“Top Quality Penthouse Apartment”

First getting to the resort from the airport...use Ildo, he is brilliant; he was waiting for us at arrivals but more of him later. We got in without paying for a visa, no idea how.

Second checking in. You will have to check in before getting to your apartment. They will try and persuade you to go all inclusive, but because we intended eating in Santa Maria a few times it didn't make sense so we went green. By that I mean we had to wear a green wrist band denoting we had to pay for our food and drink. Everyone must wear a wrist band as the colour denotes whether you are all inclusive or not. Red was all inclusive and very expensive. You will be asked to show it every time you want some food or drink. They will also ask for your credit card details when you register. Edna met us at reception and was very helpful.

Third the apartment. Very high quality, modern, clean and well equipped. Positioned just across the road from the main entrance to the Melia Dunas resort with all its amenities and about a 7-8 minute stroll to the beach. Lovely balcony to sit out with a g and t in the evening and useful for drying washing. On top a sun terrace with 2 loungers. WIFI was excellent in the apartment with "Melia-In-house" giving a strong signal at all times. Vanessa always quick to respond to questions. 5 stars.

Fourth the resort. Modern and well equipped with bars, restaurants, pools and sun loungers. A few shops but no good for stocking up the apartment, you need Cazu in Santa Maria for that. We used the beach mostly as sitting around the pool reminded us of "Benidorm" a bit. All shapes, sizes and nationalities on display. The beach is nice with lots of sun loungers, but beware of using the wrong hotels loungers as you will be asked to leave and use the Melia Dunas loungers.

Fifth the weather. Incessant strong wind for 7 days nonstop. To use the sun loungers we had to build a fortress out of sun loungers and the available wind breaks otherwise it would have been unbearable. The temperature was always around 25 deg C. Wi-Fi could be picked up on the beach but was variable. At night wrap up well as it cools down quickly and eating outside is not enjoyable unless the restaurant has heaters.

Sixth Cazu. Get a taxi from the resort. They will wait for you if you ask them. Not fantastically stocked but enough for a self-catering apartment to set you up. We only cooked breakfast so eggs, milk, bread etc. Wine, spirits, beer as well as shower gel etc. all available.

Seventh Santa Maria. During the day you will be pestered by "Looky looky boys" to buy their sub standard trinkets. It’s all the same and a waste of time. They all have a brother in Manchester and their mother owns the shop and they support Chelsea or Man U. Beware. At night it is a different matter, the whole town comes alive. Great restaurants and bars most of them reasonably priced. We loved the place but only at night.

Eighth the island. Use Ildo to take around the island. He charged us 80 euro for about 6 hours. He has a very nice four by four, much better than the trucks where they sit you in the back on bench seats in the open. He is also very knowledgeable about the island and speaks excellent English. Shark bay is a bit of an ordeal as you need special footwear to walk on the stones out to the sharks, and you will get wet. You have been warned. Take a swimming costume to float in the salt lake in the volcano. Great day out.

Overall we had a great time and the holiday far exceeded our expectations.

“Accurate Reporting”
Reviewed 6 February 2018 for a stay in January 2018

Probably the nicest apartment we have ever stayed in. Very spacious, extremely clean, private modern apartment which is immaculately decorated and furnished to a high standard and has it’s own roof level sun deck. Exactly as described and full credit to Vanessa, the owner who always works hard to please and responds promptly to communications.
Useful info: Walk to Sante Maria (where it all happens) along the beach is beautiful but hard work and can take 2 hours. Walking a similar route on the uneven parallel volcanic cobbled road takes about an hour and a quarter but walking out of the hotel main gate, turn left along the uneven cobbled path to the roundabout then right alone the smooth pavement along the main road only takes 25 minutes at a brisk pace or half an hour relaxed. A Taxi will cost 3€ until 6pm then 4€ after 6pm. Taxi to/from Airport is 20 minutes and 15€.
Hotel supermarket is extremely poor. Best supermarket in Sante Maria is Supermercado Kazu although everything is 2, 3 or 4 times more expensive than UK. Bread is fresh and superb, milk is longlife but ok. Plenty of restaurants in Sante Maria, most of which have nightly live music but our favourite was the Ocean Cafe in the main square although they have a limited menu of fish & chips, pizza, chicken & chips and some pasta meals all of which are 8 to 15 €. Half litre of draught Strela beer is 3€ (300 escudos. Rough exchange rate is £1 = 1€ = 100 escudos. Don’t bring escudos home as they can only be used in CV. We heard of some petty money theft whilst there so keep your money safe. Buy freshly caught fish such as Tuna and Wahoo in the afternoon directly from the fishermen on the pier. Very tasty and tuna was around 8€ per kilo. Be aware that Sal is very quiet and the main activities are kite surfing, wind surfing and some diving. Beyond this there are very few tours so you can expect a very quiet, chilled out, relaxing holiday. Island motto is “No Stress”. We would definitely recommend this apartment to anyone. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy

“Perfect stay”
Reviewed 1 January 2017 for a stay in December 2016

everything as mentioned, appart super vast and crispy clean, taxi driver on time at the airport for the transfer to the Hotel. The owner Vanessa was always responsive and dynamic. The management company also, despite the new year festivities.we took the all inclusive for the whole stay (easier for the kids), and only tried 4 of the 9 pools! We'll come again next year for sure. Thanks again.

The trip went seamlessly. It is a truly lovely apartment, spacious and beautifully decorated and the roof terrace was a super bonus. It had everythg you could want the owner was really accommodating and super helpful in organising the taxi from the airport and a welcome pack with wine on arrival :):) Wld recommend, be mindful though it is on the third floor and there is no lift available so suitcases have to be taken up and down the stairs if there is not a staff member around to help.

“Quality pent house”

We stayed in the pent house towards the end of March 2016.
I would like to thank Vanessa for the fabulous customer service in arranging the apartment.
The apartment is just as you see on the photos to a very clean and high quality.
The apartment is in a central location on the complex which is spacious and also of a high standard.
We found the pools and the facilities excellent and was right on the beach and a five min taxi ride to main town Santa marina.
We decided to upgrade to all inclusive for our stay for convenience as there are no other restaurants around without taking a taxi which is very cheap 3-4 euros or complimentary hotel shuttle to town.
It was £65 euro under 12,s half price, both food and drinks plentiful and of a good quality, you can upgrade at reception for your choice of days if you fancy mix and match with all inclusive / self catering/meal out in town.
The option is there to self cater as the apartment is fully equipped and has extras like microwave, washer, iron, hair dryer etc.
There is a big supermarket a short taxi away to stock up.
We ate in Santa marina on our first night which was very nice and reasonable and I believe there are many good restaurants so don't miss out.
The weather was hot windy with a bit of cloud.
I hope to return.

Always wanted to go to Cape Verde since seeing it on tv. No direct flights from Glasgow so Manchester Airport it was.
Started to look for a place to stay and came across a penthouse in the Melia Dunas Beach Resort complex by home owner which advertised on trip adviser. There is only one thing to say....firstclass....but will say more. Owner Vanessa was very helpful with lots of local info and suggestions for dining etc and organised for us to be met at airport and taken to resort. The apartment was great location over looking gardens and the hotel foyer onto the sea. Sun comes over balcony about 10.30 am in jan right through till sunset. There is a roof terrace and the balcony is brilliant for drinks watching the sun go down. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, lounge, kitchen all very spacious and very clean. Would highly recommend it to anyone. You have the independence to do what you want but still able to use the hotels facilities and the wonderful sandy beach to relax on. Will definately be back.
