We had a wonderful week at Le Petite Vigneron in Capestang. The town is a terrific base, right on the Canal du Midi, to explore the surrounding area, including Carcassone, Mirepoix, Minerve, and Narbonne.

The accommodation provided all the comforts of home and the decor was tasteful and cosy. The kitchen was well supplied and it was easy to prepare meals. However eating out was easy too as there are plenty of good eateries in town. The market on Wednesday was a wonderful experience and good to buy local produce.

Jan and David were friendly hosts, there if required, but otherwise invisible. On our arrival they invited us for a chilled wine, which was a very special way to meet them, and discuss the attractions of the area. It was great to have off street parking and a beautiful garden, where one could relax with a book and a drink.

Although not a problem for us, the only negative could be access to the apartment, which is up a steep ladder-type staircase. It would not be suitable for the elderly, and difficult if suitcases are heavy.

we've tried every possible way to improve the stairway, but, as this was a wine- making building before being a house, it has 6 old "cuves" where wine was stored. These are made of reinforced concrete and if we tried to remove them we'd probably bring the whole house down, so sadly the steep staircase has to stay. We have to say that most people don't find it a problem and we do warn about it in our advert.

We had a wonderful stay at "Le Petit Vigneron". All the home comforts with nice touches which made all the difference. As we stayed 2 weeks, it was great to have for instance a washing machine with supply of soap and softener. The flat was immaculate; assorted vast towels, welcome pack of goodies in the fridge inc a delicious bottle of wine: nothing was too much trouble for our charming hosts, Jan and David.
The flat is situated in a quiet street, close to the Canal du Midi, with a lovely view from our windows unto the mediterranean private garden and the collegiale (church). Our great pleasure was to walk to the market held twice a week in Capestang's main square and sample the melons, fruit etc. There are several good restaurants in the village and it's a good base to visit the area without doing too much mileage.

“ideally situated”

As others have said this house is very well equipped and there is a warm welcome from Jan and David. It is ideally situated in a large village with plenty of shops ,restaurants and mod cons but still in a rural setting with the canal on the doorstep for evening strolls. Coast , Mountains and the larger cities are only a short drive away. Minor discomfort was that the loungers were not comfy for reading.

It is a shame about the loungers, we buy new mesh ones every season as they tend to dry out in the sun and become brittle. We have tried plastic and wood, but both need cushions and sadly we have found that, if it rains, our guests don't always bring the cushions indoors, so they rot! I'd welcome ideas to solve this problem!

“Great destination, great hospitality.”
Reviewed 24 May 2013 for a stay in May 2013

Had a lovely time at the Petit Vigneron with my wife and 2 year old daughter. Capestang is a charming little place with just enough cafes and restaurants to offer a bit of variety yet small enough to have a relaxed atmosphere. Jan and David were impeccable hosts and genuinely made us feel really welcome. Whether that be giving us advice on local sights or inviting out for a glass of wine (or two!), nothing is too much trouble.Despite being friendly and approachable they also gave us plenty of space to enjoy our gite and our holiday. Capestang is also a great base to explore the region, and we managed to day trip to Carcassone, Montpelier, Minerve and many other lovely places, all within fairly easy driving distance. There is also a choice of beaches within about half an hours drive, all of which we found quite pleasant. the gite itself is well presented and the sun terrace has a lovely view of the village church.

I can honestly not think of anything to fault our experience of the Petit Vigneron.

“Perfect base in a wonderful area of France!”

We have just returned from our 2 week holiday in Le Petit Vigneron and wish we were still there!
Jan & David are the perfect hosts, who are very knowledgable of Capestang and the surrounding area. If you need any help at all, from information on the local restaurants or visits to the wine merchants, they will happily oblige.
We used this as a base to see surrounding villages and visit various beaches. At this time of year there are plenty of village fetes in full flow. We arrived on Bastille Day and it was unbelievable! There were some fantastic Fireworks just behind the gite on the Canal Du Midi in Capestang port and then some wonderful music in the local square, so our holiday got off to a flying start!
We also managed to see the fete at Sallales D'Aude, where they had jousting on the Canal de Robine, which was great fun for the children taking part!
Capestang itself, is a lovely town. There is all you could want there, from the larger supermarkets on the edge of town, Intermarche & Lidl, to the smaller ones in the village. Within a couple on minutes of the gite are a boulangerie, pharmacist, cafes & restaurants.
There are some beautiful villages up and down the Canal du Midi and just walking along it was so peaceful & calming. We took a boat trip at Homps, which is not to be missed if you want to see more of it from the water. In Capestang you could also hire a small boat from an hour for about €30. Our boat trip was €12 each.
The area is quite windy, which is cooling when you need it, but on the sandy beaches of Serignan Plage & Le Franqui, could be slightly too much unless you have chairs. We like Sete, as the beach was less fine, so didn't cause an issue if it was windy. Also the we're several cafes/bars which have wonderfully comfy sunbeds! Our favourite was ACD.
Overall, we had a wonderful relaxing time and would definitely return both to Capestang & Le Petit Vigneron!
If you are thinking of coming to the area, don't hesitate in choosing both this village and this accommodation.

We had a wonderful week's holiday at Le Petit Vigneron in Capestang. The apartment is perfect in every way. Comfortable, well furnished rooms, plenty of kitchen equipment and a beautiful terrace. The lovelyvillage is just a few minutes walk away and has all necessary facilities. A minutes walk from the apartment, in the opposite direction, is the canal du midi where bikes and boats can be hired.
Jan and David are perfect hosts. Take advantage of their advice regarding restaurants and places to visit. You won't be disappointed.
A great place to visit and relax in a totally unspoilt area of France

A lovely apartment very close to the Midi Canal, and 2 minutes walk from the center of the village. Well appointed, with everything needed. Garden is lovely. Private terrace is idyllic. Steep ladder-like stairs up to the apartment were intimidating at first, but we soon got used to them.

Issues with booking were limited to issues getting the appropriate funds wired internationally - every step of the way our banks tried to thwart us with hidden fees, so that all of the monies weren't properly transferred. As far as booking with Jan - nothing could have been easier.

Owners/Hosts Jan and David are wonderful, with lots of great ideas - follow their recommendations, and you'll never go wrong!

We spent 2 wonderful weeks there, and were sorry to leave our "home" in Capestang at the end. We look forward to going back.

we upgrade and improve our gite constantly, but we can't change the staircase, there isn't the headroom as this building was a wine-making building and still has the old "cuves" which held the wine. These are extremely solid and would need a bulldozer to get them down - might not be good for the rest of the house!!!
