“Typically French Auberge worth consideration”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2013

The snow drifts were above the car when we arrived at the auberge, but we were given a very warm welcome. The rooms are separate from the main building. Very old property, but our room was very warm, clean and spacious. Large well apppointed bathroom, separate loo. Lovely antique furnishings and clean comfortable bed. Gardens unique - lots of animals and birds. Would be lovely in summer. Large off road car park but quite a walk to the rooms with the luggage for somebody with mobility difficulties although the owner was more than willing to help with carrying bags. Off the beaten track, lovely countryside yet close to Rouen. We booked for Bed breakfast and evening meal. Were not offered a menu, just a couple of choices for each course, but we enjoyed to quirky dinning room and great log fire. Dog was most welcome

Our room was small but comfortable and pretty (pink toile de Jouy wallpaper & curtains) although getting a little shabby now. It is also up some outside wooden stairs - tricky if you have much heavy baggage or are elderly - or it's raining) We disliked the caged birds and chickens all over the garden - a bit smelly and noisy, but perhaps that's just personal taste. The food was excellent, both dinner and breakfast in our room. Slightly pricy for what it offers (90 euros). Our main complaint was that there was no hot water in the morning in either the shower or the washbasin. We mentioned this on checking out and were told that the boiler had broken down but we were not given any reduction, which we thought pretty poor. This was our second visit but we probably wouldn't go back a third time.

At €90 per night for the room we were expecting a little better. A quaint room in a quaint building, away from the main property through a very pretty garden. Our room, room 3, was quite dusty and very dark. A separate toilet and bathroom were well appointed and clean. We had booked on a half board basis. We did not realise that this precluded ANY menu choice, and were presented with 3 uninspiring courses. An indeterminate fish terrine and a grossly undercooked duck, even on Masterchef standards. We forwent the cheese course so had a choice of desert. Again, uninspiring. At €38 per head, overpriced in our opinion. Strangely enough, we would go back, eat from the a la carte, and again enjoy the location and the superior service and attention we were given. PS A great wine list.

We stayed for one night to break a journey from Wales to the Lot, so I wanted somewhere quiet and relaxing and for one of our party on her first visit to France to get a favourable impression.
It was difficult to find and took some time with Google maps to get an approximate location. It would be very helpful when locating an isolated building like this, especially in the days where many cars have sat nav, if establishments included geographical waypoints in their details.
It's a lovely old coaching-inn in the heart of the Caux in Normandy and owner Jerôme Carel and his wife made us feel most welcome.
We had ground floor rooms in the old building in the garden, which were charming and quiet as there was almost no traffic on the quiet country road alongside. A drink outside in the lovely garden before dinner started the evening well. The food in the restaurant, whilst well cooked and prepared is, as so often in France, rather short on vegetables and I thought that the burger for my 4 year-old was almost like a steak tartare, so not very appropriate for a child.
Breakfast was excellent and overall a perfect start to our holiday. I'll definitely return

We booked this hotel as a stopover, based on reviews that we had read, and were not disappointed. The hotel is full of character and we'd definitely return again. The auberge is in a lovely setting although alongside a minor road. Sitting out in the garden with a drink is wonderfully relaxing. Rooms are priced at 90 Euros which seemed about the 'norm' for our trip and we thought represented good value for money. Because we stayed on Sunday night the fixed menu wasn't available and so ate a la carte - a bit more expensive but the meal was very enjoyable. We have now realised that this is the norm for France - set menus are normally not available at weekends or bank holidays. Service was always pleasant and helpful and our room, on the ground floor of the garden house, was comfortable though suffered from a little noise from the room above and from the birds in the early morning!
NB Directions to the hotel are not as clear as they could be but using Google Earth before our trip enabled us to work out that the Auberge is much nearer to Freville than it is to Yvetot and driving from Freville towards Yvetot along the D5 made finding the hotel quite easy.

Everything suggested this would be a fabulous overnight - lush vegetation in a gorgeous garden filled with exotic birds; a separate five-bedroomed timbered structure in the garden; interesting menu; warm greeting and attentive staff. However.... incredibly hard to find (SatNav and map together no help) rooms turned out to be thin-walled and noisy, neighbours movements and voices apparent; traffic also intrusive; dinner over-priced and disappointing (other than great bread with rich butter and a pleasing breakfast). Overall, plain disappointing.

It was raining and so the garden area with its penned birds lacked a bit of magic but the accommodation at the bottom of the garden was fine. We had a room on the first floor, which meant that we had to climb some relatively steep outside wooden steps - maybe a problem for some. The bedroom was fine with toile du jour material covering the walls. The bathroom and toilet were I thought pretty tired and in need of replacement although they were clean.

Dinner in the restaurant was very nice. The downstairs area is quite small and L shaped. The tables are in a single row around the room so that you do not feel too penned in by anyone. Service was excellent as was the food. Unlike other places we have stayed in France there were limited fixed price options. I think there was a single fixed price menu although it was not obvious to me. We ate a la carte. This was really good.

Breakfast was also excellent.

Having been here once and experienced the hotel I don’t think I would chose to return but would recommend it once to anyone and if we ever went back with friends would doubtless enjoy the experience.
