“Mixed experience at Alexander's Boutique Hotel”
Reviewed 30 May 2012

We recently stayed for 3 nights at Alexander's Boutique Hotel in one of the 'cozy caves' and we had a mixed experience there.
Pros:
- location is great
- the room is nice
- the staff was friendly during the stay
Cons:
- there is absolutely no sign posted on the street, so we literally had to drive up and down the road of over 30 minutes and it was difficult to find the place. When we asked the staff about this we were told that they are not allowed to post signs, this explanation seems odd, as we saw many signs posted, including one for Mystique, a hotel near by Alexander's
- the breakfast selection is more than limited for a 4 stars hotel, even though the view from the terrace is spectacular, the food itself was the worst we had when compared with the hotels we stayed in Athens, Paros in Mykonos during our 2 weeks vacation
- the outside jacuzzi area is very small and we were not able to use it, as there were always other customers using it
- the hotel has no pool close by, you can use one at another hotel, which is at a 10 minutes walk, in a completely different location

Besides all this I also have to note that, unfortunately, I am not sure I can recommend the hotel to other friends or just others in general due to an incident that happened after we left. Unfortunately, we forgot one of our cell phones in the room and we realized this only after we returned home. Ever since we realized that the phone was forgotten in the room we tried to contact the hotel to see if they found it and can return it and they have been totally non responsive, no replies to emails, nothing. I understand that is our fault that we forgot the cell phone, but I think a reply to an email is not that much to ask for.

Anyone who has been to Oia will tell you that it's absolute paradise and Alexander's is the perfect spot to enjoy it! Tucked away on the hillside overlooking the caldera, the spot is exquisite. There's no better way to spend an afternoon than to sit on the bougainvillea covered patio. The rooms are funky, cozy and clean...very comfortable and well appointed. We went with friends and had a 2 bedroom suite. Breakfasts were simple but delicious...ordered ahead and served on the exquisite patio mentioned above! A great and relaxing way to start a day of doing nothing! The path which winds its way through the heart of Oia is less than a 5 minute walk which is actually perfect...it can get pretty crazy during the day and early evening. Not sure how the cruise ship passengers get here but they do! All the restaurants we went to were great...definitely eat the calamari or the octopus! One night we had the pleasure of going out with Alexander to Santorini Mou which is just up the street away from the town. Very Greek and probably touristy but we had a ball!!!! We partook in the Greek dancing and even threw a plate or two! The food was very good and the music and staff delightful! Another highlight was walking down the 200 and something stairs to the seafood restaurants...any restaurant will probably do...we went to the one at the far end...picked out our fish and it was delicious (albeit expensive!). We also had a terrific lunch at Pelecanos...a rooftop restaurant on the main path in Oia overlooking the caldera...corner table with awesome views made for a wonderful afternoon! Only drawbacks to Alexander's (which were NOT issues for us and may not be for others)... sunbathing space is very limited (2 or 3 lounges right by the hot tub). You have go to the pool at Laokasti Villas...only a 2 minute walk...it was lovely although it is not on the caldera side so the views aren't as spectacular as those at Alexander's. Also, the steps/walkway from the street down to the rooms is a bit steep. If you have balance trouble, you just need to be careful. Neither are reasons not to go.
Oia is ideal for honeymooners...we were not and 4 full days was plenty...not a ton to do!
Overall, we were glad we went there and were not disappointed with Alexander's...we would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Oia.

A's Hotel was a really pleasant surprise. They arranged our transport from the port and Han (hotel mover and shaker) met us with a handshake and a smile. We checked in with enthusiastic Yvetta, who gave us a low down on things to do and places to go.Our room was perfect for the friends away days, lots of attention to detail, down to DVDs to watch if the weather turns grey,as it sometimes does this early in the season.A's is great value compared with the other caldera view hotels and is at the top of "the steps".Bliss!
Beware food and drinks v expensive(compared with other parts of Greece) as they have to import most of it,the water is also shipped in,so being careful with it ,is advised.
There was no sunset from the hotel this time of the year, but maybe in the high summer? The sunset is a small walk away and why not on a gorgeous evening?
Oia is charmingly commercial, with its white windy streets, and absolute heaven when the cruise ship passengers go back on board,we have the place to ourselves. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Get "Topaz" room if you're going with friends. Lovely traditional sweet/pastry shop i...

We stayed at Alexander's Boutique hotel from May 7-May 10 and our stay was great! Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by Han who is our favorite staff member at Alexander's (always helpful and cheerful!). Our room was not yet ready so we chatted with some of the other guests who were also checking in at the same time as us (lots of international travelers from China, Singapore, Moscow, etc).

Tip: if you are arriving by public bus, tell the bus driver you are staying at Alexander's. The hotel is actually located at the tip of Oia so the bus driver can stop pretty close to the hotel (otherwise the bus terminal is in the city and would be at least a 10-15 minute walk to the hotel).

We booked the Pearl Room "cozy cave" on booking.com and found the room to be charming. Our first cave room experience! pretty neat space for sure although they have to keep this air ventillator device on the whole time (probably to prevent mold) so it's not completely quiet in the room.

Location of Alexander's is good, it is about a 20 minute walk from the sunset area and about a 10 minute walk into the main part of Oia for those who are less mobile but it's flat and is a pedestrian walkway. The view from Alexander's is very nice, we really enjoyed eating our breakfast on the veranda overlooking the gorgeous sea view every day. Breakfast was simple but sufficient. Again you are distracted by the gorgeous views and the friendly cats who literally hang out with you as you dine.

There is a jacuzzi on the property but it can only fit 4 people maximum for all the guests to share so you might have to wait to use it. We were able to use it for at least 2 of the 3 days that we were there so we were quite pleased.

Yvetta runs the place now although we got to meet Alexander while we were waiting for our tour guide to pick us up for the sunset boat excursion. The staff at Alexander's are all very nice and again shout out to Han and made our stay quite enjoyable.

I think for the price, hospitability, rooms, views, Alexander's was pretty close to perfect. This was our 2nd favorite hotel out of 5 in all of Greece during our stay (the first was Casa Moazzo in Rethmyno).

Don't forget to read and sign the guestbook in your room. Cute touch. After staying here, we can now recommend Alexander's and staying in Oia!

This hotel is really greati! View, interior, food, location, PRICE and so on... Everything that the travelers may expect to the hotel is nice. I feel sorry that I don't speak English very well enough to decribe the amazingly good points of the hotel. But I guess that I could not do it perfectly even if I were an English speaking person. I just thank the hotel for giving me such a happy memories in Santorini.

We stayed 1 night in Imperial suite and 1 night in Alexandrite cave villa during May 13 and 14 - both were upgraded which was perfect for our honeymoon. View is fantastic, although there were insects/spiders in the room. Breakfast could have provided more choices but it was fine still. Good experience staying in the cave villa :) Hotel is in a good distance from the main little town with shops and restaurants. Bus stop is right outside hotel entrance.

Our time at Alexander's boutique hotel could not have been more magical. Tucked inside the cliffside of the town of Oia was our charming room, individually decorated, giving it a very warm feel. Every detail was thought through with great style. Above all what made our time so special was the amazing staff. They immediately embraced us as friends and we spent many wonderful hours enjoying the views, playing music, sipping wine, sharing experiences and making great connections. We are already discussing the quickest way we can return!
