Mhondoro Game Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 24 August 2013

We had an excellent 3 night stay at Mhondoro in the Welgevonden reserves. The room was comfortable with an excellent view of the lodge's watering hole, where we saw baboon, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, giraffe, and elephant! We had the great fortune to have the lodge's manager, Leon, as our ranger. His knowledge was thorough and his enthusiasm contagious! We saw lionesses and their cubs every day, along with several excellent sightings of elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and a multitude of other animals, along with spectacular views. The only suggestion we would have had to make it even better would be to make the beds true "king size" beds in each chalet, as the existing beds were a little small. But we were told that new larger beds were being ordered. I will also say that the food was excellent with both continental and proper English breakfasts and delicious gourmet dinners), and tea time also offered an excellent selection of freshly prepared items. The drinks were also very good and did not kill your wallet at check-out. A big thanks to Leon and the Mhondoro staff for a wonderful family visit!

We have visited many game lodges and parks in Africa and this rates as one of the best, especially when you don't have to pay exorbitant rates. John and Dominique were the perfect hosts and John is the best game ranger we have had the pleasure of being with. His knowledge is extensive and his passion remarkable. Dominique's hospitality and the Chefs food is sublime, rooms are great and the general ambiance spot on. Velgefonden itself is a hidden gem with the most varied topography from ravines and rivers to grassy plains which allows for the most varied of game sightings within a short distance of each other. It certainly comes highly recommended.

Being in the Welgevonden Game Reserve, this is a nice property in a non malarial area.

We had a great welcome at the Main Gate, our ranger Sylvester was waiting for us with snacks and cold drinks before driving us to the lodge.

Mhondoro was refurbished last 2011, which means excellent common areas as well as new modern rooms, without being luxurious. Check their website before booking so that you can have a look at their 4 Suites, all of them are different. If you are a couple we would recommend the Tau, where we stayed, the farthest one from the Main Lodge and with views of the waterhole (we were lucky to see zebras, elands, wildebeest and impalas from the deck of our room).

Our room was very comfortable, with a lovely outdoor shower as well as a huge bathtub and a gas fireplace. Only thing... the bed was really on the small side.

Sylvester was an incredible ranger and guide. We still remember the night when while having dinner, we were told that a pride of lions was at the Lodge waterhole! We were the only clients that night at the Lodge, and without thinking twice, Sylvester told us to get into the jeep parked downstairs and drove for two minutes to the waterhole. Amazing to see the male, females and cubs at night time and so close! Thank you for a memorable evening!

We had excellent game viewing with frequent cheetah sightings and lions every day. We even got a visit from one of the male lions while having our morning drinks, and had to abandon our breakfast. Luckily he was not too interested in our muffins...

The food was not sophisticated but plentiful and homely prepared by the always smiling ladies in the kitchen. We had a boma night, and enjoyed every meal.

After 5 days horse riding at the amazing Horizon Horseback in Vaalwater, we spent 3 days at the Mhondoro. Sylvester was a real genius to find the big 5 (we only missed the Leo ...). Food was amazing and the team war first class. Spot and the lodge were 5stars places. Only potential development could have been the massage. We'll come back fro sure.

I came here with my family and some friends. The main management were not here at this time, and we were greeted by Sylvester and his fabulous team. He was absolutely amazing, so caring and dealt with any small issues we had. The trip were outstanding and he spotted even the tiniest sights. John and Dominique returned on our last day and this really changed the atmosphere. Although they seemed very pleasant they seemed to very intruding and in your face and I much rather the evening meals with Sylvester than John. Overall, we had an amazing time and I would definitely revisit.

My friend and I were desperately looking for a last minute safari experience near Johannesburg for bank holiday weekend. After deciding the Kruger was too far for only two nights, our agent found us this absolute gem on the Thursday morning, leaving Friday. We were due to be collected from the main gate at between 1 - 1.30pm, however ran in to bank holiday traffic and roadworks on the way, and had to call to say we would be 45mins late - this was no problem at all, our first indication that John and Dominique were highly accomodating and welcoming.

John greeted us with a smile and a beer (or gin and tonic!) as we waited for the other guest who was 5mins behind us. You leave your car at the security manned main car park and John takes you on the 45min journey to the lodge through the park, this is where your drives begin! We were lucky enough to see a Leopard kill having being dragged in to a tree on our way to the lodge, as well as some general game, so it is a good start.

We were met at the lodge by Dominique with a hot towel each, and the rest of the staff singing a welcome song and offering drinks. You can tell instantly that the service is going to be impeccable and we were never disappointed throughout.

In summary, the four game drives we went on were enthralling. John is a young enthusiastic and funny ranger, with a good eye for tracks and a steady wine pouring hand! We went as two good friends, but the lodge would be perfect for a group of 2 or 3 families who know each other as it only holds up to 10 people and you could have a real laugh. We were lucky as the family and couple that were also at the lodge were very friendly and social and we had most meals as a group. We did ask, but what if that isn't the case, and Dominique said they are also psychologists in trying to read peoples moods, and if you were e.g. a honeymoon couple then they would definitely sit you at a seperate table or even a romantic candlelit meal on your own balcony!

The lodge is a very modern refit from last year, with free wifi, complimentary bar, AMAZING large sunbathing sofa around a small pool, with 6 sunbeds also on a nice viewing deck of the waterhole. As we arrived, there were 6 Zebra, 4 Warthogs and a monkey around the watering hole which is a stones throw from the reception, quite an amazing sight for our check in.
A quick afternoon tea (including home made lasagne and dessert!) before getting right into the action on our first afternoon/early evening safari.

Snippet details; Rooms have a great outdoor shower, you also get a direct radio in your lodge to contact John in emergency through the night. We didn't spend a cent in the few days, it's all inclusive. John is as enthusiastic as any visitor, staying out an extra hour to get an evening view of a Lion who was chilling 5metres away from our truck... the pictures are outstanding. For every drive you are given a hotwater bottle in your seat - an absolute godsend!! Also, leaving times in the morning are negotiable if the group prefer to sleep until 6.30am to leave at 7am instead of a strict 5.30am start policy! The chef, Francis is very talented and we had a steak on evening one, and Lamb in mint sauce on night two. Also he makes fresh bread every morning to have with your cooked breakfast!

Negatives; a few spiders in the bathroom but you are given two cans of insect spray and the bed isn't a prob as has misquito net. It's hard to think of anything else!

Perfect for couples, as friends you will have a good laugh and the alcohol flows freely, and as a family then the kids are very well catered for. John and Dominique are the perfect hosts (have an amazing trip to the US guys!) and the small number of guests mean you get a custom built safari experience for your exact desires. Strongly reccomend.

Room Tip: We were in Lodge 1, there is a small chance this could be the room needed to be vacated in forest fi...

This is the second time we stayed here. There has been a change of management but it was as super as the first time. The trackers are really good, we saw the big five in 4 days.

Service was great.
