We stayed for 5 nights just before Xmas. We stayed in one of the beach bungalows which was quite expensive $95) but it was nice to be so close to the sands and the room was very spacious with a nice veranda for sitting on. It had air-con but they seemed to turn it off sometimes and one night there was no power for most of the night - it got pretty hot without even the fan. Not quite bug proof (saw ants, a cockroach and a centipede inside the room or bathroom) but this is not unusal in tropical places and didn't bother us. The bed was large and comfortable.

The beach itself was great and is one of the best beaches on Zanziabr for swimming at all tides (we visited 2 others and Kendwa was the nicest). The water is an amazing blue colour and you can watch dhows sailing by occasionally (both local fishermen and of course dhows for tourist trips!). The beach front area at Sunset Bungalows was really nice with plenty of huge sun shades and beach chairs - to me it looked like the nicest out of all the places in Kendwa. The beach is beautiful when you are looking out to sea but less so when you look back at the shore as it is quite overdeveoped and there are some prettty ugly resorts there. It is also the place where we encountered the most touts on the beach.

The breakfast was not great - toast (sometimes stale), eggs (mostly very overcooked), 3 bits of fruit (nice!) and coffee/tea/juice. It was getting boring after a few days but you can pay for other options. The food in the restaurant was hit and miss - some meals were pretty good while others were pretty average (eg the curry had no flavour). The food at Kendwa Rocks next door was mostly better and cheaper.

They organised an airport pickup for us that seemed reasonable at $50 and it worked out even when we ended up arriving 8 hours later than planned.

One small problem is that they tried to charge us for someone else's restuarant bill on the first morning and took some convincing that it wasn't ours. The only other disadvantage was we heard loud music from the bar into the night on one of the nights when they were holding a party (we didn't hear anything from Kendwa Rocks on Saturday when they were suposedly holding a party).

Overall I'd definately recommend Sunset Bungalows and Kendwa beach!

This is the perfect place to stay if you want to experience Kendwa in its entire splendor. We stayed in the beach bungalows and these rooms are literally on the beach and everywhere you walk you'll find sand between your toes. The bar serves the BEST mojitos on Zanzibar and the view of the sunset with a mojito in hand s one of my best memories of my stay at sunset bungalows. The breakfast was nothing special, but filling nonetheless. This is a great place to stay if you want to be close to the parties at Kendwa Rocks next door, but prefer to go home for some peace and quiet after a long night of partying!

Stayed here for 8 days. There was power outages constantly and between 7-9:30pm the A/C got turned off in every room. The food was nothing to write home about and we went to Kendwa Rocks resort beside for a lot of lunches and dinners. The service i guess is the same in all of Zanzibar and it could possibly take, as it did on many of occations 30 to 60 minutes for lunch and if not longer for dinner. The free breakfast was enough for a child but not an adult, all portions were very small, stir fry was the biggest plate. Everything was extra (internet, game of pool) so after a couple of days were looking for alternate places to stay but because it was Christmas season everywhere was booked. Paid 90USD per night and really didnt think that it was worth it.
The beach was one of the best beaches that I have seen, looked like a postcard for sure. weather was 80 degrees every day and rained at night, was absolutely fantastic. Watch out that everyone is trying to get their share of your money.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 71, but try to get something that is closer to the water as there is only 1 restauran...

Stayed here for 2 nights, a bit more expensive than others, but a great place to stay on the white sand beach. Very clean and nice. We found the food was very good at the restaurant/bar. The bartenders here didn't give change, unless asked for, so we went next door for cheaper drinks at the Kendwa Rocks.

Right by beach, like most of the other resorts in the area. It’s right next to Kendwa Rocks, which is a little cheaper – though I cannot comment on their facilities. I was set up in one of the newer bungalows which did not feel quite full/ready. There are only two thin sheets on the bed (each covering about half the bed), meaning you either have no blanket or no cover sheet. Not ideal, in my view. The room was good sized and comfortable overall. Helpful staff at front desk. The free breakfast takes place at the restaurant by the beach, though it’s very limited and not very filling – you can pay extra to get extra stuff. There is a SCUBA diving center on site.

My newer room also lacked a deposit box, which other rooms had, so I do not hold that against the place as a whole. The water also had a metallic taste and smell, which was probably due to the new pipes -- not drinking it; you could smell it in the running faucet and shower. So those are things to be careful about with the new rooms.

There is a shuttle that goes into Stone Town daily at 10am from the hotel – seems to be independently operated. It was $10US one-way. While they might pick you up to come back (they did for me), if they do not have enough riders, they might not do the return trip, which they would normally do at 4pm, but can vary depending on the driver. Drive time is over an hour each way.

There is apparently a beach party in the Sunset restaurant on Fridays. A beach party occurs at the adjacent Kendwa Rocks on Saturdays.

Overall, a good place to stay in the area. There are lots of touts in the area, but that's almost expected in the whole country. Kendwa Rocks next door has a good tourist / activities desk.

This place is being rebuild. Some of the rooms still have a smell of fresh paint and look very good, some have seen much better times. So make sure to see the room before and choose carefully. Location is great, some of the cottages are directly at the beach. Also I must mention their best efforts to make it safe here - there have been several security guys around all the time and they even watch over your belongings at the beach.
On the downside - breakfasts are more than simple - 3 pieces of fuit per person and eggs. After couple of days, you'll get sick of it. Also for the lunch and dinner options - we ended up going to other places, the food wasn't wery good over here.

I was left with a mixed feeling from the sunset bungalows. I stayed in a beach side bungalow.

Location is brilliant if you just want to relax. Straight on the beach which is white sand and clear water, everything you expect from a beach in Zanzibar. There is a small cafe serving drinks and food and parasols with beds on the beach.

The bungalow itself was nice, a nice sized bed in a good size room. A/C rooms are available (need to request). The rooms are in nice settings, like a beach garden.

Breakfast was poor. Included in the price is eggs the way you like it cooked with often stale bread, a couple pieces of fruit and coffee and juice. You can get a cooked breakfast for 12,000tsh.

Some staff were quite friendly whilst others (especially in the cafe) were just rude and didn't even smile or say Hello.

Security was pretty poor at dealing with the beach boys, they still approached tourists and the security guards would just sit there and do nothing. A firm "no I'm not interested" will usually get them away. Don't buy anything (tour or items) from anyone on the beach!!

There are often power cuts but they have a generator which powers at least the ceiling fan (not a/c). Usually the power is back on after an hour or so. It costs about $45-50 for transfer from airport. Get the hotel to sort it for you so you have a reputable driver to collect you at the airport.

Overall it was OK, but it was just too expensive for what it was (recently raised their prices). I met some others who had stayed at some bungalows at a resort just up from the sunset and said it was much better quality at a much better rate. Basically have a look at all the accommodation options before choosing Sunset.
