“Great hotel if you forget about the surroundings-great diving center”
Reviewed 21 September 2011

we had a very pleasant week in this hotel. Almost no children at sight, one could read and even sleep siesta in the pool. Breakfast was good and the decoration and atmosphere, simple but cosy.
On top of it, there is a great diving center with a very professional and nice instructor, Joao Guedes. We dove every day twice and we enjoyed it very much. And very comfortable diving, Joao would pick us up directly with the boat on the beach in front of the hotel, and drop us there too, very convenient!
The only bad thing is that the road is being constructed just in front of the hotel. we were not disturbed in the hotel but it is ugly and depressing when you step out of it. It is not so close to the village but if you don't like the big all inclusive hotels, this is a very good option. We would return

Room Tip: Ask for a room where the terrace is individual

Dunas de Sal is a friendly 49 rooms hotel, it's quiet, only has entertainment (live music) on Friday.
Meals in the restaurant are good and usually based on local cuisine but there are also international cuisine dishes.
Breakfast (buffet) is very good.
The gym is small but free to use.
The beach is 300 meters away and the village of Santa Maria is as far as a 10 minutes walk along the beach or you can take a cab for 2 euros (3 euros at night)
The hotel provides sun shades and loungers for free.
The surrounding area (streets) is temporarily in the works.

We were looking for a sunny and relaxed vacation to escape from the cold european winter. The hotel did absolutely meet our expectations. No busy all inclusive but a nicely decorated small hotel with friendly staff. Breakfast was good as well al lunch options. Dinner quality was good but the choice of fish we hoped to taste was limited in the beginning of the week. The last 2 days it was perfect.
The private beach is on walking distance, no F& B facilities at the beach.
Hotelpool is big and nice chairs and atmosphere. Water very, very cold though.
Bedroom spacious with nice and clean bathroom.

Beautiful, quiet and very clean hotel in design style. Rooms are ok, all have an outside seating looking at the pool. Breakfast and restaurant are excellent. 10 minute walk to Santa Maria, 2 minute walk to the beach (sunbeds reserved for the hotel guests).
We loved it and will return.

If you’re trying to run away from the busy resorts, this is the place!
The staff is OK, we’ve had no problems with them (except for the girl that welcomed us during the night that was obviously too sleepy to even talk)

The rooms are ok in size, but could be a bit modern and comfortable… the mattress and pillows are very bad! It was always very well cleaned and AC worked properly! Sometimes hot water could take a while, but it was probably due to the huge number of people using it as it always happened just after the sunset.
Breakfast could have a bit more variety and quality, but it felt nice to take it outside.
In the restaurant you can count with a very friendly staff and amazing chef! But the service takes forever (usually it took more than a hour from ordering to get the entrances) and it’s a bit pricey…
Same thing for the bar… but prices were a bit more acceptable!
The health club, if we can name it that, is a bit disappointing. You need previous booking, people in the reception can’t help you with the description of the massages and the health club is small, dark and because its always closed, it smells like mold
The swimming pool is what made us choose this place. And we didn’t regret! It’s amazing to spend some time by the pool drinking sangria and always listening to well thought lounge music!
The wifi should be free like in the majority of the resort, especially because it’s so slow…
It’s suppose to exist a beach space reserved for the hotel, but the sun beds and umbrellas were old and broken.
Don’t go for the all inclusive thing unless you drink a lot, because if you do the math you’ll realize that even ordering 3 or 4 drinks per day and eating lunch in the bar and dinner in the restaurant, all inclusive will still be too expensive!

Only big con: its not beach front! But a 5 minute walk will take you there!

But in the end I would defiantly recommend this hotel for those who look for rest by the pool…
