next door had a bachelorette party with a male stripper. Even pay off I think. Finally we were told our room was ready and told the toilet had been fixed. It was a very slow toilet. Sometimes it flushed fully. The shower either had scorching hot water with a ton of pressure or cold water with no pressure. At one point I had to step out of the sheer because the water was so hot even on my feet! A/C is a unit in the window. It does help drown out the DJ or band that is playing at the Backyard late night. This is not a quiet hotel by any means. The hotel is overpriced for what your get. Breakfast is not included. The room itself is painted all white and the decor was nice and modern. Bed was comfortable. There were 2 bachelorette parties staying here one across the hall from us and the other as I said next to our friends. They stroll in drunk at 5am doors are thin so we heard everything. Pool is surrounded by day beds this is nice. The pool is not heated. And the DJ is really loud!!! There is a nice patio area with great couches and chairs however they do not take the cushions in when the sprinklers go on or if it rains so they are always soaking wet. We tried to enjoy a late meal , 10pm, at Backyard but again the DJ makes it so you can't hear the person next to you. For the money this hotel is not worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for something quiet, not sure where that would be.

It's not that this place is bad, it's just horribly overpriced and the overall experience is cheap and tacky nowhere near the quality it claims to be.

Based on my experience (3 weeknights in August 2013 @ $379 a night) here's what you shouldn't expect if you stay here:

- consistent, quick hot water (it took almost 10 minutes to heat up and then would randomly get freeezing cold)
- sound proof walls (we could hear every word the people next door said)
- a working tv (no channels worked and even after we complained and someone 'fixed' the problem, the channels were like watching a blizzard
- quality furnishings (the side tables are literally IKEA Lack tables which are $9.99)
- internet (their free network, "linksys"--which kind of shows the effort these guys put into everything--didn't work more often than not)
- electrical outlets (there are four in the room used by the tv, lights, window aircon unit and clock radio)

Here's what's good:
- unlike other commentators, I found the staff to be reasonable (though my gf had a bad experience with one who was snotty)
- the grounds are very nicely landscaped, with Adirondack chairs scattered around and a firepit.
- the pool area is great with Anton of loungers (though the glass walk around it detracts a little bit from the look)
- they have beach passes for parking at local beaches which is essential

Fair play to the owners of this place--they're getting away with charging extortionate prices for a very cheap motel, but experiences like this leave me feeling ripped off and wanting the business to change, or fail.

Do yourself a favor and stay at the Crow's nest--we went there for dinner, and while it's not cheap, everything was done so much better.
