To be a five star hotel it must have the x factor this hotel may have had it several years ago,sug it
needs an urgent refit starting with the pool areas.Another area of concern is the lack of power.ie
just returned having spent 10 nights out of 14 with no air/con.not very nice I can assure you.allso
when evening meals are at the peak times it can get very hot indeed,.apart from above we had a great holiday all staff very friendly very clean resort.

Airport is an experience, a real two man band and that's it! Don't be in a rush! transfer takes literally 5 minutes and the first view of the hotel is breath taking at the shear size of the place. The check in was one of the speediest I have ever experienced, credit to the hotel, with a very much appreciated welcome drink and dancers to greet us. The hotel room was a walk to say the least, we had room 0240 which was one of the furthest away from the restaurants but after the eating the incredible array of food they serve, the walk was much appreciated. I have to say the buffet food hall was the most amazing I have seen, the food available was incredible and it was great to see the chefs coming out to survey the food and serving areas, I noted how many times the serving chefs washed their hands and how many times the serving cutlery was changed, truly a credit to the hotel, the cleanliness overall in the hotel was second to non! The rooms don't have a mini bar or coffee making facilities, no flannels and the hairdryers are blowers that last for only about 5 minutes so take your own. The bookable restaurants are worth a visit but you have to be quick off the mark if you want to get in, you need to ask at 8am 3 days before you plan to eat or you wont get in! the pools and bars and facilities in the hotel are fabulous, you can get water for the room at reception. You can hire a kettle from the hotel shop but it will cost you 2 euro's a day and 50 euro deposit. Don't forget any toiletries, hairspray for example is 10.50 euro's! pringles 6 euro, snickers bar 2 euro, so if you need chocolate , take ya own n stick it in the fridge. The entertainment is ok, not professional but watchable and the sound management needs some working on! the sea is incredibly choppy, most days you couldn't go in but some did and suffered the consequences, there was a lot of fractured and dislocated arms and feet through not observing the flag warnings, the local hospital charges 10 euro a night and that's without treatment, they have no drugs on the island or surgeons, so basically if you're injured ask if there is anyone in the hotel who can help, the rep will tell you this. Their isn't anything to buy, no jewellers, no clothing stores, the town sells mainly paintings and rope/bead bracelets, this was my cheapest shopping trip ever! The trips are limited as well as most of the island is rock and sand but its worth taking the one trip around the island just to see it before it gets too developed as already half the island has been sold off for tourism. Overall it was a fab holiday, well chilled out and one of the best suntans I've ever had! credit to the hotel and its staff, they are a well oiled machine! but the hotel is not 5* in my experience its a damn good 3* plus maybe 4 but the hotel is really worth a week away, we did two weeks which unless you're a beach bunny you may find a bit monotonous, do visit though.

Room Tip: if you have trouble walking or children, ask for a room closer to the eating restaurants, we were in...

Stayed 11 nights on 3rd October with hubby and our good friends, booked exit seats on plane which were well worth the money for outgoing and return flights. Hotel is only a 5 min transfer but
no aircraft noise at hotel. Athough this was a really large hotel it never felt over crowded. We had fantastic sea view rooms next to each other on floor 2 which we had requested via e mail 2 weeks before we travelled. Rooms were cleaned daily and clean towels whenever u wanted them.

Take lots of suncream and mozzie spray as these are expensive to buy once you are there. Food and drinks were excellent, but we used the main restaurant and not the one near the pool. Pool bar and other bars always filled with happy staff who wanted to serve you with a smile.
We used the a la carte restaurants which were good and no problem to book a couple of days in advance.

Went on the walk to sal rei with the Thomson rep which was good but got a taxi back as it was far to hot to walk back.
Also used Skuba Caribe based on the beach in front of the hotel, we used the kayaks and pedaloes which were good fun, we also hired beach buggies for a 2 hour trip which was excellent well worth the money.

The pool has got tiles missing and needs a complete re furb, but we used the pool and pool bar every day and it did not spoil our enjoyment. RIU need to sort this though before it becomes a major problem as it will only get worse.

our other halves used the sauna each evening but mens sauna was out of action during our stay so had to use the ladies sauna, which was ok but should be repaired quicker, also would of saved time if sauna was upto temperature when booked.

Overall this is a good hotel with good food, great staff and a fantastic beach.
If you know before you travel this is a small island with little to do then you will have a fabulous holiday as we did.

The entertainment team work really hard to put on shows in the evening which are ok, and during the day the staff put on lots of activities for you but are never pushy, you take it or leave it.

