I bought a day trip from New York City with airfare to Buffalo, boat ride in, lunch buffet, and transportation from Expedia.com and paid around $450 per person. Strongly recommend it if you have a day extra in NYC.

Pros about boat ride:
*you can't get closer to the falls than that! Great views
*you really experience the falls' majestic water sounds and feel how fast and hard the water runs.

Cons:
*you get wet; plastic rain coats are provided.
*do not take your nice camera out, cause it will get wet.

Although the boat ride isn't very long, you need the poncho they give you, if it's a slightly windy day you get drenched! The views from the bottom of the falls were fantastic. Go to the Cave of Winds first so you can get the sandals to wear on the boat ride otherwise your footwear gets soaked through!

The Maid of the Mist was fantastic and well worth the $17 ticket.
If you get to the state park where the Maid of the Mist is located and find that the parking lot is full, do NOT park in the visitor center parking lot. There are plenty of lots and garages just as close that will charge you $5 - $10 for the day. We were in a long line of cars waiting to park at the visitor center when we saw a garage right there charging $10 for the day and decided to park there instead. At the end of the day we were walking back to our car when my wife happened to ask the parking lot attendant at the visitor center how much they were charging. We were shocked to hear him say $25.00!!

The Maid of the Mist is definitely worth going. It's a short ride, but The boat gets close to the falls, the view is amazing.
