“A good option in Stone Town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2012

We stayed at Pyramid for two nights this February and found it to be a really good option, especially for the price. The hotel is basic, but they clearly put a lot of care into it and the staff is very accomodating and willing to set-up any kind of tour or transfer you might need.

The rooms all have A/C and a fan. The bed was large and comfortable as was the bathroom.

The hotel is located outside of the more touristy part of Stone Town, although it's still pretty close, only a five minute walk from the Big Tree, although it can be quite desolate at night and it is more maze like than other parts of town.

One tip, the room rates are in dollars, but if you want to pay in shilling, their exchange rate is lousy. When we were there, every hotel and restaurant was 1500 shilling to the dollar, but Pyramid charged 1700, so if you can pay in USD, you'll be better off.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on a higher floor, the ground floor rooms can be quite dark.

Stayed here just one night, and found it to be a good value for Stone Town. Our room was located on the top floor (scary staircase!). The room was quite basic but nice and clean and included a working air conditioning unit, in room bathroom (water closet), and two beds with mosquito nets. It was in a good location with short walks to everything we wanted to see. Breakfast was average and served on the rooftop. The staff at the front desk were nice but not overly helpful (couldn't tell us where we were on the map). Overall, you get what you pay for, and it is a good bet if you are looking to save money.

For the money Pyramid is good value for stone town. It has a nice little rooftop where breakfast is served as well as tea or coffee in the late afternoon (included in the room price).

Like many small hotels in Zanzibar, there are good and not so good rooms so always ask to see the room first.

We had a lovely large room with a bathroom and ceiling fan. For extra money you can pay for air conditioning. The hotel was quiet and comfy, staff were very friendly.

The location is a little tricky to find but as most Tanzanians are very friendly, its not much of a problem. I would happily return to the Pyramid.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor seem to be the best. The third floor and the rooftop are accessed by some...

50 usd with breakfast. centrally located in old merchants house with authentic features near ferry station. 4 poster beds with mosquitonets and ceiling fan or airco. poor breakfast on rooftop that is very miserable and dirty. flooded bathroom after showering. multiple power breaks: when generator works it pumps dirty fumes directly in the rooms of the ground floor.
no fire escape and all windows are barred so there is a real fire hazard. acces to internet for 2000 TS an hour

Room Tip: rooms on the first floor seem to be the best. avoid ground and second floors

We had a nice room with a great huge bed and huge bathroom (not much else in the room though), and gorgeous rooftop terrace with included breakfast. The staff was helpful and it was a 3 minute walk from the ferry terminal. There are even little signs so you don't get too lost in the winding alley ways! We loved Zanzibar and Zanzibar Town is so gorgeous, definitely going back and would stay here again in a minute!

The price is more than ok. The lady that manages the hotel is very nice. The hotel is beautiful and well located. The bedroom is ok, a bit dark, but clean. Breakfast on the terrace of the hotel with a great view of the city.

If you expect honesty or professionalism from hotel management, you will not find it here.

I emailed the manager for a price quote for a triple and he replied with a price for a triple. When we checked in, the reception clerk refused to give the agreed-upon price. The next day, I showed the manager a print-out of our email exchange. It confirmed that I was right. We hoped for a simple refund of the money that we were owed. Instead, the manager was insulting, arrogant and condescending . Not only did he refuse to return our money, he blamed us for pointing out his mistake. He called us heartless culturally insensitive for daring to asking for our money back.

A businessperson who makes a mistake knows to apologize and correct the mistake. He did not apologize. He avoided accepting blame and chose to blame it on us. Further, he was baffled at the idea that you have to take responsibility for your own mistake. During our conversation, I was uncertain whether I was speaking to a grown man, or to one of the six-year-olds in my classroom.

Save your time and your money. Bring your dollars to places where honesty and courtesy are not foreign concepts. Avoid the Pyramid Hotel.
