“Amazing Place to Stay. Stunning Sunsets”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2009

We really liked Perivolas and were glad we opted for staying here for
3 nights rather than at Katikies (the other place we considered). The
cave house we booked was very cozy and charming. The staff and the
service were top notch and very friendly. I don't think you can
expect any less if you're willing to shell out some serious clams for
staying at a place like Perivolas. Certainly unique and not anything
you probably have ever stayed in. The place
exudes a quiet luxury. Just relaxing by the pool and enjoying the
scenery is blissful. The property is very quiet.

One downside of these cave rooms is it got kind of humid at night. Not so humid to where it became uncomfortable, but it was still noticeable. The A/C unit didn't really help that much (got coooler, but still humid). I think this is due to the fact that moisture from the shower doesn't vent out and also because the room is a cave. Also, this is compounded by the fact that the bathroom area can get very wet (no shower curtain). Some might also find the houses a bit clastrophobic, because
these dwellings are carved into the cliffside. but this may all
depend on the type of the house you get.

The sunsets were spectacular here. I disagree that Fira's sunset is
better--yes it's more central, but with part of Oia in the backdrop
the view provides for a spectacular canvas of colors and hues. Our best sunset pictures were taken from right outside our room's balcony.

Another fellow traveller made a comment that she didn't feel like Perivolas nickel and dimed her--and I agree.

There's free wireless (though you need to be in the public area/hotel office to get reception...suppose the cave walls are too thick) in the main office which also houses a small collection of books (mainly from previous travelers--we left a book there too) and a desktop PC with Internet. There's a nice little work out gym with free weights etc and a suana room. The bar/eating room has a basket of fresh fruits (apples, pears, bananas and plums) you can eat.
Breakfast is delicious and you can them send it up to your outside balcony to eat.

This place is very soothing. We could have spent days just lounging around reading a book and drinking cocktails at this property. This place has a very charming quaint feel to it. I feel it was well worth the extra price, but having to pay in cash or traveller's check was an inconvenience. The people that work at this property are all fantastic and super friendly. All of them seem to have wonderful attitudes and excellent customer service. Rhea, Kelly, Madja (though sadly never got to meet her in person), Philia, the bartender, and the chick who speaks espanol were all very helpful.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Perivolas, holding our wedding ceremony on the second night. We had already had 3 wonderful nights at Pantelia Suites in Fira, so it was difficult to imagine that Perivolas could be much better...weren't we surprised! Our room was spacious and exuded sexiness from every angle. It was obvious no corners had been cut during renovations, and the minimalist decor fit Oia to a T. The paint was the most soothing shade of white, and the antiques fit the mood perfectly. The floors were finished in the most odd way. Some sort of (concrete?) treatment in a green/gray...really lovely and special.

Staff was very lovely, making omelettes to order, bringing pitchers of cold water to you poolside, even lemon sorbet in the most wonderful mini-martini glasses.

Don't even get me started on the pool...too wonderful for words!

You must go to Santorini, you must book in Oia, and you must stay at Perivolas!

*Sidenote...if this is your first trip to Santorini, a night or two in Fira makes it easy to see the sights at the southern end of the island. Oia is a sight in itself and not to be missed, but it is quite a distance from Red Beach, Akrotiri, and the black beaches. Might not hurt to split your time!

It was our 10 year anniversary and we finished in Santorini. It was a gorgeous hotel. Pricey but well worth it. Our view was amazing and with
the infinity pool, you felt like you could see to the ends of the earth. The last night we had dinner at a table set for us with votive candles overlooking the cliffs of Santorini , with the sun setting , it was a memorable moment!

GETTING THERE:
We took the ferry from the port of Piraeus to Santorini my advice is to make your reservations early as it’s nearly impossible to get tickets last minute. Perivolas sent a car to pick us up which arrived on time and was very comfortable. It was about a 25-30 minute drive from the port to Oia.
LOCATION:
The location of Perivolas is worth the cost alone! It features a huge panorama of the caldera! The pictures don’t do it justice! Perivolas is about a 5 minute walk from downtown Oia.
AMBIANCE:
Perivolas is extremely relaxing. It is paradise! It is very peaceful.
HOTEL:
At the top of the property is the main building where you check in. There is also wireless internet and a computer (if you don’t have a laptop) if you choose to catch up with the real world. At the center of the hotel is their famous and spectacular infinity pool. They also have a restaurant that serves a beautiful buffet breakfast in the morning and a great menu for dinner. There is a hot tub directly below the infinity pool as well as a workout area and small spa.
SERVICE:
The hotel staff is friendly and gets to know everyone of their guests by name. They are all professional and respectful and were able to arrange for any activities or reservations we requested.
ROOM:
Each room or cave is built into the hillside. The doors, beds, couch, closets and showers are carved out of the rock. Each cave has a kitchenette with a coffee maker and water boiler. They have a large refrigerator with bottled water. They also provide fresh fruit and a bottle of sweet liquor upon arrival.
The bathrooms were the only downside of the cave. We didn’t have a problem with water from the shower but the chemical toilets took some getting use to. There are also no electrical outlets in the bathroom and the mirror is very small. There are electrical outlets in the main room but no mirrors outside of the bathroom so blow drying your hair is a challenge! There is a music player in each room however there are no TV’s.
Each room has an outdoor patio area with a table and chairs and a few lounges. Be careful of leaving your doors open as there are several local very friendly cats who like to hide in your rooms.
The cleaning staff cleans your rooms twice a day.
INTERNET:
There is internet in the check in building. No wireless in the rooms.
RESTAURANT/IN ROOM DINING:
There is room service as well as a formal restaurant. Table are set up around the property all with views of the caldera. The food and wine are fantastic! If you choose not to dine with the hotel, the staff can make a reservation for you in the town of Oia or elsewhere on Santorini.
POOL/BEACH:
The pool is beautiful! I can’t think of anything they could improve on. There is not beach access from Oia or anywhere on the caldera side but I personally did not feel like I was missing out. If you are interested in the beach there is a beautiful black stand beach on the other side of the islands (about a 30 minute drive).
SPA/GYM:
I did not use the spa or gym while I was here but I know they offer a selection of services at the spa and the gym has a couple of cardio machines and free weights. If you like to run on the street, there are many low traffic roads that were great to run on as long as you don’t mind the hills!
OVERALL:
I loved Perivolas! This was one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Santorini itself is great and offers something for everyone and Perivolas just put the icing on the cake!

