Makweti was a wonderful start and the absolute highlight of my recent African adventure. We were warmly greeted at the gate by Kevin, with the swiftest efficiency bags were loaded onto the jeep, as we set off we brushed past citronella bushes and the sweet smell of the African bush washed over us and transported us into our African dream, the Welgevonden game reserve is a world of it’s own with grassy planes were the buck roam free and lions slumber in the heat of the day, to the rocky outcrops where the Leopards play.

Before we even reached the lodge we were treated to a sighting of a recent leopard kill unfortunately no sign of the illusive predator he had had his fill, we didn’t know at the time but that night his leftovers were doing to give us a rare treat of seeing a brown hyena (our unique Makweti moment).

Being at Makweti is like visiting your favourite friends, Kevin, Melanie and Felie are the perfect hosts it was as if they knew what we needed before we did. The lodges are well designed and tastefully decorated each one offers privacy and its own unique view, a perfect setting to soak up the vista and sounds over the valley, it was a little chilly in April to make use of the outdoor facilities but something to look forward to on our next visit. The menu was a lovely take on some South African favorites portions are generous , the wine list complemented each of the dishes perfectly.

It was such a wonderful experience seeing all the amazing African beasties in a natural setting , knowing that the only thing these animals will ever be shot with is a camera meant I could really embrace the experience with a clear conscience knowing they are safe for future generations, if only all African experiences could ensure this legacy.

On our return to the main gate Ellard was relaying his stories of Africa and his experiences at Makweti it seems every guest gets a unique experience, no two days in the African bush are ever the same, the story doesn’t end here we will be back.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 3 which had spectacular views down the valley,

This lovely Safari Lodge really knows how to treat its customers well! From the extremely well equipped chalets to the excellent food and the 'up close and personal' game viewing Makweti offers a great experience.
Service is spot on - but with no hint of formality; that is to say, the staff make you feel like a guest of the family. It's cold on winter evenings and mornings, so hot water bottles in the bed and, even better, to put under the blankets and ponchos for the morning game drives, were a very welcome touch.
There are not masses of animals in the reserve, however the guides are great trackers and spot things you wouldn't see by yourself. We had really good sightings of the 'Big Five' and also of many other species. In many cases it was just our vehicle and the animals, so it felt like a personal viewing (and when the baboons were drinking out of the plunge pool on the deck outside our room it was even more personal!).
As well as the flora and fauna there is also some amazing rock art in the reserve which is well worth a visit if you can arrange it.

Took a team of five to stay here as a treat after we finished with our misison work. Everyone was very friendly and helpful and Test and Keven were both great guides. The rooms were great, food was excellent, and the game drives very good. The property is not fenced off so we even had an elephant wandering around our cabins on the last day. Everyone on the team was very impressed and loved the experience.

Room Tip: Number 1 & 2 are over a short suspension bridge.

My wife and I had the pleasure of a 3 night stay in Makweti. The service we received from all the staff was exceptional. Our room was beautiful and private in the natural bush surroundings. The food was incredible, and to top it off, the game viewing was awesome! Guided viewing with an experienced game ranger (Kevin) made the world of difference! What a legend! I know we will be back! Over this weekend, we had the pleasure of having a quick weekend away at Makweti Safari Lodge. In around 24 hours at the lodge, we had a total of four game trips (admittedly two were on the way in and out to the main gate of the Welgevonden Game Reserve in which its based), but in that time we got to see 4 of the big 5, and most of them extremely up close and personal.

The scenery is amazing, the setting of the safari lodge incredible (right at a beautiful waterfall), the service and food world class, and extremely personal, and the wildlife incredible. We had an amazing room also, and while the lodge only has 5 rooms, and so a max capacity of 10, they have two vehicles so you are never squashed onto a vehicle and enjoy such personal attention its quite unique in this world of otherwise bulk safaris. At Makweti we were part of a very small intimate family, and still had the personal space we needed. It's an unfenced camp so you are taken to your room at night by an experienced guide, but that also adds to the excitement of being there. The rooms are beautiful and yet not overly pretentious and ours had a great deck and plunge poole with views of the valley. There is no mobile coverage, so you may need to give your family the lodges number for emergencies, but they do have a Wi-Fi area near the lounge where you can connect if you need to. Idea is however you unwind and forget the world outside, and we did do that despite the short break! Close enough to Gauteng for a quick weekend away and well worth making part of any international visitors itinerary to South Africa.

Room Tip: All rooms are great (saw a few), but we stayed in room 2 with its spectacular views, and pool deck...

Wow, Wow, Wow covers it.

What an experience from the moment that you get picked up from the Lodge gates. Elephants, lions, leopards, wilder-beast, hippos - we saw these to name but a few. Twice daily drives all through the reserve are thoroughly enjoyable as well as just stunning. Being that close to wild animals is as breathtaking as the views that you experience on a daily basis. Kevin, our guide and Melanie the host/manager were simply delightful. Welcoming, funny and super knowledgeable - you couldn't ask for more. Nothing is too much trouble and their passion for the lodge and the animals shines brightly and prominently.
The lodge itself is something from a dream - each mini lodge looks like something from a film. They have every amenity (possible) you could want within a beautiful yet safari based, room setting. The food is of Michelin quality; the lunches and the evening meals are simply divine and they cater to any allergies/dislikes with no questions.
Although this is my first ever safari - I have probably been spoilt for life. This was an amazing, once in a lifetime trip and place to experience it; I feel blessed to have visited Makweti.

We are spirits who have chosen to have a human experience.

There is a place where the spirit soars on the wings of a black chested snake eagle. A gem that sparkles as bright as Venus in the velvet African night sky.

This is Makweti.

Standing on the deck for the first time drew aquid moments from my eyes.

A haven where every wish comes true.
As gracefully as a giraffe gliding a landscape of sublime hues.
Where, you ask the universe and it is so.
That’s the truth of Makweti.

You can feel divine energy in the rush of the wind, the smell of the air, the sound of nature’s song.
So why be depressed at the past, or anxious of the future when you can just be at Makweti?

Every day takes on the rhythm of the wild.
Each experience as unique as a zebra’s pelt.

The animals teach us how simple life can be.
At Makweti there is only me.
And my thoughts.

So come.
Lift your vibration and sing the universal song of love.
And have memories stamped with the weight of an elephant’s foot on your heart.
At Makweti.
