We took the walk down to the water from Oia and we were sure glad that we did. The service was great and our fish was delicious. The views of the water were amazing. The hike back up to Oia with a full stomach wasn't as bad as we thought it would be.

The Sunset Tavern, recommended by Alex our porter for lunch, is at the end of Amoudi Bay,several hundred steps below the clifftop of Oia. Rather than walk down the steep and winding staircase we took a cab...quicker and, despite the hairpins, safer (we saw two people slip and fall on the staircase and a third suffering palpitations within five minutes. It would be interesting to know how many claims travel insurance companies pay out for injuries on Santorini's cliffsides). To reach Sunset we had to negotiate our way between the tables of half a dozen other restaurants, a little daunting at first but quickly seemed natural...to their credit none of the staff of preceding venues attempted to badger us to take a table with them. We must have been obviously Australian, for just as we reached the entrance we were greeted by a gentleman who spoke perfect Oz (he'd worked for several years in Sydney), seated, offered a beer and assisted in selecting a crisp Greek wine which closely resembled a Hunter Semillon. Kostas invited us to select our fish, taking us to a chilled cabinet containing the day's catch, discussed the merits of the various options and arranged a first course of sardines, bread, olive oil, balsamic, etc...plus, of course, an outstanding Greek salad.
We chose a table near a wall of the restaurant rather than one on the very edge of the crystal clear water (yes, right on the edge. Braver souls sat there and none fell in, but with our luck discretion seemed the wiser course.. Those who like living on the edge would, however, certainly enjoy it and I'm sure it's safer than the steps. )
The sardines were great (although P thought there may have been too many) and our main fish course even better. Once again we agreed Greek chefs can certainly cook fish!
I've spent enough of my life adventuring and now figure if you're on a good thing it's best to stick to it, so we returned to Sunset for dinner and were not disappointed. We arrived while it was still daylight and watched the sun go down behind a cliff across the bay: an impressive site made all the more enjoyable by another great meal and excellent bottle of Santorian white.
A number of locals told us the best restaurants were at Amoudi Bay, although we tried only Sunset, though it looked as though any of the others would not disappoint. Thoroughly recommended...but take a cab. The restaurants will arrange another for your return.

If you want a picturesque setting, this is it. Right on Amoudi Bay at the bottom of the cliffside of Oia. When we were there, it was a partial sunset view (the sunset disappeared behind a cliff and not into the water), but was still extremely nice and beautiful. If you go, just go to enjoy the setting. The food was fine, but nothing special in preparation. Warning - if you don't like seafood, this is not your place as there are not many other options. The service, well, the service is inattentive and beating to their own drum. They didn't seem to be listening to our order, and, sure enough, didn't follow it.

Great, location, well cooked food, badly let down by poor quality service and over inflated prices. At first glance this place had all the potential to deliver a special meal for our last night in Oia. However, what we found were unhelpful staff who were unwilling to do anything except take your order. This is perhaps understandable if you are ordering in a taverna, however, when the special lobster comes in at 95 euros this really is not acceptable. Also disappointing was the fact that many if the seafood on offer such as the mussels and the prawns were frozen and bought in from the North of Greece- surely better to write not in season than to offer frozen food from another area right down by the shore!? It is obvious with a captive market and a great location this place does not need to try very hard.

This was our favorite meal the entire time we were in Greece. My husband and I shared the lobster spaghetti, and it was just delicious! The sauce is some kind of orange pesto to die for, and the ambiance of this restaurant is unforgettable. The walk down the steep steps was part of the fun - walk down the steps to get here, and take a taxi home!
