“Bad overall experience here”
Reviewed 20 February 2013

Just as a note, this was actually my third visit to Kendwa and my second stay at this facility, so I would consider myself someone knowledgeable about the area and the quality of the nearby offerings. I would rank my first stay as decent, but overall, our stay at Sunset this time around (December 2012) was miserable and I would not stay here again.

For one thing, prices have increased, and honestly the price requested for the quality of the rooms you end up with is really poor. I'm not picky about where I stay and don't mind a place that is average or even run-down, as long as I'm paying for the rooms to be in that condition. Here, our room was rustic to say the least, plenty of gaps for creepy crawlies and kind of dirty.

Service started out on a rocky note, as our safe did not work, and I had to call reception for help. We ended up being assisted by a grouchy woman. Later at dinner, we received more cold

Firstly, there are NO signs for this place! Possibly because they want you to pay the extortionate $50 for a ferry pick up. If you're making your own way there take the turning for kendwa rocks or white sands as it's between those two. I stayed with friends in a triple fan room so for the price we paid we didn't expect much and the room was fine. Our friends splashed out on an a/c room but the generator ran out of diesel overnight so they ended up with not even a fan and weren't offered a discount or apology! The beach is stunning so if you are looking for a place just to lie on the beach, sunset is great. The bar area is also nice with lots of sofas and a pool table. The service is hit and miss and the breakfast is nothing special. Foodwise I was most disappointed that their 'fresh juice' is a powder mixed with water - there's no excuse for that on Zanzibar! We were also there on a Friday night and it was pretty seedy with lots of older guests disappearing down the beach with young Zanzibaris (female and male)... I felt very uncomfortable dancing as there were so many beach boys just waiting for their next target! All in all sunset is cheap and cheerful and good for the beach.

Nothing in the menu is special. It's actually pretty bad!! Price is ridiculous. A fruit platter = 10,000 Tsh, while fruit salad of similar amount and concoction is half the price at Kendwa Rocks. Cocktails/drinks are also much cheaper elsewhere.

Beware of some bad rooms.

Staffs are friendly and the service is good.

"+"
- Very good beach. White sand, clear blue water. Really wonderful.

"-"
- Electricity outages every day (3-4 times a day)
- Rooms are very old and some sockets didn't work. Old and a bit rusted bathrooms.
- Food for breakfast (included in the price) was the worst I've ever had. Very small portion of fried egg with 2 toasts. Had to go to Kendwa Rocks to get some good food.
- Beach is public, so there are lot's of locals offering you numerous things. Really annoying. It's impossible just to go the the beach and relax.
- Lot's of cafes, discos, shops on the beach. For us it was a minus.
- Overall Zanzibar service was really poor. You don't get what you pay for and some better hotels are clearly overpriced. Locals seems to be very lazy. Imho, if you go to Asia, then you'll get much more better service for better price.

This is my 2nd time in Kendwa, I picked sunset bungalows over Kendwa rocks as its so much better.... Kendwa rocks is more budget room and I personally don't think you get value for money. Sunset bungalows have some fantastic large rooms with lots of space. We had 73 and 74 (double and triple) the rooms towards the back are much better. They are newer so everything works and the bungalows closer to the beach have the disadvantage of music until 2/3am coming from the bars on the beach. Room 73 & 74 have awesome air conditioning (a lovely luxury after sun-baking all day) a small fridge is also a lovely bonus.
The reception stuff are not 100% clued up and you need to confirm things 2 or 3 times before you feel confident they have understood your request.
Food at the bikini bar is nice if not a little pricy. But very chilled and beers are 3500 (happy hour 3000) cocktails are terrible.... Served in small plastic cups, they don't really give you that happy cocktail beach experience. If you are on a budget then venture out and along to FISHERMAN'S restaurant at the end of the strip of shops. Food is amazing and much cheaper, a firm favourite with locals and people in the know.
You will always find a party, Kendwa rocks is right next door and I'm sure you will find yourself strolling back and forth between the two bars.
WIFI is available from either the scubadoo dive center next to the bar or at Kendwa rocks. It's about 2000 for 15min.
If you are a diver then check out scubadoo. Fantastic staff and they have some of the best equipment around. Awesome diving spots as well!!
Enjoy and don't forget to check out FISHERMAN'S restaurants (calamari is amazing)

Room Tip: Rooms 73/74 are fantastic.... No sea views, but at the end of the day I'd rather have a lovely r...

Kendwa is a truly beautiful areas. The bungalows we stayed in was close to the beach, clean and fairly new. All bungalows had mosquito nets, fans and aircon, although some worked better than other. The rooms at the top close to reception looked a bit dingy so try and get the bungalows closer to the beach. The restaurant serves good food but is more expensive than many of the other restaurants in the area. If you want a beach bed during the day you better get there early. People "book" them by by leaving a towel on them and often you never see anyone on the "booked" chair for most of the day.

We rate Kendwa as being the best beach on Zanzibar and Sunset Bungalows definitely the best place to stay. One of the biggest benefits of that side of the island is the fact that you can swim all day and you wont encounter sea urchins. We could snorkel very close to the beach and feel completely safe. The newer rooms are spacious but do lack a bit of character. Everything was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast is nothing to get excited about but the beach bar is lovely and the other food they serve delicious. Sunset has a beach party on a Friday eve and on Saturdays the action moves to the neighbouring Kendwa Rocks. We wouldnt want to stay there as it gets quite noisy.

Room Tip: Ask for the newer seaside rooms with aircon.
