“Worth treking down (and up) the steps”
Reviewed 23 September 2013

This taverna on the Ammoudi Port was recommended by our hotel owner so we decided to brave the steps in time for lunch.

On our descent the donkeys were heading down which was fun to see but there is no mistaking the general smell that they generate!

Katina is one of around 5 tavernas on the waterfront but we felt that its white and orange decor lent it a somewhat more touristy feel than some of its rustic themed counterparts. We ordered Greek salad and fresh fish - both of which were excellent although even by Greek standards the service was laid back.

Just be prepared that the walk back up can be hard going (after a big lunch and beer) - but it took less than 20mins - complete with stops to look at the view and catch our breath.

“Beautiful location, overpriced food”
Reviewed 20 September 2013

We decided to have a lunch at Katina's, and not feeling overly hungry settled on calamari with Greek salad ... They do try to upgrade you to fish ... View was wonderful, food was ok. Overpriced in my personal opinion. I wouldn't/couldn't pay over £100 for one meal (just mains!)

“Katina's Ammoudi Bay”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

I have just had the worst dining experience of my life at Katina's in Ammoudi Bay. After making the effort to traverse the 240 steps from Oia down to the Bay myself and my wife were eagerly anticipating a dining experience to remember. The wait staff were friendly and helpful in seating us and assisting with selection of a suitable fish for dinner. The fish was delivered on a platter and after being cooked over hot coals it was then butterflied and placed on a platter. This meant that the pin bones had been broken from the backbone so every mouthful of fish contained pin bones and was to the point inedible. It did not allow you to remove the backbone complete with pin bones so you could eat the fish without the worry of choking on bones. As disappointing as this was to have a 75euro fish ruined it was nothing in comparison to the reaction from the staff when a complaint was made. Other than the one waiter who understood the issue the rest did not and were hostile in response. They did not want to understand the issue, nor rectify it and the standard response was we have been doing this for 63 years so therefore we must be right. The end result was we paid 50euros for a few mouthfuls of salad and a glass or two of house wine and left. Disappointing is an understatement the attitude of the senior staff had to be seen to be believed . A shared cab ride with a young couple back to Oia revealed similar experience at Sunset Restaurant but they were 100euros worse off. I would have to say that these restaurants have become complacent and rely on the beauty of the bay to paper over the cracks. In this instance there was no focus on the customer experience at all it was presumed that it had to be all right. They have 63yrs of experience so they must be right.

“Donkey turds and fine food”
Reviewed 17 September 2013 via mobile

Whilst visiting Santorini my wife and I decided to walk down the couple of hundred steps to Amoudi to sample the local seafood. In truth the walk down was not that demanding, the hardest part was dodging the donkey turds. Mind you I wouldn't blame the local nags, hey work hard and can toilet where they like! On arriving at the bottom we easily found a waterside table with a sunset view and settled in for the gastronomic delights. This place is well organised the sommelier was very helpful and helped us select a bottle of local wine (not the dearest on the wine list). Then the waiter guided us in the direction of the food. We decided on the Lobster Spaghetti and the Fish Roe Salad. Naturally, these choices were not cheap but I didn't feel we were steered in there direction for profit reasons. When the Fish Roe Salad arrive we found it to be a light, fresh entree that was just the right amount. The Lobster Spaghetti was sublime. The lobster was cooked beautifully and the spaghetti was magnificent. The spaghetti was al dente and covered in a cream rose sauce. The food was a great match for the food. The only negatives were that the evening was quite windy and that cooled the dishes down meaning they were cold by the end. The other problem was that the meat ink claws and spiders of both lobsters was quite dry and uninviting - not sure how that would happen. The service was very good and friendly. The only other thing to consider is the trip back up the hill. All we can say is its not that hard if you take frequent breaks. The view is fantastic and well worth the effort.

“Get the lobster spaghetti”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

We walked down from our hotel to the bay which was a good 15 minute walk. Referred to tavern Katina by the Nostos Apartments, we found the restaurant to be very enjoyable.

We started with a Greek salad and split the lobster spaghetti. I have to say it was amazing, and incredibly fresh, literally straight from the sea. Cooked to perfection and served by a friendly staff.

Make a booking as the venue is quite popular.
