“Wonderful, charming La Barde”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

We just stayed for 4 nights in the Veronica room, which was large, spotlessly clean and very comfortable - especially the bed and linens. The hosts, Marie-Christine and Philippe were gracious and extremely helpful, providing weather reports, booking restaurant reservations and making sure our every need was handled. The area is fascinating with caves, rivers, chateaus, and endless sites to see. Highly recommended - both La Barde and the Montfort/Dordogne area. Tres Bien!!

We were at La Barde_Montfort for some days this August. Everything was fantastic, the wellcome, the situation, the views, the garden and specially the kindness of Peter's family. The atmosphere was very nice and we hope all the best to this Guest-House. We wouldn't hesitate in going back again!

Located in the shadows of Montfort Castle this guest house is ideal to visit all the sights of the Dordogne. The accommodation was excellent, spotlessly clean and well furnished. Our host Marie-Christine and Phillipe could not have been more helpful, helping us booking restaurants and the must do Canoe trip down the river. As guests you have the use of a guest kitchen, with a fridge, freezer, oven, hob and micro-wave. There are two BBQs on site with coals and fire lighters provided. You can relax in a large guest lounge with a well stocked library. The breakfast was first class served with endless hot coffee. Our hosts were perfect and put a lot into making sure that you really relax and enjoy yourself. Its one of the best guest houses that we have ever stayed in!

My husband, son, and I stayed in the Veronica room for two nights in July and enjoyed our stay immensely. The house itself is lovely, and the hospitality was unbeatable. Marie-Christine, Phillipe and Laura made us feel at home, and much of their home is open to guests -- including a loft with movies, books, and games, a kitchen that guests can use to store food or make meals, an outdoor barbecue, a garden area, and pool. Phillipe also made dinner reservations for us and gave us great tips on parking in Sarlat and good spots to shop for gift items from the region.

Our room was large and comfortable, and everything was extremely clean. The wi-fi also worked well, which was important to our son! It was extremely hot during our visit, but the room had enough windows that it cooled off pretty well at night. And the pool helped us beat the heat! We also enjoyed our breakfasts, where guests had a chance to chat and share their travel experiences. There was a good variety of breakfast items, including fruits and yogurt, and plenty of coffee!

It would be a shame to stay here less than two nights, simply because it's such a lovely spot. And it would be great for a longer stay, especially because guests can use the kitchen and the outdoor barbecue if they don't want to drive a few miles for dinner or lunch.

My husband and I stayed for 2 weeks at The Bard, Montford, we have nothing but praise for
Marie-Christine, Philippe and Laura, lovely people and very helpful to the point of carrying our cases from the car to our room. We travel a lot and this is by far the best guest house that we have stayed in, very clean and comfortable and a lovely breakfast. We had the use of the kitchen to make tea or keeping our drinks cold in the fridge. Our family and grandchildren were staying nearby in Eurocamp one day they were without water we mentioned this to Philippe he insisted that they could use our facilities. Beautiful countryside, lovely walks and very close to Sarlat. We would definitely recommend the Bard and hopefully we will return next year, Phyllis & George

Room Tip: All rooms are clean and beautiful

This guest house is a real find. The hosts, recently relocated from Belgium, are the ever-enthusiastic Philippe and Marie-Christine and their delightful adult daughter Laura, who helps with translating if help is needed. Our queen bedroom, with excellent bathroom, was immaculate. From our ground-floor bedroom we had an unimpeded view across the garden to historic Chateau de Montfort, just 1km away. The breakfasts were enthusiastically presented. One morning, Marie-Christine offered french toast. Initially we declined, but when she looked a little sad, we accepted. It was a brilliant concoction embellished with raspberries from the garden. Philippe agrees he is a 'maniac' in the fruit and vegetable garden -- we have never seen plants in such straight rows! This is a truly great base for exploring the Dordogne.

Our family of six spent a lovely few days here in July 2012 and liked it so much we booked to go back in 2014. Philippe and Marie-Christine are very attentive hosts and they did everything they could to make our stay an enjoyable one. Philippe even set up our barbecue for us. They gave useful information on the area and were keen to improve and practise their English and we enjoyed practising our French with them. For us, the use of the fridge, kitchen and outside eating areas is what sets this B & B apart from others. We stayed in the Suite Familiale and Jospehine (I think!) which were very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The Suite is ideal for families as there are two separate bedrooms. We usually stay in gites, so having breakfast prepared for us was a treat and there was a good choice and something different every day. The garden and pool are very well kept and the children loved swimming in the pool. La Barde is in a great location for exploring the region. It's near to the Dordogne for paddling and canoeing and very close to Sarlat and Domme and so many other places. We are looking forward to visiting again next year very much.
