When you say "beach paradise"... this is it. Its not luxury or high end.. but perfect in every way. The place oozes rustic charm and you can tell the owners have put in a lot of love into it. There were very few people staying while we were there as was shoulder season...so was a very peaceful and tranquil time for us. Meals served on the beach, lounging on day beds, hitting the bar whenever we wanted, long walks on the beach where villagers went about their daily activities... would go back in a heartbeat.

We had been warned that so many places in Zanzibar are spoilt by over commercialization and harrassment from beach vendors. Mchanga is far removed from that. From the moment you drive through an old lived in village with people drawing well water and you arrive at the gates to Mchanga you are about to enter a secluded world of peace tranquiity and enchantment. The first word of friendly advice was that we wouldn't be needing our shoes for the next few days of our stay and so it proved to be. It truly is a natural haven which has been developed with the utmost in taste and style while retaining the natural beauty all around.
Gloria and Thomas are outstanding hosts, truly unto the manner born and the quality of service they set is met and exceeded by their team. I asked for some coconut water one morning but there was none available so the waiter proceeded to shimmy up a nearby palm tree machete in hand and two minutes later I was drinking fresh juice from the coconut ! I think Thomas trains the Staff in tree climbing.
Drinking coffee at sunrise in front of our room, watching the local village fishermen set out in their boats and the perfect stillness of a life unchanged in centuries is a sheer treat and later in day you can take a walking tour of the village along the beach and watch the day's catch being landed. Other than that, the pristine white sands and the sea breezes are all you need as the backdrop for true peace and relaxation.
The food is natural and excellent. We love seafood and requested octopus in advance which was duly delivered in a local curry sauce which still makes me salivate.
Mchanga is a must go to place, perfect to restore the soul and to savour the perfect balance of nature and comfort.

Room Tip: Room in front with uninterrupted views through the line of Palm Trees out to the ocean.

Very highly recommended. We had 5 nights full board at this extremely comfortable lodge in February 2014, and couldn't fault it. Gloria and Thomas were a pleasure to deal with both planning the visit and during, and Frank and Ramsa were very attentive during meals and at the bar. The sea-view lodge we had was roomy and clean, with an enormous bed and good shower (although the hot tap sometimes is a bit erratic). Room number 2 I think. I really enjoyed personal touches like the sarongs, the beach towels and the cookies and tea in the morning. The sharing library is good, and it was easy to plan excursions through Gloria. We went to Mnemba Atoll on a snorkelling trip run with Matemwe Beach Village, which was fabulous and a steal for USD45 pp, including transfer to and from boat, equipment and snack on board. We swam with dolphins, which was hugely unexpected and such a treat. All in all, a relaxing stay in a beautiful, secure environment. I miss the pool, the hammock, walks on the beach, the soft sand and Jack Larry the dog! Just watch out for the Exit tax - USD8 or 11,000 shillings - on your departure, and if you can, do check local flight times which may vary with little warning.

After our long safari this was exactly the place we were looking to relax and do nothing. Of our two weeks stay in Tanzania this lodge had the best food by far and the juice for the breakfast was always freshly prepared. The hotel environment was quite so you could enjoy the sound of the sea at all times. The room was very clean and provided beach accessories such as a beach basket and cover up. The beach area had the perfect amount of shade and was very clean. Gloria and Thomas were very accommodating and gave insights into life on Zanzibar. We would definitely come back to stay again at Mchanga if our travels take us again to Zanzibar.

It was absolutely perfect. From the setting and decor, which were heavenly yet simple and unobtrusive, to the owners, who were attentive but, again, unobtrusive... to the food- amazing!!!
I don't often write reviews so that really goes to show you just how wonderful I found the place.
I went there on my honeymoon and I couldn't have been happier. The huts don't have windows, just shutters, so you can hear the waves crashing nearby when the tide is in, and they lull you into a state of total calm and relaxation.
Early in the morning they'd leave a tray outside our room with some tea and biscuits.
We were there on a half-board basis so breakfast and dinner were included.
Breakfast was amazing, and you could choose from a bunch of things which were made to order just like all the rest of their dishes. You could choose from a variety of sweet and savory dishes ranging from local donut-type dumplings to spicy carrots!! Truly awesome.
Lunch wasn't included for us but one of the local waiters would come round and ask whether we wanted to order anything.
The same thing happened a couple of hours before dinner, and everything we tried was absolutely delicious, a real culinary delight.
You can lie around all day, no one shouts or makes too much noise- in fact, the few other people who were staying there (it only has about 8 rooms, I think) mostly just kept to themselves, read and had a few cocktails before dinner- same thing we did. Basically, if you want a place where music's blaring from the loudspeakers at all hours, this is not the place to go But if you're looking for an intimate holiday with your partner or family, it's just perfect.
This may seem irrelevant, but I really appreciated the fact that the place wasn't managed in a wasteful fashion. Just to give you an example, the pre-breakfast tray only had 2 (scrumptious) cookies on it, which is ideal since you're going to have breakfast later anyway and you're not there to gorge yourself. And the butter they brought with toast was just enough, and you could always ask for more. To me, that speaks to the owners' respect for their surroundings- Tanzania is, after all, a developing nation, and it would be utterly disrespectful to waste food there, of all places.
The beach is beautiful and white, though a little seaweedy- but that can't be helped.
The lounge chairs are massive and super comfy.
There's a nice little bar hut where you can have drinks.
There's a lovely spa with a view of the ocean.
The huts (rooms) are surrounded by white sand.
It's perfect :-) and I would definitely go back.

Wonderful location, the white sand of the Zanzibar coast does not disappoint. The sand extends into the lodge to give the impression that you are staying on the beach. Lovely pool, surrounded by palm trees, a perfect spot to sit and luxuriate in your surroundings. Super hosts, extremely helpful, while the staff were friendly and a pleasure to have around. Quite the most relaxing three days imaginable. We all absolutely loved it.

Room Tip: Sea view is glorious

I was there for 2 weeks with my wife to honeymoon. We had a sea-side-view lodge which was on one hand lovely furnished and gave as on the other hand a nice view through swinging palms to the sea. We also enjoyed starting our day with a cup of early morning tea (and cookie) in front of the lodge to proceed then -barefoot walking through the smooth sand which is all around the place- to the restaurant to have breakfast. Lunch and dinner were in a positive way very special to us because the food they served there tastes so different but very very good. We are so happy that we didn´t miss to snorkel to experience how beautiful the sea around Zanzbar is. All in all a very nice place to be with friendly stuff and with Gloria and Thomas two owners who also have a lot of different idears how to experience Zanzibar in different ways.
