We have just returned from a wonderful week staying in the House of the Winemaker. From our first day we were made to feel very welcome and the memory of watching the sun go down over Oia sipping a cocktail will stay with us for a long time. Don't plan to do a lot - you will just want to sit enjoying the view, soaking in the hot tub and if you are felling very energetic climbing the steps to the pool.

I was tempted not to write anything about Ikies, because I'm worried that when we return (and we definitely will!) we won't be able to get a room - or won't be able to afford one! But the staff and owners of Ikies deserve a terrific review - they were unbelievable.

My husband and I spent three nights of our honeymoon at Ikies, in the House of the Carpenter, and if I had known then what I know now, we would have spent a week there!

The Room:

Was incredible. More like a little apartment, with a cute little kitchen, a gorgeous tiled bathroom with separate areas for toilet, shower and steam room, a living room (complete with plasma tv and fantastic laptop with WiFi) and a bedroom with a king bed. Two sets of stairs on either side of the bed led up to a second bath - with two sinks and a sunken jacuzzi tub! Fantastic. The details were terrific - loved the Korres products, the giant cinnamon sticks in a copper pot (which made the room smell fabulous), the lighters left by all the candles - even a small flashlight on our keyring for walking home from town at night. We had a CD player with a choice of music, and a DVD player to watch movies from the hotel's collection. Nothing was

The deck was incredible - our own jacuzzi (although with temps in the 90s I would have liked a cool water pool!), a double lounge with terry cover, a table with umbrella and four chairs, and two steamer lounge chairs - all overlooking the caldera. Gorgeous!

As you can tell from our photos, breakfast was amazing! Included with the room, we were given a menu on our first night and picked breakfast, which then arrived at the time we picked (10:30 - a nice option compared to the early times at most hotels). A staff member would put a tablecloth on our table and set up our breakfast, and then knock on our door with a "good morning" and disappear. Magic! One night we also got appetizers from the hotel for sunset, and they were excellent.

Second to none, and we had just come from the Villa D'Este, so you'll have some comparison. Eleni was amazing - when I inquired about a ferry we needed to take she offered to, and then did, get us the tickets. When we asked about the name of a restaurant she made us a reservation - and when we arrived, we had the best table in the place. Our ferry was at a ridiculous hour, and she organized someone to get up at 4 a.m., give us a personal wake up call, and then take our luggage up to the road where a Mercedes taxi was waiting for us.

Every night at sunset, a staff member arrives to put out a lantern for you, and to take down your umbrella and cover your terry chairs so they don't get wet at night. The housekeeping was excellent, and overall the place was spotless and perfectly kept. Staff worked so hard - but seemed happy there and proud of the hotel.

Overall, I can't recommend Ikies highly enough. I hope they won't raise their room rates too much so we can afford to return - this was a perfect experience and out of the eight places we stayed on our 3 week honeymoon, this was our favorite.

  • Liked — Room, Service, people who worked there
  • Disliked — hot tub was too hot for greek summer, umbrella didn't move for sun...minor!
  • Tips/Secrets — splurge on the really nice rooms - they are worth it

Stayed at Ikies for 5 nights at the end of May to early June. We booked the room "The House of the Winemaker" based on the reviews on this website.

This was in some ways a difficult review in that how do you describe the most gorgeous location and Hotel in a short review. As has been described here earlier by numerous reviewers the arrangement to be picked up at the airport, greeted on arrival by the staff and shown immediately to your suite was very pleasant. Check-in was done quickly in your suite-no waiting in a lobby etc- a few explanations about the room, set up your breakfast time/choices and you're done!

The room itself was amazing, (a word we used a lot)-steam spa, large shower, jacuzzi tub, King sized bed in the "cave portion" of the suite, and when breakfast arrived the next morning-well-what else can you say but with the view, the excellant quality and quantity, we were well aware we had arrived at a special place.

The short 15 minute walk to Oia was easy and the staff recommendations for dinner were bang on. Particularily in Amoudi where we ate two dinners at Dimitris Taverna. You won't eat better seafood anywhere.

Also took their recommendation to do the sunset catamaran cruise on Blue Lagoon charters. Now that was worth every penny!

Of course the staff of Ikies makes your stay special as well. They are unobtrusive but when you need anything (seldom) it arrives so fast you almost think they were prepared for your request!

I would certainly recommend this hotel for any couple who wants to feel pampered and special without the often "artificial gimmicks" that many boutique hotels use to impress their guests. This is the kind of place where we kept saying-"pinch me so I know this is not a dream".

Finally, to find that the Ikies website is a pretty accurate relection of what you will experience reflects well on the Hotel as well.
