Used this amazing B&B for a weekend of camping and can't say enough about how great the place and its hosts are!
The whole house has been recently remodeled and tastefully redecorated to make it comfortable and cozy. The rooms are very spacious, beds comfortable and bedding just right. The common areas are provide comfortable areas to settle in and enjoy a book, a board game (they have a nice collection) or time with friends. There is no TV (a plus) but there is free wifi to help you keep connected.
But the place is really made special by the owners Tony and Kelly whose welcoming manner, helpful suggestions and attention to their guests make you feel like family. Their breakfasts are unbelievable (and Kelly is really accommodating of dietary restrictions and other challenges) and made all the more enjoyable by the fact that they sit down to eat and visit with you.
I had never really explored this side of the high peaks before, and while it is sleepier than the Lake Placid/Keane area, there is a lot here to explore. And with the large tracts of newly acquired state land just opening up just to the south, this area is likely to see a lot more activity. These acquisitions make longer hudson rafting trips through the gorge more accessible, opens up a ton of choices for boating, provide a diversity of hiking opportunities and adds to the already endless options for backcountry skiing. Tony is an unbelievable resource for pointing you in the right direction for activities that suit your interests -- he already has me planning my next four or five trips!
One challenge in the area is the fact that there are not many dining or shopping options in the area -- although the High Peaks Kitchen has great food and friendly proprietors (its worth a visit or three). So next time we will bring some groceries to make trail lunches and some simple meals at the Hoot Owl (Kelly is quick to tell you to help yourself to whatever you need -- and she leaves out some wonderful baked goods).
And while they are attentive, Tony and Kelly don't hover and don't fuss. In fact, they don't live on site and give you complete run of the house -- although they are sure to leave their number so you can reach them if necessary.
Looking forward to using this as our home base as we explore the area some more in the future.
