We were directed to the Econolodge, New Windsor, NY by Choice Hotels toll-free number, which we had called to inquire as to room availability near West Point. We made the mistake of guaranteeing the reservation for late arrival, or we would not have stayed once we saw the room.
There were a number of apparent drug-dealers and a sporting lady at the side entrance where we were told to park - we ran that gauntlet (cigarette butts and trash litter the side of the building), to find our room with the ceiling in a state of near-collapse, the lock on the sliding glass door is non-functional, a worn out, pathetic drape with cigarette burns covered the couch. The desk chair has a loose drape over it to cover the stains on the seat pad. The air conditioner works intermittently. The carpet in the room was worn and dirty, as is the hallway carpet.
Shocked, but too tired from a day's drive to put up with hostilities from the management, we stayed. Only just now, too late, we read on-line reviews of previous guests having gotten bedbugs here !
On arising after a fitful night, at 6:30AM I ventured into the hallway to be accosted by a pajama-clad cigarette-smoking female asking me for money to operate the vending machine. At checkout the manager displayed utter indifference. I've rarely been in a place this bad since traveling in third-world rural areas.More