  • Liked — The staff, the view, hotel rooms, the infinity pool, just about everything!
  • Disliked — The chemical toilets, no outlets in the bathroom, and no full length mirror

Being our very first trip to Greece and Santorini, I had wanted a special place to stay for a start. Having considered the Mystique (too many steps), Katikies (older rooms), Adronis Suites (too expensive, and not all rooms are in caves), Perivolas (no TV!) - we have finally picked the Perivolas based on its Tripadvisor ratings and pictures we have seen.

After about 20 hours of travelling, finally arrived on Aegean Airlines at the Santorini airport. The car pick up wasn't there when we had arrived, but lucky us, he was only 5-10 minutes late. Thereafter, the 25-30 minutes drive to Perivolas was fine for us, though there are some blind spots along the way with some twists and turns, its much better than the Amalfi Coast in Italy, that's for sure.

And of course, needless to say, our first impressions of Perivolas was, Wow! What a beautiful place, exactly what was depicted on the pictures ... and more! After less than 30-40 steps of arriving at the Reception and up, we were being brought to our suite number 18, which happens to be right above the reception area.

The suite 18 shares a common terrace with suite 12, which is slightly larger and comes with a bigger terrace and has more windows than our suite 18. However, suite 18 has a lovely window with views of the Aegean Sea, right at the bottom of the bed! Now, that's something to write home about, very special and very romantic indeed!

Now, the goods about this unique hotel - Great views, Infinity Pool, Heated outdoor jacuzzi, Free transfers to/fro airport/port and lovely lovely Common areas. Nice touches in the suite were - free Tea/Coffee making facilities and VinSanto wine. Though the suite (535 euros in the low key) was not huge by any standards, it was nice enough and good for a short stay.

Had we stayed longer than one night, we probably would spring for the Superior suite, number 17, at only 600 euros in the low key (much much better Value than suites, trust me!). Now, this lovely suite is not only relatively larger, it is also more private in the sense that it is at the bottom of the Perivolas (with more steps, of course!), sharing a huge terrace with only one other suite. It also has a non-working fire place and a bathroom with views to the Aegean Sea, now how about that for romantics at heart?

Finally, the bads of this hotel - there was no fruit platter nor biscuits to munch on after such a long tiring flight (and at the rate they charge for such a small suite/cave?), there was only one mirror in the whole suite, mattress was not too comfy and pillows too soft for my liking, breakfast variety too limited for a hotel of this category, and the walk to Oia town was 10-15 minutes, no TV and requires pre-payment by wire transfer.

Regarding quietness, yes, it was generally very quiet at most times. However, being located right above the reception brings some luggages noise (people checking in and out) and a van with a loudspeaker yelling sales of household items (no fault of the Hotel) are intrusive enough for an otherwise very relaxed stay.

We had picked this special hotel to recover from our jet lag, and we were not disappointed. The grounds are simply very well maintained and staff generally courteous, esp. the driver and the barman (sorry, didn't get his name?). After Perivolas, we stayed another two nights at the brand new, Adamis Majesty Suites in Fira (do see my other review).

We will certainly be back at this special Hotel, and wouldn't settle for anything less than suite number 17!

  • Liked — Great views, Infinity pool and Common areas.
  • Disliked — Small terrace, no TV, beds not too comfy.

I cannot imagine a more dramatic or romantic place than Oia. This was the ultimate honeymoon destination. Perivolas, nested on the side of a cliff, captures the essence of the island. We had an incredibly romantic honeymoon here—we were 1 of maybe 10 other couples/honeymooners. The pool, although small, was gorgeous, and there were many different nooks and areas to claim for a day of sunbathing. The breakfast was fantastic—an excellent selection for buffet and then the ability to cook anything else you wanted. The location was also wonderful- just a quick walk down the path to the main area of Oia. The hotel was very friendly in advance of our arrival and throughout our stay. All of that being said, it is important to monitor your expectations at this hotel. It is not modern (there was no TV, the bathroom was quite small), and we have certainly paid far less for much nicer hotels. What you are paying for is your own little secluded cave, away from it all, in the most incredible spot in the world.

  • Liked — VIEW VIEW VIEW, pool, breakfast, service, romance, peacefulness, location
  • Disliked — does not accept credit cards! small bathroom
