We were driving all the way from Brussels to Etretat and reached there on 15/08/2014 evening. When we reached there all the parking slots were full, but they have provided a ground with 'Free parking". The distance from this parking slot to main beach area is around 2 kms.We spent that evening in the beach. The beach with Pebble stones was spectacular, a bit crowded as its peak summer. The beach was clean with all the facilities and lots of activities including paragliding, windsurfing etc.The next day morning we climbed one of the cliffs. There is a parking at the cliff in front of the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde.Those who don't want to climb can use that way.Don't forget to use good walking shoes and also you have to carry water and food. The views are just amazing. When we went the weather was good.We spent almost three hours there. At a point you will see a flight of steps leading towards the cliff's bottom. Its a bit strenuous but in between there are good view points. In the afternoon we climbed the second cliff(The Manneporte).
The views were excellent especially when the colour of the see and sky changes in the evening.
A walk through the old town is also really nice. There are plenty of restaurants too. There is a shop which sells various salted fishes (tuna, sardines etc) prepared in their own traditional way and also spreads for breads made out of the same. You can taste and buy. I think its a popular one there. Etretat and its cliffs are a worth to visit.

The view was spectacular. Must walk to the top. Lots of photo ops. Must walk up a lot of steps to get to the top. Take your time. Town was nice, lots of shops.

It is a nice walk up, good views, but not different from many other places nearby. Just more tourists.

As inhabitants of continental Europe, we know the "white cliffs of Dover" very well. Maybe less well known, but easily understandable, is that the Earth's surface continues in the same way across the English Channel, and that France presents itself with an extensive range of chalkstone cliffs, such as Les 2 Caps (Blanc Nez and Gris Nez), and, beyond the Somme's estuary in Normandy, with the cliffs of Fécamp and Etretat. The falaise d'Etretat is a miracle of nature that inspired many impressionists, and nowadays attracts many tourists, so that traffic in this small town can be quite congested. The smart way out is to go to Notre Dame de la Garde, a church located on top of the cliff North of Etretat, that offers a beautiful view on the tunnel-shaped and spire-formed cliff. Beware that the climb uphill is steep (15%!), so that you may need a similar courage to go up as the French pioneer pilots Nungesser and Coli had. These pilots are commemorated with a beautiful statue next to the Notre Dame church. Church and statue are already visible from the village below.