Room Tip: e-mail hotel for sea view room.

visited at the beginning of October 2013 for 10 days and can't complain about anything at the resort, myself and my girlfriend found the resort clean and well kept and the staff were very attentive. The beach which is where we spent most of our time was always free of rubbish and the water was beautifully clear and warm, although most of the time the yellow or red flags were out meaning that it was choppy but it didn't stop anybody from jumping in an enjoying themselves.
The food in all of the restaraunts was very good and varied, especially the Alacarte cape verde restauraunt which doubled as the snack bar during the day.
We did 3 trips whilst we were there, 4x4 tour, quad bike 4 hour ad the catermaran. The quad bike was by far the best and really showed you what the island has to offer.
The transfer from the airport (4 mins) is briliiant and means you can start your holiday, literally from the moment you land. Although the airport is only a stones throw from the resort it doesn't interfer with the peace and tranquility of the place as planes only come and go twice a day and its during daylight hours as there are no landing lights on the runway!.
I would definately recommend the resort and the island,

Room Tip: 2nd or 3rd floor rooms at the front of the hotel are best as you get a great sea view and sunsets.

Hi.Stayed here 23/9 - 7/10.Had a great time.Food was good, and the fact that there are 3 other speciality restaurants aswell as the main one, which were free, but you do need to book as they are quite popular. We can recommend the Aisian, its lovely !.
Nice big, clean room(2064),with a lovely sunny balcony. Also quite close to the dining room ,reception etc ....
The staff are wonderful.Happy to help, always polite and the guys that do the volleyball, aerobics, dancing in the evenings etc,are fantastic.Always so happy and friendly, and very energetic !!
Would highly recommend this if all you want from a holiday is sun, relaxation and good food.
Oh and finally,the transfer is only 3 mins,bonus !!!

Room Tip: I would request a 1st or 2nd floor room ,if stairs are no problem,as if they have any rain showers...

We stayed at Rui Karamboa for 2 weeks on 19th Sept. After reading reviews I'd an idea what it was going to be like and knew that Boa Vista is very remote and theres nothing outside hotel. The hotel is only a 2 min bus ride from airport which is good and as the airport is very small theres not much noise at all.

I had emailed hotel and requested a room on a upper floor which we got. I wouldn't give the room a 5 star rating but it was well kept and very clean and didn't intend on spending much time in there. I wouldn't give the hotel a 5 star rating as there was no waiter service which you would expect with a 5 star. The hotel grounds are spotless and the staff work really hard to keep it that way.

The food was good and plenty of choice for everyone. My favourite a'la carte was the Asian. We had no problem booking any of the restaurants. The meals can get a bit same if there for 2 weeks but its like that anywhere.

The entertainment staff were brilliant and worked very hard and put on some good shows in the evening. Whilst there we went on a full island tour with a company called Giggling Gecko's, cannot recommend them highly enough. Jen and Richard went out of their way to make sure everyone had a fantastic time. They have a face book page and a website, so if anyones thinking of booking a trip use them, you won't be disappointed!! The Saturday night fever was brilliant.

If anyones after a nice relaxing break away and not bothered about staying in the hotel then this is the place...next best thing to carribean without carribean prices.

No this is not five star, nowhere near actually, but it's nice enough and certainly worth visiting the island while it still has it's natural and unspoilt charm.
It is a new holiday resort, there are limited hotels and I believe on this basis you are never going to get a five star, as you would expect in more established countries, but at the same time is it not accurate for holiday companies to sell it as such.

Instead of repeating what others have said ill just give you some tips from my experience;

Tip one; taxis are only €5 from the hotel to the airport, so don't book one with the travel company grab one at the airport if you want to miss the rush to reception and don't want to sit waiting for 30 mins outside the airport on a bus from 1970 that was used to death in Spain grab a taxi. If not to the hotel on the way back, you wait in direct sunlight to check in, there are limited check in staff and limited shade....... 5€ to beat an hour queue is so worth it.

Tip two: don't be concerned with changing currency. We took euros and they were excepted everywhere. Just take small bills as you might get some national currency back but it's just pocket change you can get rid of at the airport.

Tip three; there is NO entertainment on the plane so take something to do, watch or read. They are also very shy with drinks so grab something from the airport to initially have on board.

Tip four; do book early to sample the restaurants they make a nice change to the main restaurant.

Tip five; people do wait until nine then put their towels on the sun beds and they get full......if you can't beat them join them.

Tip six; take advantage of the Thomson free walk into town along the beach. Be aware it is quite a tough walk along the sand, the town will be full of people trying to sell you stuff which can be a little intimidating and if you wait at the bar for the free taxi your ready to leave a good hour before the taxi arrives.

Tip seven; it's cloudy but SO SO HOT. Everyone you see is either brown or lobster pink so take lots of sun cream, it's very costly in the shops, and keep applying it even in the cloudy times.

Tip eight; it's worth taking some mosquito stuff with you, we didn't see many but some people were bitten badly.

Tip nine; the sand on the beach is crazy hot when the suns out so watch it midday take your flip flops.

Tip ten; the entertainment team, while good, don't really introduce themselves, so don't be afraid to ask or get involved.

Overall if you don't expect to much you won't be disappointed. The place is very clean, staff are friendly and weather is hot...... Oh and the beach with only you and nothing for miles is stunning..... But this is what you should go for not the five star expected service. It's a poor newly developing country go for the experience and enjoy.
