We stayed here for the first couple nights of our stay in Santorini, before migrating more toward the center of things on the island. Be aware if you stay anywhere in Oia, you are gaining access to the island's greatest beauty (the promenade of Oia, and of course the majestic sunsets) but you are a bit isolated from most of the activity on Santorini. Anyway, should you choose to stay in Oia for some or all of your time in Santorini, then I strongly do recommend Alexander's. The location is great in that you are close enough to the pedestrian promenade of Oia to walk to it, but since you aren't right on it, you avoid the tourist crowds. The cave rooms are a unique experience unlike lodging elsewhere in the world, and the daily breakfast on the balcony is an experience not to be missed (though, as others have noted, it would be better if Alexander's offered some greater selection on the breakfast as it's quite plain). The people at the hotel were very nice, as they moved our bags promptly and made arrangements for us to take the wooden boat to the volcano (something highly recommended for a Santorini vacation). We did find the hotel staff's restaurant recommendations to be a bit off the mark though.

Annoyingly, the pool was not open when we visited. The jacuzzi however was quite wonderful and offered caldera views -- the ultimate relaxing, luxurious experience!

Others have posted tips on getting to this hotel. Rather than bus or taxi, I recommend a company with the website SantoriniTransfer.com who operate a shared ride service. From the port to Alexander's, in May 2012, it was 11 euros per person. While certainly more than the bus, we found it to be a reasonable cost for 2 people to get to the hotel in a fairly timely manner (even though we were the last ones off the shuttle since we were going to the farthest point on the island), and the shuttle driver certainly knew where the hotel was.

Okay, first of all, let me teach you how to get to the hotel in cheapest way, (but it takes time)

From airport or port, first get on the bus (1.6 euro) to Fira, get off at Fira, then change to another bus to Oia. Check the timetable (but they are never on time),
When you finally get on the bus to Oia, please tell the driver, and remind him every 5 min to tell him to stop at Taverna Anemomilos;

When you get down, cross the street and in the yellow telephone booth if you look down, you will see their entrance.

But if you come here for honeymoon, or doesnt like waiting for the bus seems never to come, please forget about the above, just get a taxi.

Then, about our cave room, it is so cute!! and breakfast time is my favorite moment, no matter what kind of food I got, just look at the beautiful beautiful Aegean sea in front of you, everything looks so delicious!!

Service is exelent, I mentioned to them I saw the hotel description online tho Im not sure if there should be a complimentary bottle of wine or not?
at the beginning, the receptionist told us the room we booked, the wine is not included.

But several minutes later, one of their staff, Han, knocked on our door, and holding a bottle of wine, and told us, he talked to Alexander, yes the owner of "Alexander's Boutique", he decided to give us a free bottle;!!!! how nice of him, and how lucky we are !!!!!

Also, dont worry about the steps and dragging the luggage, by the time you get there, everything is taken care!!!!!
They always quickly responded to everything we need, staying at this beautiful hotel, with the wonderful service, is the best experience we have!

Stay in Oia if you can, Fira is more fun, but Oia, is much much more beautiful !!!!

p.s. because it is a "cave room", it gets a lil dark inside ...

We recently stayed for 3 nights at Alexander's Boutique Hotel in one of the 'cozy caves' and we had a mixed experience there.
Pros:
- location is great
- the room is nice
- the staff was friendly during the stay
Cons:
- there is absolutely no sign posted on the street, so we literally had to drive up and down the road of over 30 minutes and it was difficult to find the place. When we asked the staff about this we were told that they are not allowed to post signs, this explanation seems odd, as we saw many signs posted, including one for Mystique, a hotel near by Alexander's
- the breakfast selection is more than limited for a 4 stars hotel, even though the view from the terrace is spectacular, the food itself was the worst we had when compared with the hotels we stayed in Athens, Paros in Mykonos during our 2 weeks vacation
- the outside jacuzzi area is very small and we were not able to use it, as there were always other customers using it
- the hotel has no pool close by, you can use one at another hotel, which is at a 10 minutes walk, in a completely different location

Besides all this I also have to note that, unfortunately, I am not sure I can recommend the hotel to other friends or just others in general due to an incident that happened after we left. Unfortunately, we forgot one of our cell phones in the room and we realized this only after we returned home. Ever since we realized that the phone was forgotten in the room we tried to contact the hotel to see if they found it and can return it and they have been totally non responsive, no replies to emails, nothing. I understand that is our fault that we forgot the cell phone, but I think a reply to an email is not that much to ask for.

Anyone who has been to Oia will tell you that it's absolute paradise and Alexander's is the perfect spot to enjoy it! Tucked away on the hillside overlooking the caldera, the spot is exquisite. There's no better way to spend an afternoon than to sit on the bougainvillea covered patio. The rooms are funky, cozy and clean...very comfortable and well appointed. We went with friends and had a 2 bedroom suite. Breakfasts were simple but delicious...ordered ahead and served on the exquisite patio mentioned above! A great and relaxing way to start a day of doing nothing! The path which winds its way through the heart of Oia is less than a 5 minute walk which is actually perfect...it can get pretty crazy during the day and early evening. Not sure how the cruise ship passengers get here but they do! All the restaurants we went to were great...definitely eat the calamari or the octopus! One night we had the pleasure of going out with Alexander to Santorini Mou which is just up the street away from the town. Very Greek and probably touristy but we had a ball!!!! We partook in the Greek dancing and even threw a plate or two! The food was very good and the music and staff delightful! Another highlight was walking down the 200 and something stairs to the seafood restaurants...any restaurant will probably do...we went to the one at the far end...picked out our fish and it was delicious (albeit expensive!). We also had a terrific lunch at Pelecanos...a rooftop restaurant on the main path in Oia overlooking the caldera...corner table with awesome views made for a wonderful afternoon! Only drawbacks to Alexander's (which were NOT issues for us and may not be for others)... sunbathing space is very limited (2 or 3 lounges right by the hot tub). You have go to the pool at Laokasti Villas...only a 2 minute walk...it was lovely although it is not on the caldera side so the views aren't as spectacular as those at Alexander's. Also, the steps/walkway from the street down to the rooms is a bit steep. If you have balance trouble, you just need to be careful. Neither are reasons not to go.
Oia is ideal for honeymooners...we were not and 4 full days was plenty...not a ton to do!
Overall, we were glad we went there and were not disappointed with Alexander's...we would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Oia.

A's Hotel was a really pleasant surprise. They arranged our transport from the port and Han (hotel mover and shaker) met us with a handshake and a smile. We checked in with enthusiastic Yvetta, who gave us a low down on things to do and places to go.Our room was perfect for the friends away days, lots of attention to detail, down to DVDs to watch if the weather turns grey,as it sometimes does this early in the season.A's is great value compared with the other caldera view hotels and is at the top of "the steps".Bliss!
Beware food and drinks v expensive(compared with other parts of Greece) as they have to import most of it,the water is also shipped in,so being careful with it ,is advised.
There was no sunset from the hotel this time of the year, but maybe in the high summer? The sunset is a small walk away and why not on a gorgeous evening?
Oia is charmingly commercial, with its white windy streets, and absolute heaven when the cruise ship passengers go back on board,we have the place to ourselves. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Get "Topaz" room if you're going with friends. Lovely traditional sweet/pastry shop in the high street, you can see into the kitchen downstairs from the street.(sorry forgotten the name derrrr..)
