Hi Glen G
Thanks very much for a 5 star review. Pongwe is indeed the perfect place to relax after a strenuous but rewarding Kili climb- well this is what we aim for anyway!
We hope you get the chance to visit us again one day.
I stayed here for 7 nights after 5 day safari on mainland..was just perfect for relaxation
The staff are very friendly and helpful
The location is just great with beautiful beach, tropical gardens and beach front cottage had great views and sound of rolling waves
A nice touch was the provision of bathrobe, beach basket and sarong in the rooms;also although no tea/coffee making facilities,on request are provided outside your room in the morning..a great idea!
Just go for it..you will not be disappointed!
Thanks so much for your lovely review. We try to think of a guests every need while they are here and sometimes, as in your case, it seems like we managed!! We are very lucky to have our magnificent beach and awesome staff.
Please if you are ever in Tanzania again- look us up. Our returning guests all become part of a large Pongwe family.
The rooms are nearly all with direct access (just a couple step) down to the warm sand. No glass in windows (mozzie screens) so the sea breeze goes through the accommodation. Service in the restaurant excellent with very friendly staff. Food good with plenty of choice - locally caught fish etc.
Only draw back is that is in an isolated location about 45 minutes from the airport and Stone Town. No good if you want noisy night-life!
Thanks for your review and valuable feedback. We love the fact that you enjoyed our fresh locally supplied food and that we don't have windows. Your review has been printed for the staff to see the compliment they received.
We are unfortunately very far away from town and any busy night life but also feel very lucky in that we have a perfectly tranquil (mostly!) beach setting far away from people and their busy everyday lives. It makes this a great place to relax and unwind and totally disconnect from the outside world.
Thanks once again, we appreciate your taking the time to write us a review!
If you are looking for a fantastic beach location, we haven't seen a better one in Zanzibar, this is by far the best beach there is. The water is incredible, but do watch for the blue jellyfish which unfortunately sting. I personally got stung by a jellyfish and it felt like my arm was on fire. Fortunately, the local maasai working at the hotel was on site with white vinegar to relieve some of the pain. This hotel has lovely lovely staff in the restaurant and at check in as well. We had a few booking issues and for the short while we talked to the general manager, we did not get the same pleasant feeling from him. It seems water is a major issue for people here, and from reading the reviews it appears that management does not seem to listen to people's complains about the water. It is not at all pleasant to shower and feel sticky after due to the salt water, nor is it visually appealing to see the faucets rusty from the sea water. The rooms here are quite clean, but there is certainly room for improvement. The restaurant offers good food and friendly service. The views everywhere are incredible, especially from the pool. I loved the fact that around 4 PM there is a waiter that goes around offering fresh fruit to guests, it's a very nice touch. I think that with attention to a few minor details, this place itself could reach 5 star status.
Thanks so much for your feedback, its incredibly valuable in order to help us improve. I am so sorry you had a jellyfish encounter, they are terribly painful but luckily they are very uncommon and we only have them around very rarely. We will always be prepared with the vinegar though- just in case!
We have started the new season with a change in management and our booking system is up and running again and hopefully this means no more booking issues.
The owners have been trying for more than 10 years to get fresh water at Pongwe, it is sadly a very very slow process. We are one of the last in line on our road to be supplied with water and the village and school obviously come first. By the time water gets here it is very very limited and we choose to use this for staff house and laundry. We have to truck water in for the kitchen on an almost daily basis. We have finally managed to install a large water storage tank and this will collect rainwater and be filled by us whenever we can to supply rooms etc. Pongwe also does try to be as eco-friendly as possible and there is a huge water shortage in Zanzibar, this is why we have always chosen to use the coral filtered water as shower water. Having said all this we are positive that by the end of the year we will have fresh water in our guest rooms! We have also made sure to replace all our taps and fittings and this will now be done on a regular basis until we solve our brackish water problem. Our housekeepers have also started the season with a fresh outlook and training and we are confident in their abilities to keep the rooms as clean as can be. Fingers crossed with our added attention to detail we will pick up where we fell short on your visit.
Thanks again for your review, please do come back if you get the chance?
Our stay was magnificent. It is an ideal place for those who want to disappear and to stay alone only with the beach, ocean and shells. it is located far separately from any activities or noise . that's why you can only use features and services which hotel provide you with. But if you are looking for hide away - this is the place. Highly reccomend
Thank you very much for this nice review, drop us a line when you feel the need to escape again!
My wife and I spent 6 fabulous days at the Pongwe Beach Hotel and we can't recommend it highly enough. It is located on a quiet stretch of a beautiful white sand beach and is great for a bit of rest and relaxation, but the team at the hotel can organise trips and activities if you wish. The sea is very warm and calm as it is protected by a reef and the infinity pool is also lovely.
The beach front rooms are big and simply furnished and have fans, but it did get quite hot at times. Hammocks and sun loungers are always available and even when there were several other guests it always felt like you were in your own paradise. The free wifi is pretty good in the bar/restaurant, but not so good further away. The food was really good too - the menu changed daily and is limited in choice but we ate really well every day and can highly recommend the seafood platter on the beach.
All of this was really good, but what made the stay really special were the staff as everyone made a huge effort to ensure you wanted for nothing. They also friendly and have a great sense of humour - it was lovely to have a laugh with everyone. We were very sad to leave as we felt like we were part of the family! And if that isn't enough to temp you they even have bush babies that you can feed in the evening.
If you're looking a luxurious, top end place this probably isn't for you, but if you want a home away from home with an idyllic beach, a place to relax, great food & service at good value, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better...
Many thanks for this review, we are glad you had such a pleasant stay and that everything was as you wished, Pongwe Beach Hotel is a special place and if you come here as a guest you will leave here as a friend - or even family!
