“self-guided tour needs help”
Reviewed 16 October 2013

We arrived after the guided tours were over, so we tried the self-guided tour. The village is beautiful, and I was interested in learning about this persecuted religious minority, but the guide and the plaques just didn't provide enough information. The best exhibit was in the visitor center where the story about the Esopus tribe who sold the land to the Huguenot was told.

“Love the buildings”
Reviewed 8 October 2013

I love the old buildings and architecture. New Paltz is such a cute town, you can walk around and shop and grab a bite then check out some historic sites. Perfect for an all day kind of outing.

“History Saved”
Reviewed 7 September 2013

New Paltz, NY was found by twelve families. Unique is that most of the families' early stone houses are still here on Huguenot Street, the original 'Main Street' of New Paltz. Historic Huguenot Street is unique as the only museum site in the US that presents a collection of original houses in a village venue. Some, such as Williamsburg, are reconstructed based on research; others may present one historic house. A walk down Huguenot Street gives you the feeling of life in the 1700's. Knowledgeable docents provide tours of houses that are furnished in specific time periods; house interiors are thoughtfully presented, not a hodgepodge of old 'stuff'. The old French Church is reconstructed in its original location, adjacent to the cemetery where to original families are buried. There are tour options, so you can tour as few or as many houses as you wish. Parking is free as is walking the street. Tour fees are based on the number of houses visited. This is a worthwhile visit.

I really enjoyed my visit to this location. The buildings have been carefully restored and the street itself is charming. It makes for an interesting walk and look back into the past and the story of the Huguenots.
