“At the end of the day, literally, it's only a sunset.”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

It was beautiful, a deep orange ball of fire descending into the ocean. A perfect sunset. I didn't expect to be alone to see it but the crowds were unbelievable and according to our waiter they are often worse than last night. People were sitting on their spots waiting for the sunset from 2 hours before it was going to happen. The tiny lanes were clogged with people and camera lenses making it slow progress to escape. It's not overrated as a sight to see but with that many people also watching it, it becomes a zoo scene. If you're in Kamari, set the alarm for 6.00am and watch the sun rise. Just as spectacular and if you are unlucky you might have to share the beach with a handful of other early birds!

“Most beautiful Sunset!”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

The sun sets in the middle of the sea, probably behind an island, but that, we can't see, so it looks like it sets without "touching" the water! Amazing!

“Stay in Fira”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

Honestly, the sunset in Fira is just as good if not better and there are more restaurants/spot to watch. That's not to say the sunset in Oia isn't beautiful -- it is -- but crowds pack the castle and there aren't that many restaurants that face the sunset (and they book up quickly).

“Too Crowded!!!”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

OK the sunset in Oia is incredibly beautiful. But is it worth squeezing your way into the overcrowded backstreets with the best views just to watch the sun go down and then find yourself wedged in like a sardine with the hundreds of other tourists? Not for me. Far better is to walk away from Oia and up the hill along the coast to the small chapel up there. Great view (much better than in Oia itself) and much more relaxing and romantic as there is unlikely to be anyone else there.

“Great sunset for those who patiently wait”
Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

We had read all the reviews about the crazy crowds so we arrived at Oia and found a spot at 5 pm to wait for the sunset at 8 pm. Sure enough people started streaming in around 6 pm. It was well worth the wait. Where we were you could see the sun as a whole quickly sink behind the ocean. We loved it! However, it was chaos trying to leave the city with all the people. It's crazy how buses and ships only come in to drop people off for the sunset.
